In this Web seminar, Jason Bloomberg, Senior Analyst and Principal for
ZapThink,
explores the full scope of considerations for SOA quality and how to
address quality
throughout the SOA software lifecycle. Learn why SOA components and
workflows are so
difficult to test and manage by conventional means. Continuous change is
part and
parcel of a Service-oriented deployment environment, and only the most
agile
development and QA teams will survive.
Following Bloomberg's presentation, iTKO Founder and Chief Architect John
Michelsen
will describe how QA and development teams are collaborating on testing
earlier in
development to ensure not just high performance, but achieving 99.999% (or
5 9's)
for functional integrity of these new SOA architectures. Quality and
development
professionals will learn new strategies for continuously testing across
multiple
technologies, to ensure that the "unintended consequences" of changes
within these
constantly evolving workflows doesn't disrupt the business.
In this groundbreaking Web seminar, you will learn:
-The new continuous nature of the SOA software design, development and
deployment lifecycle
-Why SOA components and workflows are so difficult to test and manage
by
conventional means

Please be advised I have released the following "PRIDE" Special Subject Bulletin:
Bulletin #100 - November 6, 2006 - "Entering the Twilight Zone" (in PDF format).
This essay represents my 100th in a series of weekly bulletins I have written over the last two years.
I like to believe I have seen a lot over the last 30 years; customers trying to conquer massive
system problems, luminaries who have impacted the I.T. industry by introducing new ideas, and
charlatans selling the latest snake oil. But I have also found the discourse with the people in both
the trenches and the boardroom to be the most stimulating. From their comments and experiences
I have witnessed not only changes in technology but in management as well, some for better, some
for worse. I have listened to both their frustrations as well as their accomplishments; their successes
and their failures. The passing parade over the years has introduced a multitude of changes, from
large to small. So much so, the corporate landscape is nothing like when I began in the mid-1970's.
Interestingly, I am now at that awkward age where I am considered a radical by my elders and
"out of touch" by my youngers (I like to call this the "Twilight Zone" period of my life).

Mind maps are a way to explore and document ideas and their
relationships in a simple diagram. Important concepts are recorded as
words or pictures and connected with lines indicating their
relationships. While in college, Tony Buzan developed mind maps to save
time in creating and reviewing notes (see the StickyNotes for more
information). Later, he popularized mind maps through lectures, books,
and courses. Today mind maps are used to improve memory, reading skills,
note taking, creativity, performance, and brainstorming.

Please be advised I have released the following "PRIDE" Special Subject Bulletin:
Bulletin #99 - October 30, 2006 - "Implementing a Methodology" (in PDF format).
A methodology is an important part of an overall quality assurance program whereby standard
practices are initiated in order to produce consistent and measurable work products. Ultimately,
it represents discipline, organization, and accountability which the development staff will realize
almost immediately and, as such, will either embrace or resist it. Because it represents a change to
the current operating environment, you should expect developers to resist it as much as new users
resist the introduction of new technology in their business units. Consequently, don't expect a
methodology to install itself.
Please be advised I have released the following "PRIDE" Special Subject Bulletin:
Bulletin #96 - October 9, 2006 - "Are I.T. Workers Blue Collar?" (in PDF format).
Interesting question. I was recently asked this by some executives who were concerned
with improving the productivity of their I.T. departments. I asked them to explain why
they thought this way. They contended their I.T. people (e.g., analysts and programmers)
exhibit a lot of blue collar characteristics, e.g., repetition in types of work performed,
they do not dress or act like professionals, and regularly punch in and out of work with
little interest in going above and beyond the call of duty.
Please be advised I have released the following "PRIDE" Special Subject Bulletin:
Bulletin #98 - October 23, 2006 - "Effective Interviewing" (in PDF format).
Key to any Information Technology development project is the ability to effectively
interview with end-users, people from business units who are not necessarily graced
in the acumen of I.T., yet need solutions to some rather pressing business problems for
their departments. Yet interviewing skills seem to be in decline lately, particularly among
I.T. personnel. Its really not that difficult, but it requires a certain type of person to perform
it adequately; someone who is naturally curious and works well with others, a "people-person."

Techniques to Optimize Your Performance-Test Planning

During functional testing, we focus on the behavior of application
features and execution scenarios on an individual basis. During
performance-testing, we focus on the speed and capacity of the
application rather than functionality. Planning an effective
performance-test requires an understanding of the basic difference
between these two types of tests. For effective performance-tests,
we must create an operational profile defining the types of users
and the load each will put on the system. From a performance-perspective,
it is the effect of this mix of workloads and interactions that we seek
to understand.
During this Web seminar, Dale Perry, consultant for Software Quality
Engineering, will discuss how creating a representative load profile
is one of the key requirements for successful performance-test
planning and critical to effective tool usage. We will look at what
makes up a load profile and how to develop one for your project.
Whether your application is Web, client/server, mainframe, or even
embedded, the same concepts of operational profiles apply.
Later, Joe Fernandes of Empirix will discuss the importance of
adding a solid performance-test plan to your current test process.
Whether testing is done manually or leveraging automated test tools,
functional testing prior to application launch is, for the most part,
an accepted part of the development process. Good performance-testing
is far less common. Whether it's due to lack of time, resources,
knowledge, or commitment, performance-test practices at many organizations
range from limited to non-existent. During this session, Joe will discuss
performance-test execution and provide practical tips and techniques for
adding performance-testing to your current test process.

Bulletin #95 - October 2, 2006 - "What Price Quality?" (in PDF format).
Its interesting, the systems and software industry is one of the few industries that
resists standardization as opposed to embracing it. Standardization is an inherent
part of any quality program. It means devising and applying craftsman-like rules
in the development of a product or service. Such rules substantiates completion
of work in a prescribed sequence and is measurable. And maybe it is this
kind of accountability that developers resist.
Better Software magazine?s Feature Article

I am a big fan of risk-based testing. I have developed, used, and taught
risk-based testing for the past eighteen years. Because we rarely have
enough time to perform the level of testing we?d like, we should
prioritize our tests. This is best done by understanding various product
risks and letting those risks guide our work. However, we must remember
that risk-based testing contains risks. We must not be lulled into a
false sense of security when using this technique.

Finding a good programmer can be a difficult task. Often times you will come across a

too late that he is simply not as proficient as you thought he was. Now you have someone
you will either have to eventually eliminate or invest considerable money in to bring him
up to speed (or both). What to do? True, you should probably improve your interviewing
skills and learn to read between the lines of a resume, but there are a few other things you
can do.

Bulletin #91 - September 4, 2006 - "The Dichotomy of Systems Development Management" (in PDF format).
In order to be a Systems Development Manager, you have to be a lot of things:
front man, educator, mentor, sage, politician, etc. Oh yea, something else, you
also have to be a hypocrite. In order for you to survive in today's corporate
world you have to say one thing to your superiors and staff, but then do
something entirely different in practice. Let me give you some examples...
We recently released a new eBook on management entitled, "The Bryce is Right! Empowering Managers in today's Corporate Culture."
This is a frank and candid description of the state of the art in management and
includes essays on the problems in management today, along with some pragmatic
advice on how to deal with them. Basically, this is a condensed course in
management. As such, it is suited for managers, either those aspiring to become a
manager or for those who need a refresher course. It will also be of interest to
young people entering the work force, and is excellent for college curriculums.
Reviews of the book thus far have been excellent:
Charles Cole of Lyndhurst, OH, said it is a "Very interesting book. Good work! It reminds me of some of the early works I read by
W. Edwards Deming. Too bad the American corporate gurus of his day didn't pay him heed."
And Wolf Hager of Fort Myers, FL, says it is "A very impressive publication which requires careful reading and reminds me somewhat of Peter Drucker."
The price is just $20 plus tax. For more information on our book or to order on-line,
see our corporate web page at: phmainstreet.com/mba

Since 1971: "Software for the finest computer - the Mind"
The last Methods & Tools' poll examined how software configuration
management (change management / version control) is performed by
organisations. Is it an informal activity or performed with formal
procedures that are validated by an automated tool?
Question: How is software configuration management (change
management / version control) performed at your location?
No formal procedure and no tool 15%
A formal procedure but no tool. 10%
A tool but no formal procedure 26%
A formal procedure and a tool 49%
Participants: 346
As you can see a large majority of participants is using a tool, but
the "managed" part of software configuration is less obvious if you
consider the procedural part. Around 40% of participants have no
formal procedure for software configuration. The need for a
procedure depends on the size of the team and the impact of the
developed system. You don't have the same requirements for medical
device software than for a web site. The good results for the
adoption of tools could also be explained by the good development
and adoption of open source software configuration management tools
like CVS or Subversion.
There are some participants that have neither tools nor formal
procedures, but this number should be considered with care as
smaller software development structure have different needs as far
as code sharing or versioning is concerned.
