One might conclude that even plants have their own separate ego-selves, but I think this is missing your point. The One fundamental self underwrites the appearance of plurality to protect the plurality! Nevertheless, the fundamental self is now far from the human ego-selves in their great plurality. If there is this self that is said to be fundamental then it seems to me that there can only be the One self; noted by Plotinus. We all share the One self, but our egoic attachments keep us from
seeing this. The ego is only fooled in seeing itself as a separate self (with the pea plants), it is
not that these separate selves exist beyond what is needed for joint harmony.
And if it is possible for the pea plant and the ego to see itself as separate, then even ghosts (and fallen angels) can exist that see themselves as separate too. None of this invalidates the activity of the plurality, as there must also be a harmony with the One.
