There are two ICS versions: V5 and V6.
Hermes is built using ICS-V5.
Install ICS-V5 and pay attention to the ICS install notes in readme.txt.
Two major points: Rsstore the directory tree in the zip file and add vc32
subdirectory to your library path so that Delphi find ICS units when
compiling Hermes.

Henry,

The wsocket.dcu is the compiled unit of WSocket.pas which contains the TWSocket component.
I'm guessing there's some path problem on your computer or configuration issue within Delphi.
I'd search for the dcu file (which you should have if you've compiled and installed ICS), and see where it is and try to figure out where the compiler wants it.

Help,

I have put the IP address in the Server Name of the General Settings
vs. the FQDN. Seems to work, but I found some thing called the CBL
claiming the HELO is not right. They stuck me on a some blacklist as
a result (claiming we are suspicous). Then, some other lists picked
up on this. Ridiculous. I then put the IP address in with brackets,
but I found some other folks don't like it. In partciular, Hotmail
does not like the fact that we are sending mail from our network. The
public IP is clean. So what is it - in Hermes, is it better to put
the IP address by itself or with brackets?

Please help!  Thanks!

I don't understand why not my members (on my site) didn't receive my

My ISP don't blocked port 25 because I didn't received this
newsletter test for this moment, no ?

This is probably because your isp is blocking port 25. Check out

Hermes server is very, very good for me, but because it don't permit
choose the destination directory in SETUP?
In my company the directories are limited and all programs are
installed in user's default name folder.
With this is impossible to install Hermes on my workstation without
call the support team.

I have a situation in which i am trying to send the messages from
machine A to machine B. I am using the same loopbacktestSrc with
slight
modifications like sql etc.

Configurations:

machineA
Tomcat 4.1.24
JDK 1.4.2.08
DB2 database

machineB
Weblogic
JDK 1.4.2.08
DB2 database

The test is working perfecly when using a single host loopback (with
Tomcat 4.1.24 configuration), but when I try to send from machine A to
machine B, i get the STACKTRACE1
and when i try to send from machineB to machineA i get
STACKTRACE2.

I have a feeling the service mentioned as cecid:cecid might be a
problem. Should I use something like cecid1:cecid2 ? Any help is
appreciated.

Loki,
     Oddly enough this thread goes all the way back to April of 2003 See:
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hermes-Server/message/396). Eventually I
found the same problem you did (See:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hermes-Server/message/443). The problem as
best I can tell is that reading the NameServer value from they key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters,
is formatted differently on various versions of windows. On some
systems, it is comma delimited, and on others space delimited. So I good
fix would work for both (I see that your code replaces, then separates
so that should work. Thats actually what I proposed be done when it was
first found. Looking at the code you posted, it seems that it never
really got fixed. One thing that I have noticed is that the only people
that ever reported having the problem, you and I, were running on NT4 so
it seems that this is one version of windows that is affected.

     I've long since upgraded from NT4 on that machine, and I would guess
most other Hermes users have also. I suspect very few people get
affected by this. I also stopped running my own mail server since most
big American ISPs started blacklisting Dynamic IP's, but I'm still a fan
of Hermes!

Though I should post a fix for this in case no one else had

The bug is in
UtilU1.pas
lines 484-487

It is trying to fill DNSList from a comma or space separated list of
ips, but if the delimiter is a space, it never reduces the source
list, so it continually adds to DNSList

procedure FetchDNSList(DNSList : TStringList);
var
   Reg : TRegistry;
   tempStr : String;
begin
   if Assigned(DNSList) then begin
     DNSList.Clear;

     Reg := TRegistry.Create;
     Reg.RootKey := HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE;

     if
Reg.OpenKey('System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters',
False) then begin

       // Read Static Name Servers...
       tempStr := Reg.ReadString('NameServer');
       if tempStr <> '' then begin
// ************** Bug starts here

         while (Pos(',', tempStr) <> 0) or (Pos(' ', tempStr) <> 0) do
begin
           DNSList.Add(Trim( Copy(tempStr, 1, Pos(',', tempStr)-1) ));
           tempStr := Copy(tempStr, Pos(',', tempStr)+1, Length(tempStr) );
         end;
// ************** Bug ends here
         DNSList.Add( tempStr );
       end;

       // Read DHCP Name Servers...
       tempStr := Reg.ReadString('DHCPNameServer');
       if tempStr <> '' then begin
         while Pos(' ', tempStr) <> 0 do begin
           DNSList.Add(Trim( Copy(tempStr, 1, Pos(' ', tempStr)-1) ));
           tempStr := Copy(tempStr, Pos(' ', tempStr)+1, Length(tempStr) );
         end;
         DNSList.Add( tempStr );
       end;
     end;
     Reg.Free;
   end;
end;

1 solution is to replace the function with the following :-

       tempStr := Reg.ReadString('DHCPNameServer');
       if tempStr <> '' then begin
         while Pos(' ', tempStr) <> 0 do begin

with

       tempStr := StringReplace(Reg.ReadString('NameServer'), ' ', ',',
[rfReplaceAll]);
       if tempStr <> '' then begin
         while (Pos(',', tempStr) <> 0) do begin

Regards, Loki

Hello guys,
On my Windows machine the problem was Default SMTP Virtual Server on
IIS. I just stop it and the Hermes SMTP server is working fine.

The message for me besides the Can't Listen, was Can't Bind.
Good luck.

I was using Hermes for some time, but too much
trouble. Now I'm using about 1 year the Mercury mail
server, everything is just working fine, I din't
encounter a single problem.

switch to mercury it's reliable and free.

We got the same issues here (mail sent a few seconds ago at 9am, but
displays 11am).
We are trying to move from ArgoSoft Free mail server to Hermes, no
problem with ArgoSoft regarding time/date.

Anyone found a solution so far?

FWIF, it sounds like the same thing is happening for me also
Downloaded the service, never installed previously
installed it and ticked "yes" to launch program now
splash screen hung for ages
so i killed it, uninstalled it,
and tried downloading the application version thinking (maybe it's
just coz im using nt4)
APplication hung as well.. this time i left it, the mem usage went up
over 70 meg, and kept going
I left it longer and eventually I got an "Out of memory" error
However.... Hermes was completely usable after this and I was happily
able to set up a user and test things

NT4, 128 meg ram, 250 meg free on drive

hth, Loki

Summary in English:
Question was: Need a simpler guide than the PDF ... Hermes is running but do not know how to config.
Answer: a. Go to the console and review step by step the option in "Setup" and "Accounts". b. You have to understand DNS requirements for smtp to work properly, specially MX record for your domain name.
