Most shrub roses are hardy as well, but don't spend the money if you are dead set on a certian rose with out looking into it's background to make sure. Look up the breeder and it's parents or hardiness rating to make sure!,some Hybrid Teas and Floribunds (the older the better).Older cultivars are more hardy,as they where bred for a wider public and had less Tea rose bred into them.
Dr.Brownell(sub-zero roses)bred some nice hardy Hybrid Teas and Climers as well.
More and more hary roses are being introduced to the public every year, mostly by forien breeders. The USA breeders seem to be stuck in the 60's as to what the public wants in there roses.
Most of your Hardy roses will be in more compatiable colors as opposed to Hybrid Teas and Floribundas.
A lot of breeders think that the brighter the color, the more it will sell.So far this has been mostly the incorrect thinking.
A pebble to remember, yellows, oranges, and reds will be less hardy than the pinks and rose colors.Because the repeat gene, red and yellow are tender and came from the East.
The European roses where all once blooming, hail hardy and fragrant as all get-out.A trate that most people don't like.
This is where you pay through the nose for those few summer blossoms.Your roses are now a good 3 zones more tender and bloom alot less.I had an Alba Semi-plena with over 1,000 blooms one year. Yes all those zeros are correct, eight feet tall and as wide, gorgeous!
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMENBER,IS WHEN PLANTING TO PUT THE BUD UNION,the ball where all the canes meet,3-4"BELOW THE SOIL!
Soon you will have canes growing roots!!
Give hardy roses a try!
