An Implementor's Viewpoint: Innodata-Isogen on DITA (Interview with
Rick Schochler)
In this exclusive TheContentWrangler.com interview with Rick Schochler
of Innodata Isogen, Scott Abel talks to Rick about his company's
experience working with the Darwin Information Typing Architecture
(DITA). While he and his firm see DITA as an excellent "option" for
some organizations, he advises readers to maintain a "healthy
skepticism" when it comes to software tools and their "support" for
DITA. "Some day we'll have tools that will provide some default
functionality," Schochler says. For those who, for whatever business
reasons, decide not to move to DITA, Schochler has this advice: "Get
your data in a tool-neutral format (XML), then choose the content
structure approach that best fits your requirements."

Hope to see you there. Remember registration closes April 3, 2006.
The results of last week's poll are in and 100% of you said you though
DITA would change how you create technical documents and on-line
information in the future?
Thank you for responding. Watch your email for future polls.
I knew you would have this type of information. I'll pass it along
to the folks who are not on this list, but were asking about this.
Thanks.

Hi, Greg.
Tried to respond directly to your e-mail but I couldn't get through
your server ("Denied:Spam banned infoave.net"). So, responding here.
I thanked you for the info on JoAnn Hackos's free webinar coming up.
You asked, "How did you end up in a DITA users group if you don't
use DITA?"
Answer: I'm interested in the principles of modular (aka topic-
oriented) writing. It's a great way to think when planning print
documentation of any kind, which is mostly what I do, and it will
become even more important as I come into opportunities to create
online documentation.
I've only recently learned about DITA (from an article in a recent
Society for Technical Communication journal) and thought that I
might tag along with some discussions to see what I could learn
about modular writing that could be applied in nonDITA contexts. I'm
also just curious about content management in general and find it
fascinating to hear what's going on in that world.

Diane:
You can find some real numbers in almost any DITA case study or
interview. In fact, on my site, the latest DITA interview is with ICOS,
a Belgian firm. They estimate they'll be able to reuse 80% of the DITA
Topics they created. They have not yet been able to measure translation
savings, which with so much reuse, will also be significant (probably
the largest savings).
www.thecontentwrangler.com
There are other examples...
For instance, in another interview I edited, software maker Idiom says:
"We are currently reusing about 5% of our docset. In the next release,
we expect that figure to increase to around 60%, when we single-source
the guides and the online help (which are currently not
single-sourced)...We haven't translated the docset yet. By the time we
do, there should be enough single-sourcing that translation cost will
be optimized because we'll only need to translate reused content once."
http://www.travelthepath.com/structure4.html
In a similar interview with Adobe, the software maker estimates it's
able to reuse 25% of the content it first put into DITA. They also saw
these additional benefits: "We were able to focus on creating content,
not formatting it.
Authors did not have to worry about formatting and could concentrate on
the structure of the content instead. Additionally, the schema served
as a guide to authors on what to enter next. Content re-use meant less
maintenance. Authors could place content references to shared topics
instead of copying and pasting them into different locations.
Consistent output was a big benefit. We could build the same output at
the click of a button. There was no desktop publishing work needed.
And, we were able to use XQuery to run powerful searches across the
content. It was easy to write reports to check for missing images,
broken cross-references, erroneous index terms, etc. "
http://www.travelthepath.com/structure3.html
In the near future, I'll be publishing more interviews with others
using DITA to see what we can learn from them.
Hope this helps!

I gave an introductory presentation about DITA at the February Indiana STC meeting. In my opinion, the greatest obstacle to understanding DITA lies in changing the author's paradigm from writing in books or narratives to writing topics.
I base this opinion on the number of questions I answered similar to:
How do I find the information I want in the database?
What if a topic is written, and later someone writes it in a different format?
OK, we have a topic. Now how do we know how long it can be and what it can contain?
In order to learn to think "topic-ally" you might consider watching a free webinar by
Blast Radius entitled DITA: Moving from Books to Topics. The speaker is
JoAnn Hackos, PhD, President/CEO of Comtech Services, Inc.
It is not difficult. Only takes a couple of minutes.
If these complex URLs are not clickable, I suggest that you copy and paste to get them correct. Even a Technical Communication Wizard would have trouble typing all of that info correctly.
Another thing that I know you can probably answer is the question of how using DITA "pays." This came up at the STC meeting last month ("how does all that support my business/management needs?") and I thought you might know of some resourses that have shown a ROI for DITA. I thought IBM had some ficticious examples that illustrated it well, but are there any real numbers?

in technical communication circles these days, I wanted to offer up
this list of resources that might prove useful to those just starting
to learn about DITA.

1) DITA 2006: March 23-25, 2006 - Raleigh, NC. Meet, mingle and learn
from IBM's Dave Schell, the creator of DITA, and other Darwinian
luminaries at DITA 2006, March 23-25, 2006 in Raleigh, NC. Hands-on
workshops, case studies, and product demonstrations (including a full
vendor exhibition) will be featured along with white papers,
presentations, and discussion groups. A call for papers is expected in
late August 2005 and a full conference schedule will be announced
shortly thereafter. DITA 2006 is being co-sponsored by OASIS and will
be the first event of it's kind -- dedicated entirely to educating
attendees about the Darwin Information Typing Architecture. Learn more:

Introduction
I am a technical
writer/editor working at Precisely Write, Inc. in Fishers, Indiana. I am familiar with HTML and
Information Mapping. I recently attended the FrameMaker conference in North Carolina where dita was a major topic [no pun intended:-)].
Be sure and check out the links posted for the
group. Click Links in the menu to the left.

Our new user group is growing daily, so why don't we start the
conversation rolling by introducing to the whole group who we are and
where we are with DITA.
I am a technical writer new to DITA. I understand the basic idea of
topic typing, but not the detail. I am also new to XML, so I may be at
a disadvantage.
So far, what I have learned about DITA has come from the IBM web site
and the OASIS web site, not to mention a few articles sprinkled
around the web. Is anyone planning on attending the DITA conference
in North Carolina in March?
February 16, 2006 - Chapter Meeting, Indianapolis

5:30 pm, "Meet and Greet" networking
6:00 pm, presentation, question-and-answer session to follow
Meeting Venue: IU Emerging Technology Center, 351 West 10th Street,

Directions: 317-278-1901
Meeting cost: FREE and open to members and non-members alike
For our February and March meetings, we will be meeting in the Bose-
Mckinney room at the IU Emerging Technology Center. As always, we'll
have snacks and coffee.
Meeting Description
Join Greg Whetsel of Precisely Write, Inc., certified technical
communications specialist and Indiana STC chapter member, as he
blazes a trail of discovery down a path from Burlesque to Darwin
Information Typing Architecture (DITA). Greg will share his
explorations (and exploits) about this mysterious way to structure
documents according to topic typing (not the verb, the gerund). For
example, Greg learned that nearly anything can be a topic, but
exactly what type of topic is something altogether different. DITA
includes a general topic structure that is specialized (that's DITA
talk) into concept, task, and references. Don't be confused about
DITA any longer, and don't be left behind. Join Greg, Precisely
Write, Inc., and the Indiana STC faithful to begin your quest for
the elusive DITA.
Welcome to the new Indianapolis DITA users group sponsored by
Precisely Write, Inc.
We hope you will join in the discussion of this emerging information
architecture and use this group as a way to share and learn more about
DITA.
As the conversation grows, watch for future announcements on
presentations, meetings, and more about DITA!

Precisely Write, Inc.
