Hi;

A serious (but minor code wise) issue has been detected in IPS after
starting the year 2004. The issue has been isolated and fixed. A new
drop is being prepared for later today.

The problem causes IPS to crash when processing inbound SMTP messages.
The problem only affects older OS/2 based systems.

Currently the only solution is to make sure the system internal
timezone value is set. That is, the timezone field of the structure
used by DosSet/GetDateTime.

Hi;

As you already noted, the first 1-something version of IPS is now out
in a beta version, the first beta I might add. However, my hopes are
that there won't be to many betas before it is upgraded to the next
level.

The track towards a release is as follows ...

Step 1 - Release public Beta.

Step 2 - Give it time to prove stability and proper operation, if
serious bugs arise they will be fixed and we return to step 1. Now new
features will be added.

Step 3 - Release public Code Candidate, which is a version which is
supposed to be the release quality code. Documentation, read me files
and such may still be worked on. If extremely serious bugs arises they
will be fixed and we are back to step 1. Let us hope that doesn't
happen.

Step 4 - Release public Candidate, which should be the exact same
distribution as the final release. This step may be skipped if code and
distribution is good enough through the steps above.

Step 5 - Release public Release. After this point no more releases will
be done using the same version number.

No dates has been set ¡ this is a spare time project ¡ but I hope we
would reach step 5 as soon as possible. However, to get there fast I
need reports from users. Good or bad reports, I need them all. What I
would like is to hear from users about how they use IPS (platform,
services, traffic) and if there has been any problems with the latest
release. Only when enough time has passed and/or enough feedback is
received can I move IPS on step ahead.

On December 9th 2003, The author Terje Flaarønning released v1.0.0

performance tweaks. It wraps up most of what was the goal for the

released. Based on internal testing and feedback from all you users, it
is my hope that this is the same code base that will make it into a
non-Beta version.

Hi;

Following my post on November 27th ...

The last testing for a InetPowerServer v1.0.0 (Beta) is now running at
selected sites which I monitor directly. I'm a few days behind
schedule, but if no more issues arise you can expect to see v1.0.0
(Beta) available sometime in the first half of the week starting
tomorrow (Yes, here weeks start on monday's, not sunday's).

Hi;

IPS has just gotten its first 1.0.0 version number. This is for now a
development version which I'm working on internally to fix the last few
bugs. I expect it to be made available as a 1.0.0 (Beta) in about one
week if nothing bad happens. Then it would need to prove itself as
non-beta quality for some time while I work on updating documentation
and such. Any bugs that should surface during this period will of
course be attempted fixed. Then when documentation is up to date there
will be a release candidate which also needs to prove itself for some
time before a final release is done. Then, after years of work IPS will
finally see its first non-beta marked release ever.

Hi;

First of all, a bit late, but ... I want to wish you all a Merry
Christmas and when time comes and Happy New Year.

This year has been slow IPS wise, but not a total stand still, there
has been a few alpha version and they have proved very stable. The
reason for not releasing a new public beta is the lack of proper
delivery reporting on e-mail. That is now fixed and after some more
testing you should see another public beta!

Hopefully I will get some more time on my hands in 2003 to increase the
amount of time used on IPS.

Thank you all for your support and feedback!

Hi;

As IPS development is progressing I've found it necessary to drop
support for Windows versions older than Windows 2000. If you still are
running IPS on Windows versions besides Windows 2000 or XP and would
like to continue with that, please speak up in the IPS-list forum.

OS/2 Warp and eComStation support remains unchanged.

Hello;

First of all I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year!

I've finally completed all sections of the documentations Chapter 4 and
it has been uploaded to the IPS site. I hope this helps more of you get
deeper into IPS and over time even more users to use the product.
Please feel free to comment on the work as well as correct my somewhat
poor english language.

The contents available online includes some contents not 100% correct
with the current version. Starting with the next release it should be
in sync. This however is mostly related to 0.9.5 having more default
configuration values than 0.9.4 had, if you stick to configuring
everything in the default files you should be all okay!

Hello;

I've made some more contents available at the bottom of Chapter 4.

After the last public beta and for some time until another release is
ready sometime early next year I will be working slowly on getting most
sections of the documentation filled with contents.

This work is done solo by me again, but I would still like to thank
Yvon which tried to help out for quite some time. Most of the work for
Chapter 3 was done by Yvon.

As for those of you waiting for missing features they will be my
priority as soon as I get this documentations issue on track again. The
current content (not available) is about 1-1,5 years behind the IPS
product as only stopped updating the documentation, not IPS itself when
I got help.

I wish to use this chance to wish you all the best for the holidays!

... Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone ...

Hi;

In the latest versions there has been detected an annoying security
issue which may allow unauthorized shutdown or restart of your IPS
server. As long as you keep "Address=127.0.0.1" in the "[ADMIN]"
section of "ips.cfg" you are safe but also unable to use the remote
console.

If you still need to run the remote console, please modify the
"ClientAddress" setting in the same section to contain only the
specific safe IP addresses before you remove or change the bind
address.

There is no risk of any kind of data access related to this issue, only
a possibility to shutdown or restart your IPS server. Any access are
logged in "ips.log" and "-admin.log". A fix is already ready, but since
I'm away on a business trip and this is more annoying than highly
critical it will not be released before I get home.

The first beta version with working IMAP support is scheduled to be

This team will not be a "I want to get the latest code so I'll join team",

Hi;

There has been a lot of talk regarding IMAP in the OS/2 world lately
and I would like to remind everyone that I will be doing IMAP within
IPS as soon as 1.0 is released. So, the faster 1.0 is ready, the faster
IMAP will be ready as well. That means that I need all the help
possible to get current code working as good as possible.

The more users of current version the faster we find bugs and the
faster I can correct them => the faster I can release 1.0. If you know
people requesting the IMAP service, the best thing they could do to
help is start using already present parts of IPS and speaking their
presence.

So, a request to everyone: Help me get the word out and the user mass
needed to hunt down the last few problems.

I'm using a few hours on the project every single day now, so even if
you don't see much progress from time to time the product is moving
closer to 1.0 every day.

Hi;

As you all know there has been quite a few weeks since the last beta
version of IPS was released. However, there are a few alpha releases
out on test and they are working fine at most test sites.

Since I'm in the middle of a full code walk-over where I read, clean
and optimize if needed every single line of code in the IPS project the
IPS product will be at alpha level for quite some time. Because of that
I will start to release alpha versions to the public whenever I feel
that these versions are good enough for public distribution.

These version will be posted on the web site as usual and I require you
all to post any problem reports as soon as you find them so I get them
while your version is the current one.

Please watch the download space on www.InetPowerServer.com!

Hi;

I did not announce it, but I had planned to release v0.9.3 (Beta)
today. The release will be delayed because I had a very bad file system
crash on my computer yesterday evening and lost one of the core source
files (the IPS class framework). After some 10-12 hours of sector
scanning and I managed to recover the full file so everything should be
ok but since I cannot be 100% sure this is the absolute latest version
I will have to more tests before I can release a public beta version.

My backup was two days old and with around 20 hours of work in mainly
in that during Friday evening and Saturday it was well worth the hours
of manual recovery required as I would have spent far more time to
reconstruct the file to match the rest of the source perfectly.

Please follow this list and the IPS web site at
http://www.InetPowerServer.com/ for information and status of the IPS
project. The feature to-do list and problem report list pages are often
updated to reflect current status. Appendix A in the documentation are
also frequently updated with the latest development progress.

Subject: InetPowerServer download site moved

Hi;

As some of you probably already have noticed I've moved the
ftp://ftp.iq.to/ host to another computer with far better bandwidth
than the previous one. The move is already performed, but cached DNS
information pointing to the old site may still be available.

The move was done due to the very high demand for the latest version.

Since I now know a lot of downloads already is down I would like to
hear any experiences, good or bad. Please post your messages to the
ips-list@... mailing list.

Thanks!
