I guess this can help:
a. testing has several goals:
finding failures (this is like Myers what you mentioned)
generating trust
prevent failures
measure quality
b. and of course the goals primarily depend on management/customers
(who pay you money :-) ) and the TEST LEVEL in which you are
preparing/executing the test (goals are also dependent on other things
like the tester itself,...):
does management want that you find bugs or that you just show, that
software/system works correct (perhaps, so that they can sleep better
:-) )?
do they want a destructive tester or just someone telling what they
would like to hear?
