Kayza: RE branding: yes, but I had mentioned bit.ly because they are the easiest
service that provides click rate statistics. (Create a bit.lyaccount and all
bit.ly links created after that point will be counted and summarized in the home
screen). It would be one way of measuring the effectiveness of the email sigs -
whether people click them at all or not.

Happy New Year All!

I've been using the Benton/SBC/Robert Woods Johnson/NPower "Technology Literacy
Benchmarks for Nonprofit Organizations" for tech assessments. I like the layout
and organization very much. Some time back, it occurred to me that Page 27 is
WRONG and one of you savvy people supplied me with that missing page.

Fast forward to now, one computer crash later. A local college prof wants to use
the benchmarks in his MIS for Nonprofits course, and of course we need that
missing page. Anybody?

Or, better yet, does anyone have an instrument they like better? When I was
looking, a year ago, I didn't find anything as good, even though this one is
woefully out of date (Web 2.0 is missing altogether, for example.) It's easier
to make up new sections to reflect today's tech literacy than it is to use the
clunky Excel stuff I found then.

So: What are you using to assess the tech literacy of the nonprofits you're
working with? And/Or: Have you got Page 27 you could email me?

I encourage you to visit http://www.tutormentorprogramlocator.net and review the
interactive map, the searchable program locator and the Map Gallery. This can be
used by people to find volunteer opportunities and/or student placements in
tutor/mentor programs. However, it's primary goal is that it is used by leaders
in business, philanthropy, government, etc. to determine where these programs
are needed, what level of distribution now exists for different types of
programs, serving different age groups, and what strategies can be deployed to
help existing programs get the continuous operating dollars and other resources
needed for constant improvement, as well as ways to build new programs in areas
with voids.

The maps are part of a much larger library of information hosted at
http://www.tutormentorconnection.org

This is still a work in progress because of inconsistent funding and I'm not
sure it meets all of the criteria for your list. However, it's a model that many
may be interested in.

>> This is to remind you that if you have developed (or are currently

is focused on (or will focus on) serving nonprofit, philanthropic, or
community-based organizations. - It offers (or will offer) data about needs in
the community - or data about assets, capacities. and resources that are
available to meet those needs - or both. - The potential exists (or will exist)
for data interchange, search, or aggregation. Please note that if what you have
is a simply a web site with great content about your favorite topic, or a great
piece of software that you'd like to promote anywhere you can without regard for
whether it is actually the kind of tool that we're seeking, then it's not
eligible to be listed in our directory. Please also note that if you are simply
seeking to advertise your services as a developer, you are not eligible to be

contribute to matching needs and resources for organizations that benefit the

Dear Dan,

The GIS/mapping work of the Tutor/Mentor program is so great that it's
definitely worth reminding everyone on the list about it!

As for whether it meets the four criteria that I previously mentioned
for the directory that I'm compiling - that's your call. If you think

Alternatively, you could create a separate entrance page on your website and use
its URL solely for email sigs. Then look at the statistics available on your

Here's a trick that I've used to track traffic sources without having to create
and manage another page: add an identifier at the end of the URL. For example,
if you want people to land on www.home.org/campaign.asp, you can add "?"
followed by identifying text. The "?" does not change where a user lands (they
would still get to home.org), but your analytics program will likely be able to
track it as a separate URL.

Here's an example: www.home.org/campaign.asp?src=sig

Also note that if you add the "?" directly following the root URL, you will need
to either add a slash (e.g. www.home.org/?src=sig) or use the full address (e.g.
www.home.org/index?src=sig).

I mimicked this method from some of the email campaign services out there but am
definitely still an amateur when it comes to web design, so if anyone has any
caveats, please share.

Dear ISF Colleagues,

The Short Awards are all about recognizing the best producers of short
real time content. In other words, this is about using Twitter to
deliver the news.

I note with interest that nominations are open in the "nonprofit"
category <http://shortyawards.com/category/nonprofit> and the "tech"
category <http://shortyawards.com/category/tech>, but that there isn't
an "NPtech" category.

Well, maybe we should have one. For example, Beth Kanter
<http://twitter.com/kanter> would make a great nominee.

If you already have a Twitter account, and you'd like to vote up Beth
in the nomination process for a Shorty Award, here's how to do it:

1) Go to <http://shortyawards.com/>, and find "Shorty Voting"

2) Edit the message box so that it reads "I nominate @kanter for a
Shorty Award in #nptech because (add your reason here)"

3) Click on "Tweet your vote"

4) Enter your Twitter name and password, and then click "Allow"

It could possibly wreck some CMSs, especially on poorly-configured web servers
w/o mod_rewrite, which rely on the GET string. Admittedly unlikely, but just
make sure you aren't going to break something by adding that -- in other words,
test it first. :)

(As an example: my current gmail window has a url of
http://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#inbox ; if you add another ? you could mess
things up; you'd need an & instead.)

A dedicated redirect is probably safer, though this way is more convenient if it
works for you.

I wouldn't rule the method out, but there are caveats.

.asp , .pl .php .cfm .jsp, etc, etc files are generally scripts, or at least can
have scripts emmbeded in the static html

The parts of the URL after the '?' are inputs to the script.

Well written scripts complain if they are given unexpected inputs.

Badly written scripts fail if they are given unexpected inputs.

A careful person might find out what campaign.asp is supposed to do before
supplying it unexpected inputs.

Or not, a lot of times people include only static html in these types of pages.

Hi folks. I'm looking for a suite of tools to do performance benchmarking and
hardware diagnostics. Goals of set are:

- Professional Duty

- As hands off as possible - start running, leave, return to get
results (definitely not a bundle of 40 tools I have to run individually)

- Non-os dependent - bootable cd or usb drive solution preferably (I
don't care if it's a bootable linux cd or something, but need tools that don't
have to be installed on a functioning OS on the computer)

I'm open to other suggestions, that is just my dream list. I would like to know
about tools for a specific OS that are available (such as Win XP), but I'm also
looking for knoppix type solutions that can be used on a computer with a crashed
hard drive for example.

Thank you!

Bob,

Keep in mind that while the Salesforce licenses are free, one still has to pay
for an implementer to build the database. Unless you plan to do it in-house, of
course.

One of the best off-the-shelf solutions I've seen is the DonorPro package.
Check that out if you like at http://www.donorpro.com.

Dear ISF Colleagues,

As many of you know, one of my pro bono side projects is running the
Nonprofit Tech Jobs list. It's run as a free service to the community, on
the assumption that connecting technology professionals with jobs in the
nonprofit and philanthropic sector is a pretty good thing.

I've gotten to the point where I've rolled up several feeds (from the email
distribution list, from NTEN, and from Idealist) into a dedicated Twitter
account <http://twitter.com/NPtechJobs>. Now what I'd like to do is channel
all that into the Nonprofit Tech Jobs account on Delicious <
http://delicious.com/nptechjobs>, but I can't figure out a way to transmit
links from Twitter to Delicious automatically. (At first, I thought that
Ping.fm might do the trick, but while you can use Ping to transmit
simultaneously to Twitter and Delicious, I don't see a way to use it to port
a Twitter feed into a Delicious feed.)

Any suggestions?

Many thanks from Deborah

Deborah,

I think concept-wise, it would be a two step process:

1. Use Yahoo Pipes to grab the Twitter RSS feed, identify the text string within
the content enclosure beginning with http:// and ending with a blank space, and
overwrite the item URL with it. (The original item URL will be the tweet
permalink)

2. Use ping.fm to post this retouched Yahoo Pipes RSS feed to delicious. ping.fm
had this warning message, though:

> *Delicious has recently moved to an OAuth platform for authentication. New >
delicious users won't be able to authenticate their accounts until Delicious >
opens up the API so we can upgrade. Sorry for the mess!* > Does this mean
delicious accounts created after a certain point cannot be used by ping.fm? Not
sure, but my personal acct, which was created in 2005, seemed to authenticate
fine.

...but wait, did you say you already tried to post to delicious using ping.fm? I
believe it's possible even without step 1 - it's just cosmetically bothersome
because it will link to each tweet instead of the link directly, but it still
works, no? Check https://ping.fm/delicious/while logged in.

I believe people haven't made a mashable like this because step 1 is highly
error conducive - there's prone to be more than one link in a twitter feed, and
what is the app supposed to do then? Not all feeds are strict on format like the
NPtechJobs twitter acct.

Dear ISF Colleagues,

Here's the response from the good folks at Delicious. I'm going to
give it a shot.

As for using Ping.fm - what I've found this far is that I can cut and
paste stuff into Ping, but I haven't found a way to channel tweets
automatically from Twitter to Ping to all of the other places I might
want it to go. Near as I can tell, Ping is just not set up to
transfer messages from Twitter to Delicious, or from Delicious to
Twitter, for that matter.

As you'll hear, many of us were excited about by Procrasdonate - not

Bob,

I worked with Aspiration to put together a list of every donor database we could
identify. It's now on Social Source Commons:
http://socialsourcecommons.org/toolbox/show/1661

In the course of that research we decided that Devolio and DonorAccess no longer
exist as supported products. Here is a 2-part list of databases I think are
defunct:

http://www.rlweiner.com/defunct-donor-databases

http://www.rlweiner.com/more-defunct-donor-databases

Have you looked at Idealware's Consumers Guide to Low Cost Donor Management
Systems? http://www.idealware.org/low_cost_donor/download.php It talks about the
Salesforce starter pack as well as Convio's version (Common Ground), plus lots
of other "inexpensive" databases. While most cost more than $500 (the cutoff
was $4,250 in the first year for 1 user), a few truly inexpensive systems are
discussed, like Giftworks, Exceed! Basic, BasicFunder, LifeLine, EasyWare, and
ODB.

As others have said, you need to be aware that Salesforce is free as in puppies
- it usually requires lots of care and feeding, and can get quite expensive if
the organization isn't prepared to do that work themselves.

Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
Featured guests: Tom Pollak and Doug Denatale, developers of the
Massachusetts Nonprofit Database

More information can be found here: <http://ow.ly/ZSRp>.

The Massachusetts Nonprofit Database has immense potential
significance. First of all, it is a powerful tool for nonprofit
organizations. Secondly, it can be extremely informative (i.e.,
"eye-openng") for anyone who is thinking of starting a new program or
organization intended to benefit the community. Thirdly, it will be
crucial for anyone who believes in greater accountability and
transparency for organizations that are granted tax-exempt status.

Please join us on February 16th for this opportunity to see for yourself.

the puzzle are in place - now we need to supply the missing pieces and
focus on the goal.

What types of software should your nonprofit be using?  It's hard to
even know what exists, let alone what is best for your organization.
Through a friendly, easy-reference format, Idealware's 2010 Field
Guide to Software for Nonprofits: Fundraising, Communications and

your organization's effectiveness and efficiency. And it de-mystifies

needs and technical maturity.

your needs, how much you might expect to pay, and some of the most
common vendors in the area.
