Hi, all!
I've been really swamped over here and having a devil of a
time catching up. This is the busiest time of the year for my kind of work -
double hours and still can't get everything done! (sigh) Several folks from
the goat lists have asked me for this info - so I thought I'd lump it in one
post. Sorry it took a bit of time for me to collect it!
If anyone would like to share other "really neat" goat sites,
please feel free to email me privately or share on the list. I collect &
save such sights!
I know folks are still waiting on the "Zoo How-To" -- I
haven't forgotten, just swamped at the moment!
Hope this helps ya'all who were asking......

Quality Llama Products & Alternative Livestock Supply
**don't let the name fool ya'! They have goat, mini horse/donkey, reindeer
- driving equipment & how-to books/videos plus packing equipment & how-to
books/videos - all kinds of amazing and useful stuff, "toy" items too (cups,
shirts, stamps, etc)! I've ordered their goat driving harnesses and they
work great for our goats, mini horse and alpaca (mini llama)! I like the
goat harness over a mini horse harness because the goat's has more padding
(they are the same design). I get my carts from a local mini horse cart
supplier though -- these guys have great packing supplies at average price
and driving harnesses at the best price but no goat carts. I like the
2-wheel sulky type carts over the 4-wheel wagon types for our animals - I
think they handle better for us & the animals.

  Caprine Goat Supplies
**also has driving & packing equipment & how-to. About same prices as
Quality Llama's stuff. They have a 2-wheel cart instead of the 4-wheel

Cheryl,

Doris Gantons book, Breaking and Training the Driving horse has a real good
step by step section. Much of it is applicable to goat driving, except
goats don't have as much of the flight instinct as a horse does. Sheri
Kast is near you also, and might be of help. Also the American Harness
Goat Association has a training Manuel available. You'd need to write to
Carol Contreas since she's not on line.

Interesting Question. How do you get your goats to go in front of you? If
you answer that you will have the key, as any behavior modification is a
matter of finding the one thing that motivates the animal to perform.
Some goats seem to naturally want to be in front, others want to be behind.
That is a matter of personality type.
I've had goats shut down in performance, right in front of an OPB camera as
a matter of fact. And he wasn't a bottle raised imprinted goat, but one who
had been trained to do obstacles and just decided that day he wasn't.
Willing goats very often don't get the "consequences" part of the training
often enough, and when they decide to quit it's a surprise. I'd rather have
an animal who has worked through what happens if you don't work. We have
since discussed his behavior and he works again.

I have a question. How does everyone motivate their goats to go forward
willingly? Sometimes mine will, sometimes mine won't. Unfortunately,
Buster decided he wasn't going to move during the demonstration on Monday.
How embarrassing. I never did figure out what the problem was. Carol
never seems to have problems with Brauny going forward, and she thinks it's
because Buster was bottle raised. Does anyone else have this problem?

Here's the "recipe" for fly and tick spray:

1 cup Avon Skin-So-Soft
2 cups white vinegar
1 tablespoon eucalyptus or citronella oil
1 to 3 cups of water (1 cup repels ticks. 3 cups repels flies).
Shake well before using.

"...we will be more than happy to answer any questions anyone has about
cartgoats..."

Hi, Cindy -

Saw your forwarded post on the HarnessGoat list - wow! 15 years!

I have two La Mancha goat wethers (3 mth olds, "Zero" & "Gizmo"), one Nubian
wether (10 mth old, "BoJo"). All three are "destined" to be cart pullers - I
don't know how to actually drive, so we're just aiming for halter lead cart
pulling. I work with kids, almost every weekend of the year - almost all of
our animals go with us. We also have a mini Llama (3 yr old, "Bandit"), a
mini Horse (10 yr old, "Jack") who are current cart pullers -- they were easy
for this amateur to train! Also a 1 wk old mini Ox, future cart puller,
"DaisyMae".

The Pygmy goats, duck, rabbits, bantie chickens, pigeons & sheep just come
along for the ride and "hang out" with the kids!

Here's the question: I've seen the goat harnesses from Hoeggers', Carpine
Supply, Quality Llama Products ---- they all seem the same make but range
from $95 to $175 for what appears to be the same harness.

What do you reccommend for La Mancha's and a Nubian to use? I have a little
aluminum goat cart (not a mini horse cart, but one actually made and fits the
little La Manche's future size) -- so am ok there.

When is it ok for the La Mancha's to start pulling a goat cart with one child
riding in it, on level ground like a grassy backyard - child being up to 65
lbs? I know the mini Ox can pull on same when 15 mths old (not sooner).
When is it ok for a Nubian to pull the same weights? We don't do hilly
pulling, so that won't even be in the picture. I am very very cautious with
my animals' safety, so I don't want to start too soon. Have had advice for
when and what body weight % the big goats can do packing, but haven't been
able to hear yet when they can start pulling.

In general, I've heard that they can pull a cart long before they can carry
weight on their back --- but that's a bit vague. Would like a better idea of
how early --- really really don't want to stress my boys!

has assured me "It'll be a piece of cake."

I got the boys out to practice tonight, and they did OK, considering they
haven't been driven in 6 weeks. I tried the new harness goat I picked up
at the sale too. He pulls just fine, but the steering definitely needs
some work. At least he has "HO" down pat.

I'm sure to have some funny stories. I'll post about it tomorrow.

Hi guys,

Thought I'd update on the team wagon I'm working on. Had a draft horse
friend come to look at it yesterday. He said that basically I just have to
tighten up all the loose ends.

There should be about two inches slack between the tugs when they're taught
and when the breeching straps are taught. It's important to have the neck
yolk clips even with the middle of the single trees in back so that the
goats are going in a straight line. Once I have the harness adjusted
properly, we'll work on adjusting the reins.

I still have a problem with the chest plate wanting to droop when the neck
yolk is attached, even with the strap that connects it back to the back
pad. Has anyone over come this problem?

I think Shari might have done this as a senior 4H project. It's a home
tape so the quality isn't tops, but it gives the basic ideas. Can't find
an E-mail for her, but her address per the last ADGA directory is:

Shari Kast

> the cart) but we aspire to learn how to REALLY drive with our menagerie!

If you've taught the animals to accept the cart and pull you're over
halfway there. Now put a driver in the cart. Have them give the command
to "walk" and lead on. Every time you stop have the driver say HO. The
driver can be very light on the reins. Just a finger wiggle can be felt.
Try it with your partner before you try on the animal. When the animal
gives the proper response, use positive reinforcement with something they
like.

After they seem to be getting the idea, the leader person starts to drop
back. This is the hard part since goats usually want to follow rather than
lead. Keep encouraging as you drop back. Eventually, you can just drop
the line.

"...My boys give rides at our county fair. The children and the adults love

Our La Manche & Nubians are babies now, but future carters (maybe some
packing picnic lunches, too). Our Hampshire lamb and mini ox are also future
carters (the mini ox will also do saddle rides, when older). Our mini horses
and alpacas (mini llamas) are mature and ready for training now -- the mini
horses do both saddle rides & cart while the mini llama/alpacas do cart.

Our carting experience is really just cart pulling (halter led while pulling
the cart) but we aspire to learn how to REALLY drive with our menagerie! I
do pony rides for a living -- we do a lot of free events for children's fund
raisers and for animal shelters. The kids really do love to see goats in
harness (as well as the other unusual critters). Alpacas are just like
llamas - only smaller and easier to handle.

Hope you have luck about that video still being available -- let us all
know!!!

Susan,

Goats are much less threatening to drive. There a little more of a
challenge though, because they're smarter and they don't have a much of a
flight instinct. I have a team of half Clydes, but I'm not sure I'll ever
get them trained to work together. It seems to be a two person job, and no
one else at my house is interested in the horses. My son loves the goats
though.

Hi all!

I'm Sher in Colorado. I have a Nubian wether about 8 mths old, and two La
Mancha wethers about 2 mths old. I was hoping for the Nubian (BoJo) to
single pull a cart and the La Mancha boys (Zero & Gizmo) to team pull a cart
--- all when they're old enough. I don't know how to actually drive, so it's
just cart pulling (halter lead while hooked up to a cart). I'd be very
interested if anyone's heard of a video tape for sale to teach a beginner
like myself the "how-to" for goats!

I have a small pony ride & petting zoo business. I have one pony who does
saddle rides. Thought it would be fun to have some more "ride" animals. So
I got the goats for cart pulling (hopefully someday to actually cart drive!),
two mini llamas or alpacas of you know of them also for cart pulling. I've
heard a sheep can also do cart work --- there was an article written out here
recently about a fellow who cart drives a team of two sheep. Wow!

But my favorite of all our animals are our goats -- from nubian to la manchas
to the pygmies. Can't wait to learn how to drive with them!

I am Susan Lazenby. Our family has lots and lots of all kinds of animals.
Goats seem to be our favorite and LaMancha is the goat breed we like
because the milk is so good. (We do have a pygmy and 3 Alpines) We also
raise Curly Horses and they, I guess, qualify as ponies because of their
size. We have Santa Cruz Island sheep and two calves. Bunnies, chickens,
cats, etc. I am really interested in getting the two mares to pull a cart.
They have done this in the past and were in a couple parades. I think
that by starting with the goats I can work myself into working the horses.

I live in Santa Paula, California and live just on the outskirts of town on
a farm where I was raised. I've been cowgirl my whole life and was when it
was not cool to be one. I even have a big roping arena in my backyard. I
have lots of space to do the harness-goat thing..just need help getting
started.

I'm so grateful for this list getting started. I even have some goat-cart
plans with extra information that I will share with the list when I can
figure out how to do an attachment. (I can open one, just haven't had to
use that file.) Regards to all my new friends. Susan

There are now twelve of us on the list. Now would probably be a good time
to introduce ourselves. I'll start.

I've been breeding goats for ten years now. I have a herd of Nubians and
Lamanchas. My first driving goat is named Buster. He was kept as a pack
goat and harness goat and raised for that purpose. Buster is 6 years old
now, and unflappable. I take him to clinics and use him to teach other
people to drive.

I started a new harness goat named Cirrus last year. I had used him as a
buck, but his genetics didn't work out and he is so sweet I couldn't just
butcher him. He loves to drive and is a lot more energetic than Buster is.

I kept the first LaMancha wether to train as a driving goat this year. His
name is Pill (because sometimes he's hard to take). He is learning to lead
have manners and to go away from the herd by himself.

Yesterday at the livestock auction I picked up a young wether that has
started driving. He's a two year old Saanan and is in isolation for about
3 weeks. I can't wait till I can try him. He leads perfectly and is a
real sweet gentleman.

I started out driving horses, but the goats are actually more fun. I
finally got a wagon so we can hook Buster and Cirrus up together as a team.
I'm hoping that Buster will be able to help me train Pill like older draft
horses help teach young ones. I'll keep you posted as to how it's going.

Please everyone, join in. No animal's are the same and we all have
something to share about their behavior and how to alter it.

I bet you could modify a wagon for him rather easily.

I hope that turns out to be true. My one older nubian, Buster, is a slow
steady sweetheart. He will drive for any number of beginners, and stop to
think if he doesn't understand; but don't ask him to go quickly. Its not
possible for him. My other Nubian, Cirrus, is young and impulsive and very
energetic. I have trouble driving them as a team, since Buster likes to
let Cirrus do all the work.

Yep - sure am!

That would sure be handy - much easier than swapping out different sized
wheels on the same cart. I've not seen this model, though.

Yes - the Nubians seem to be a bit bigger than the La Mancha's. I wouldn't
try to match them as a team (one Nubi & one LaMan). I've also noticed that
the Nubian seems to be (how to say this) an airhead! (grin) The La Manche
seem to be significantly more calm and more "work" minded, more willing for
the task.

Are you using the different wheel heights to adjust the height of the
shafts?

I saw one cart that allows you to adjust the shafts up and down, but
unfortunately I don't have it.

I'm about to try training my first LaMancha to cart. I have two other
Nubian cart goats. Have you noticed much difference? My LaManchas seem to
be smaller.

In addition to the Nursery wagon I mentioned earlier, I have a pony cart
that we redid the shafts on.

I have two La Manche and one Nubian. Since these are bigger goats, I was
planning on using a mini horse two wheel cart with 14" wheels. What I like
about the mini horse carts is their versatility -- by changing out the wheels
from 14" to 20", I can use the same cart for the goats, or our alpaca, or our
40" tall mini horse or even (coming soon) our mini ox (will also mature to
40").

Hi everyone,

I'm so excited. I just got a flatbed nursery cart for $99. For another
$20 I got some hardware and clips. My husband helped me put a pole with a
double tree on it and we hooked up the goats. IT WORKED!

The goats pulled it very well. Now I just have to do some tweaking on the
harness and put a seat on it.

I'm going to see if a friend can weld shafts to fit it also. This may be
the answer for an inexpensive starter cart.
