Gunnar, las fotos de las  aves de J.Alvarez estan en
www.peruecologico.com.pe en  el capitulo sobre las areas protegidas, en la
zona reservada Allpahuayo Mishana  donde gentilmente  nos ha cedido sus
fotos nuestro querido  Embajador ecologico Mikko Phyhälä y  tambien Jose
Alvarez Alonso quien desde España nos ha enviado las fotos que a
continuacion detallo: Atrapamoscas de Zimmer, Tiranuelo de Mishana,
Hormiguerito Antiguo, Hornero del Aguaje,  Malaquin de Varillal,  aun nos
faltan colgar  en la red a  la Topaza Pira, Cotinga Pompadour, Myrmotherulla
leucophtalma y la Malacoptila rufa de las que ya tenemos las fotos.
¿ En cuanto a tu idea de abrir una galeria de especies de aves en peligro en
yahoo, no  piensas tu que podria ser buena idea ponerlas en el  sitio
peruecologico y hacer sinergia.?

Hola todos yo creo que Heinz Plenge no cobra por prestar las fotos, pero
para todo como siempre es mejor hablar con el  primero, por que siempre que
se ha tratado apoyar buenas causas el nos ha apoyado. Pero si cobra caro
cuando se trata de fines comerciales por que ese es su trabajo.

Heinz es un conservaciónista de corazon y un gran amigo. Lo hemos hablado un
poco sobre este idea ya en el encuentro en el museo de historia natural el 6
de Junio, asi que espero su apoyo...
Hay que buscar una forma para que perjudique su "negocio" pero creo que
dando imagenes con los derechos reservado a un tamaño de 50-100 kB solamente
puede ser utilizado en computadora. Osea una foto en una revista muchas
veces tiene mejor resolución y podría ser transferido a jpg igual. La otra
cosa es que fotos de aves no es tán facil de vender, ya que hay muchos
aficinados no profesionales que toman fotos de aves. Los fotografos
profesionales tienen sus canales para vender sus fotos de todos modos y así
un proyecto así puede hacer sus trabajos más conocidos. En fin es una idea
que quiero discutir con los fotografos que contribuyen.
Así que invito a todos fotografos profesionales y aficionados de compartir
sus fotos a baja resolución para este proyecto... algunos slides que me
puedan presentar para mi presentación en EE UU tambien son agradecidos.
Tambien invito a Walter Wust que participe en el proyecto....
En fin puede que las charlas en EE UU haga que se venga más gringos al país
como turistas y que haya mas inversiones por parte de las ONG:s de
conservación de EE.UU que remueven millones.

Heinz y Walther, les mando una copia abajo sobre de que trata esto y para
que puedan afiliarse a INCASPIZA - la red nacional para las aves en peligro
de extinción. Ya somos 37 personas!! Y creciendo.

Estoy preparando una serie de slides que voy a demostrar durante charlas en
Estados Unidos durante enero y febrero sobre conservación de aves en peligro
de extinción. Un idea principal es de scanear estos slides y otros que
podamos conseguir para hacer un CD-ROM con fotos de aves peruanas que será
vendido durante las charlas. La plata ganada será utilizado para financiar
expediciones para colecionar datos de las aves en peligro de extinción.
Nececito una persona interesada en aves con sabiduría de computadoras para
hacer el trabajo de scaneo, deseñar una programa de "slideshow" que indica
el nombre en ingles y cientifico de la ave. Aunque no hay pago hay algunos
beneficios, un pequeño departamento para su uso durante el mes de Diciembre,
posibilidad de aprender sobre aves y venir a las excursiones que organizamos
de fines de semana sin costo. Finalmente una invitación de acompañar a uno
de las salidas exploratorias durante la primera mitad de 2002.
Este proyecto sirve como practica para un futuro guia o una persona que
quiera aprenderse mas sobre las aves.

VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANTS (3) with field experience needed 25 Feb to  3
Jul 2002 for an ongoing study of cooperative display behavior in
lance-tailed manakins (Chiroxiphia lanceolata). Assistants' time will
be  divided among conducting two-hour behavioral observations at display
sites  (60%), nest-searching (20%), and mistnetting birds for banding
and blood  sampling (20%). The field site is a 50 ha plot of
secondary-growth dry  forest on a large island in Panama's Gulf of
Chiriquí.  Field crew will  live on site in shared bamboo cabins, work 6
days per week, and have the  opportunity for trips to town every other
week.  Be prepared for steep  terrain, heat, humidity, and occasional
snakes.  The study site is also  home to many other resident and migrant
bird species, howler monkeys,  anteaters, iguanas, boas and eccentric
locals. Experience working in  isolated field settings and/or living in
close quarters with a small field  crew is strongly preferred.
Applicants must have excellent color vision, be  in reasonably good
physical condition, and have a good sense of humor.  Ability to speak
Spanish is highly desirable but not required. Food,  housing, and
required transportation within Panama will be provided. Some  funding

GRADUATE RESEARCH opportunities available for prospective  doctoral
students with interests in behavior, ecology and  physiology of
migratory birds. Research on the stopover biology of  migratory birds is
funded by an NSF Long Term Research in  Environmental Biology [LTREB]
grant and takes place at study  sites in coastal Alabama and Louisiana.
Current graduate student  research includes sex-dependent strategies of
migration, predator- prey relations during stopover, "health" and

INTERNS (2-4) needed for projects examining long-term population
dynamics of Florida scrub-jays in native and suburban habitats, in
south-central Florida. Interns will contribute to many aspects of these
projects including searching for and monitoring nests, conducting
surveys for banded and unbanded scrub-jays, trapping and banding jays,
measuring young, counting acorns and arthropods, etc. Interns are
expected to devote a minimum of 20 hours/week to the project and to
develop an independent project on some aspect of the ecology of
scrub-jays. Internships offer an opportunity for experience in every
aspect of scientific research, from project choice and experimental
design to oral and written presentations. Applicants should have a very
strong interest in birds, natural history and field biology, the ability
to work under hot, humid field conditions, and a strong desire to engage

TWO FIELD ASSISTANT POSITIONS to study avian incubation and egg
viability in  Puerto Rico.  Two assistant positions will be available in
the laboratory of Professor Steven  R. Beissinger at the University of
California at Berkeley. The successful  applicants will assist a
postdoctoral researcher, Dr. Mark Cook, from early  Feb through late Jul
2002 conducting NSF-funded field and lab experiments  on factors
affecting the viability and hatching success of Pearly-eyed Thrasher
eggs along an altitudinal gradient in Puerto Rico in association with
the U.S.  Forest Service's International Institute of Tropical Forestry.
We focus  predominantly on the role that environmental variables and
microorganisms play  in affecting hatching success along this gradient.
Position 1. FIELD ASSISTANT:  The ideal candidate would: (1) have
extensive experience conducting field  research with birds, preferably
in tropical forest ecosystems; (2) be  interested in avian behavioral
ecology and willing to work long hours for weeks  on end; (3) be able to
conduct strenuous field work, climb pole steps to reach  nest boxes 10 m
high and keep detailed field records; (4) have excellent  driving skills
with 4-wheel drive field vehicles on back-roads and in urban  areas; (5)
have the ability to work with electronic equipment (data loggers,  video
cameras) and computers for data input; (6) have good interpersonal and
communication skills in order to interact with a variety of people
ranging from  agency personnel to the general public. Spanish as a
second language would be  advantageous, although not essential.
Position 2. LABORATORY ASSISTANT:  Candidates will need: (1) a first
degree in microbiology or related discipline  with knowledge of
bacterial identification procedures and good laboratory  skills; (2) an
interest in either microbial pathogenicity or microbial ecology;  (3)
experience in data collection and entry; (4) the capacity and commitment
to  work long hours and some weekends; (5) strong social skills and a
working  knowledge of Spanish in order to communicate with both Spanish
and English  speaking researchers; (6) excellent driving abilities.   In
addition, candidates for both positions require a flexible work attitude

EXPERIENCED VOLUNTEER BANDERS needed for 2 to 3 weeks in May 2002 for
migration study of Willow Flycatchers at two sites in northwest Costa
Rica.  Over 200 species of birds, three species of monkey, crocodile
and  many other Neotropical animals have been recorded at study areas.
Duties  will consist of setting up and monitoring mist nets,
target-netting  flycatchers, banding and morphometric data collection,
blood sampling  flycatchers for genetic analysis, and field camp

beachgoers about the birds and threats to their survival.  Applicants
must have strong interpersonal skills, be in good physical condition and
have their own vehicle.  Experience in biological data collection and
coastal bird identification helpful but not necessary. These internships
are excellent opportunities to gain field experience and receive college
or graduate credit.   Additional research and office-based internships
available year-round.  There is a $75/week stipend provided for food and

SHOREBIRD AND HORSESHOE CRAB MONITOR--The Massachusetts Audubon
Society's Coastal Waterbird Program is hiring a Horseshoe Crab and
Shorebird Research Assistant for the spring and summer of 2002.  The
work will primarily be done in Chatham, MA.  The assignment will start
in Apr and go through Sep.  This Research Assistant should have the
experience necessary to assist with the design and implementation of a
study to: map and census horseshoe crab spawning areas, observe and
videotape shorebirds feeding in spawning areas, collect invertebrate
samples from the tidal flats.  The RA will also assist other scientists
with mist-netting, banding and releasing shorebirds, as part of a study
to analyze the birds' stomach contents.  Applicants should have
experience with shorebird identification and experience with data
collection and fieldwork.  They will work under the direction of the

Uno de nuestros objetivos como colegio es brindar a nuestros alumnos una

preparando talleres de birdwatching para los diferentes niveles y en

trabajar con alguien que sepa del tema y que sea interesante para los

La ave más espactacular  de dep Amazonas es el Marvelous Spatuletail
(Loddigesia mirabilis) - un picaflor con cola irreal (mira
www.netaccessperu.net/kolibri/mst por un dibujo. Esta ave podría vender
Amazonas y el restp del Perú con un marketing correcto. Es el logo (aunque
estilisado de Kolibri Expeditions y el loge del museo de historia natural -
Univ San Marcos. Yo he sido su padrino en la campaña de BirdLife
International (y Mikko Pyhälä) para adoptar las aves amenazadas del Peru y
reciente lo estoy utilizando como simbolo para vender un nuevo producto de
viajes de aviturismo más exclusivo.....

Hay malas noticias.

Tengo reportes recientes de una pareja de Españoles (Fran Trabalón) que ha
hecho birdwatching durante tres dias en la area de Pomacochas y el puente
sobre el Rio Chido sin poder verlo. Lo mismo pasó a un ornitologo americano
Ted Buhl y su guia Enrique Castillo durante el mismo tiempo.
No creo que esto es una perdida permanente, sino que se haya displazado por
falta de comida... Lo que hace falta es un estudio más amplio de que generos
de plantas que nececita está ave y plantar y cultivar estos especies en
jardines alrededor de Pomacochas. Para su marketing hace falta unas buenas
fotos de un macho.
Creo que sería una excelente iniciativa de las autoridades de CTAR de
Amazonia, Proyecto Pra, la Camera de Turismo de Amazonas y las empresas
privadas podrían financiar un proyecto para el estudio de este maravilloso
kolibri. Además, sería altamente rentable........
Oscar mueve tus tentaclospara convencer la gente por allá  y cuentame como
va....

Sorry for delaying in answering this mail. I might
have been to fast to disregard your figures on our
last mail exchange. Would there be any system ecology
expert that could look into your hypothesis?

As for Cinclodes palliatus I am getting quite worried.
Though maybe not indicative as proofs, the changed
conditions at the bogs where it lives may have had
some impact lately. On six recent trips to four of the
five localities we know, we have only seen 2 birds at
one occasion. In June we counted 24 birds at the 5
known bogs where it occurs. (Two of these locations
were completely new).

Can the presence of a pair of Aplomado Falcons have
anything to do with this?

Here is a hypothesis. The peat extraction makes some
food resources temporarily more available....this had
a possitive effect on breeding success (many of the 24
birds were appearantly immatures). However, searching
for food in the black mud areas after the extraction
makes them more suceptable to predators. It is a quite
striking bird as such and one of the theories
presented in "Threatened Birds of the Americas" is
that it has a natural low population because of high
predation pressure. The snow-white underpart and
bright chestnut back must be very striking for the
Aplomado.

I will start some weekend excursions again to try to
find more localities for the species...Once again I
pledge to mushroom growers to help to look for a
solution. As you say the politicians and the
ecological police seem to have little interest of
providing any rules and regulations for the peat
extraction and as it is now there is a conflict of
interest.

To me a simple solution would be to declare the
Milloc/Rajuntay area a reserve - and generally not
permit peat extraction above 4400 meters in south
Junin, Lima and Huancavelica. Peat extraction could be
consessioned at lower altitudes.....where regrowth
would be faster and there could be some sustainability
in the practice.

Could we do something like this together?...I know you
have a conservationists heart

At that time you didn't see any relevence to the
problem at hand but now  two aspects leap out of the
discussions. First and of primary concern is the
common deeply embeded complacency of government to
face up to problems. The inability and reluctance of
politicians to enfront social problems. They are so
used to looking the other way when even a minor
problem looms. Secondly, since I worked up that
information based on gross estimates of the amount of
guano deposited in the ocean near the shore in
particular (within 5 miles) the pertinent observations
by a working fisherman and diver (free lung), Luciano
Barchi have shocked me into the really serious effect
the lack of guano is having on many many species of
algae, plankton, small fish and crustaceans which once
abounded and no longer are to be found in Peruvian
waters, but it is obviously clear that these species
can and do exist in abundance in chilean waters.
Local, uninformed and dumbfounded persons insist first
the water is too warm and in the next breath claim it
is too cold. This is utter nonsense!!
     Should you wish to use my figures (hopefully they
did not get deleted) to use in anyway that helps the
Titicaca grebe problem is fine with me. The truth is
that the disruption of any part of a  life cycle has
perrhaps a very small effect but never the less it is
a negative effect.
     Now I must dig through my deleted files and try to
find my own figures on the amount of guano 30,000,000
birds produce which I still think has a very high
value nutritionally in the phytoplankton.

P. S. shortly I will be trout fishing on lakes SW of
