Please join us on Sunday, November 22nd at 1:00pm. The NWNJ
Ecovillage group will be showing the first part of the Geoph
Kozenzy documentary, Visions of Utopia. Geoph was an active
member of both the Fellowship for Intentional Communities and the
Federation of Egalitarian Communities. The film follows 18
varying intentional communities throughout the world.
Intentional communities, as the name suggests, are communities of
people who have come together to live with a common vision.
Today many of us are looking for ways to bring more community
into our lives. This documentary showcases some extraordinary
visions of 'ordinary' people and tells their stories of living
and working together to build a better world. The documentary
follows examples of cohousing communities, spiritual communities,
communes, housing cooperatives, activist communities, and
ecovillages.
Visions of Utopia is 3 1/2 hours long - we will show the first
half this month. This is a great opportunity to get to know
others looking for community and to familiarize yourself with
various types in intentional communities. Following the movie,
we will talk about the NW NJ Ecovillage group, which plans to
grow within Sussex County, NJ. We will discuss the vision for
the ecovillage, our history, what being a co-organizer of the
project entails, and our plans for the near future. Please RSVP
to abe@... for location and directions.
Please bring some food to share - utensils, cups and plates will
be provided.
Peace,
Abe Karl-Gruswitz

Hello,
If you know of anyone who might be interested in a workshop on
"How to Start Ecologically Sustainable Worker Cooperatives",
could you please forward my contact information to them? I can
be emailed at abe@..., and phoned at
973-786-5396. The course will be 8 weeks long, meeting once a
week in NYC, with homework in between. The cost for the entire
course is $200. Once the sign-up sheet has exceeded 10 people,
then, as a group, we'll try setting dates that all, or as many
people as possible, can attend, when the presenters are
available. The program will be presented by Green Worker
Cooperatives in the Bronx, as part of the Co-op Academy. There
may be a carpool opportunity.
Peace,
Abe Karl-Gruswitz

Cohousing in Maplewood, NJ
A cohousing community may be forming soon in Maplewood, NJ. Maplewood, in the
New York metro area of northern New Jersey (Essex County), is a racially and
culturally diverse town that is well known for its strong sense of community and
social activism.
Cohousing is a form of intentional neighborhood in which residents actively
participate in the design and operation of their own community. In cohousing,
residents know their neighbors well and enjoy a strong sense of community that
is typically absent in contemporary cities and suburbs.
Cohousing communities consist of private, fully equipped dwellings and extensive
common amenities, typically including a kitchen and dining room for shared meals
several times a week, guest rooms, a workshop/craft room, indoor and outdoor
kids' spaces, and other recreation areas. Cohousing is a custom-built,
resident-managed, close-knit neighborhood that offers a healthy balance of
privacy and community.
Cohousing communities are typically built to very high green standards. In fact,
the first residential building in the U.S. to achieve LEED Silver certification
was a cohousing community (Eastern Village Cohousing in Silver Spring, MD).
Please visit http://www.maplewoodcohousing.org for more information, or

Spammers still come in through requests, except for the obvious email
addresses. It's best to ask for some sort of statement as a requirement for
acceptance into the email group. You have to ban them immediately when they
inevitably slip through.

Alright, it looks like I can't add anyone as moderator, as only a moderator (and
not owner). I sent a message to Yahoo asking for help.
I did erase the spammers and recent spam messages. I can't change the settings
to make people have to ask for membership to avoid spammers.
Peace,
Abe

Hi folks,
I am one of the owners of this list, but i have closed the email account
that i started it with, forgot my password etc so can't figure out how to
help with the spam. and anyway I am too busy on other projects to do a good
job of moderating this list in any case If folks want to keep this list
alive, and if anyone knows their way around yahoo and can take that on, pls
let me know and i will help however i can. or people could shut this down
and start a new list
i am going to take myself off the list because of the spam, so then there
won't be an owner!
right now i am busy with HVCALT.org and RegenerationCSA.org both of which
we are working to grow into wider community-based efforts. we are focussing
on agricultural land protection, but that will also include a housing
component. if anyone has an interest, pls come by.
best,
kevin

-Yes--we are interested and hopeful! My husband Yonah and our toddler and I live
in upper Manhattan. We're certified in permaculture design and we're very eager
to put our knowledge to use and to live in a community nearby. Has anyone read
Ecovillage Ithaca by Sue Walker? It offers so many insights about what it takes
to form and sustain such a community and I found it to be very helpful in giving
a realistic picture of how much energy and work is involved, and in what
wonderful rewards there are.
