Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I'd like to thank the folks who have contacted me off list to express
interest in organizing a one-day social media campaign to raise
awareness that unsolicited bulk email from nonprofits is spam!

There's still time to jump on the bandwagon. If you want to
participate, please email me off list.

Many thanks and best regards from Deborah

P.S. If you're interested in my thoughts about nonprofit spam, please

Dear ISF Colleagues,

Please check out this article by Holly Ross, the executive director of
the Nonprofit Technology Network:

"The NPTech Response to Japan"
<http://ow.ly/4d1P6>

In addition to turning our thoughts and prayers to the folks affected
by this natural disaster, I hope that we'll all be thinking about how
we can use our nonprofit technology skills to help.

I'd also say that this is a great opportunity to learn about capacity
mapping and resource matching from emergency response experts,
although in a carefully qualified way. It's not that I'm grateful
that there's been an earthquake and tsunami of unprecedented severity
- but as long as it has occurred, let's keep an eye out for brilliant
use of online tools that help the global community respond
effectively.

Best regards from Deborah

In case you happen to be near Chapel Hill in mid-April, you are welcome
to join us and/or encourage nonprofits that you work with to attend this
conference. The agenda for Friday is awesome and the unconference on
Saturday offers an opportunity to further explore areas of special interest.

Also, sponsorship opportunities are still available.

Registration Now Open for 2011 NCTech4Good Conference April 15-16

The second annual NCTech4Good Conference <http://www.nctech4good.org/>,
Technology Solutions for Nonprofits, is a two-day meeting that offers
information, networking and social activities to staff, consultants and
volunteers of North Carolina nonprofit and social service organizations,
plus small businesses.

The meeting consists of a general opening session; three concurrent
presentations at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels on "tools,
emerging technologies and solutions"; exhibits of related products and
services; a luncheon; and an early evening reception.

An "unconference" the following day will give participants an
opportunity to "continue the conversation" by exploring topics not fully
developed during the conference, plus others of mutual interest. This
informal setting is characterized by small break-out groups using the
latest technology for collaborative discussions.

The unconference includes a casual lunch, plus an assortment of snacks
and beverages available throughout the day.

The NCTech4Good Conference will be held on Friday, April 15, 2011, at
the William & Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education. The informal
"unconference" will be held on Saturday, April 16, at Duke University's
HASTAC (pronounced "haystack").

The Friday Center for Continuing Education is across from Meadowmont
Village in Chapel Hill at 100 Friday Center Drive, off NC Highway 54
East. HASTAC is at the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute, 114
South Buchanan Boulevard (Bay 4) in downtown Durham.

The cost of the conference is $75 through April 1, and the unconference
is $10. For complete information and registration forms, please visit
our Website at www.nctech4good.org <http://www.nctech4good.org>.
(Potential sponsors may also use the registration forms to indicate the
sessions and conference features they'd like to underwrite.)

In response to popular demand, I have updated my directory of local
nonprofit technology assistance providers (NTAPs).

You can download it in two spreadsheet formats:

2) NTAPs sorted by the formal business name of the provider

To download either version, please go to:

deborah909
Send Email Send Email

Dear ISF Colleagues,

I have an esteemed client that is making great first steps in using
social media, and wants to work on analyzing metrics not only for
online communications but for all of their communications.

They are looking for the ultimate online tool, a web-based
communications dashboard that will help them track the effectiveness
of all the communications they do in channels such as:

- U.S. mail

- Email (including e-bulletins sent from tools such as Constant Contact)

- Twitter

- Facebook

- Posting to other online communities

- Their blog

- Their web site

Obviously, they would have to enter information about non-internet
communications such as U.S. mail, but they are hoping for something
that would talk to services such as Twittercounter, Google analytics,
Hootsuite. Bitly. If on top of that it could also talk to the CRM
(Salesforce) so that they could compare what they are getting to
records of constituents' Twitter handles, email addresses, Facebook
pages - well, so much the better.

I realize that there are many extremely powerful platforms that are
the software equivalent of Swiss army knives that they could customize
to do most of this - but they aren't looking to build a dashboad from
scratch. They are looking for something that already exists and has
been built with nonprofit organizations in mind.

Any suggestions?

Many, many thanks from Deborah

What’s even worse is the nonprofits who send junk postal mail, even when
specifically requested not to at the time you make your donation. What’s even
worse than that is when it is an environmental organization. By far the worst
offender is Sierra Club. We have been trying for almost three years to stop the
deluge of junk (as many as three pieces per week), including contacting the
leadership several times. With so many other excellent environmental
organizations out there, I can’t see any reason to support one that insists on
polluting through junk mail. (I understand the need for NPs to do mail
solicitation; the issue here is the sheer volume and the refusal to abide by a
stakeholder request.)

without trying to revisit the entire argument here, I'm wondering if those who
agree with me would be interested in a one-day "No Nonprofit Spam" campaign. The
basic idea would be to spread the word on Twitter, Facebook, email lists, and

Dear Keith,

There you go, kicking butt and taking names!*

Seriously, I do wonder if naming names will help. What if we Tweeted

unsolicited bulk email from them? I don't think it would be effective
in itself, but perhaps as part of a larger campaign strategy?

That could turn around and generate more spam – IMO too many believe the
phrase “there is no such thing as bad publicity” (even though I personally
think there IS such a thing as bad publicity when it comes to NPO’s) – I
prefer the approach of:

1. request to be removed from spam lists, and if spam continues

2. request a second time (more forcefully), and if spam continues

3. block all email from the NPO and register them on SpamHaus and other global
spam black lists. Also (if appropriate) advise authorities of the breach of law.

Hi Keith,

I don't think my post has come back through the IS list yet? - Deborah are we
having problems with the list atm?

In our experience SpamCop is more draconian and prone to more false positives
than SpamHaus - Also SpamHaus provides the option of using one of several
blacklists based on different algorithms, the SBL, CSS, XBL or PBL blacklists,
or of combining and using all (zen.spamhaus.org) - I look after several orgs
that rely on zen.spamhaus.org, and one within a Clearswift Mailsweeper gateway
environ that is proving very effective at stopping spam.

More info on SpamHaus at www.spamhaus.org

Dear ISF Colleagues,

The question came up in another thread about whether it helps to name the
names of the nonprofit organizations that send us unsolicited bulk email.

I don't really know the answer, but here's an experiment. We've set up a
"Meet The Perps" page on the "No Nonprofit Spam" blog:

<http://nononprofitspam.wordpress.com/meet-the-perps/>

The idea is to list the nonprofit organizations (and where possible, their
email service providers). It will be slow going this week, since many of us
are at the Nonprofit Technology Conference, but I'm looking forward to
piling up a list and seeing what happens.

Dear ISF Colleagues,

I'm back from the Nonprofit Technology Conference (#11ntc), and am
slowly reintegrating myself into ordinary reality! As I do, I want to
be sure to pay tribute to a member of the ISF community, Peter
Campbell. He received the 2011 NTEN Award:

<http://www.nten.org/blog/2011/03/15/2011-nten-award-peter-campbell>

I was one of the folks asked by John Merritt (who presented the award)
to write tributes to Peter. Here's what I wrote:

_______________________________________

I want to congratulate Peter, but not for winning the NTEN
Award.

I'm very ambivalent about such awards. It's too easy to
mistake the accolade for the accomplishment.

What Peter has achieved in the NTEN community is not an
award, and not even recognition. It's a very felicitous combination
of expertise, willingness to serve, ability to create collaborative
relationships, good judgement, and kindness.

When I'm around Peter, I feel very relaxed. I can see that
he cares, that he listens, that he understands, and that he
responds generously. In other words, he is a good friend - not
just to me, but to the NTEN community. He is also very funny,
which sets off his virtues quite nicely.

So I heartily congratulate Peter Campbell for who he is and
what he does. The NTEN Award is just an occasion to
conspire with others to tell him how much he means to us.

_______________________________________

Please join me in telling Peter how much we appreciate him!

Dear ISF Colleagues,

Remember, this is the grant program that provides cash grants to
nonprofits that want to use information and communication technology
to advance their missions. Instead of a conventional grant proposal
narrative, you are asked to submit a very short poem about your
mission.

Dear ISF Colleagues,

A number of you asked for the line to the online version the NTC session
that Kathleen Malin and I presented on "Going Online for Capacity Mapping
and Resource Matching: The Big Picture."

I'm pleased to make it available here:

It has been updated to reflect accurately the projects that were
demonstrated during the "speed-geeking" portion of the session, and also
lists the names of the good folks who were offering the demonstrations.

Many thanks are due to them!

(Dear ISF Colleagues:  This may be of interest to many of you outside
of Massachusetts - at least, I heard from a lot of folks who weren't
able to travel to attend the face-to-face event at the Ethos
Roundtable last week, when George gave us a demo of the Philanthropic
Directory.  Although the pilot project takes the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts as its scope, the project can certainly be scaled up
nationally or even internationally.  If you're interested in an online
Philanthropic Directory for your geographic area, I recommend this
webinar.  Best regards from Deborah.  P.S. Full disclosure of
financial relationship: I am not being paid to promote this.  I am
merely a fan!)

The MPD is an on-line, systematic, analytical, Directory to all
philanthropic charities of Massachusetts—a central resource for
donors, grantmakers, philanthropic advisors, executive directors,
fundraisers, journalists, scholars, students—everyone in and around
Massachusetts philanthropy. See all of philanthropy and only
philanthropy, for the first time separated from "nonprofits"
(philanthropic charities are fewer than 10% of nonprofits). See how
philanthropy is systematically organized in three basic fields—Nature,
Culture, People—branching out logically into over 200 subfields. See
and chart their geographic, fiscal, historical, demographic, structure
and distribution.

Dear Reed, and other esteeemed colleagues:

Thanks for saying so!

I think that the folks in the session who had never tried
speed-geeking* before were skeptical about the format, but it's one of
those things you have to experience in order to understand.

Fortunately, we not only had a good format, but a terrific topic, and
a superlative team of folks who provided eight consecutive five-minute
demos. Not to mention Kathleen Malin (the other session organizer)
and Christine Egger (who used her signature methods of gentle
persuasion to keep folks moving through the speed-geeking process).

Again, the online version of the handout can be found at

Dear ISF Colleagues,

One of the many cool announcements at #11NTC was the publication of
"NTEN:Change," our professional association's online journal about
nonprofit technology. I'm delighted to be serving on the editorial
board.

The new journal's intended audience is nonprofit leaders and decision
makers, so it's the perfect publication to circulate among the members
of your senior management team.

Hi,

Teambox (project management software similar to Basecamp) have
recently made their product free for government agencies, NGO's and
non profits world wide. They'll also provide free support in setting
up local editions for groups which need it due to lack of internet
access.

We're happily using Basecamp, so my only experience with Teambox is
from colleagues who have said really good things about it. However
it's probably worth looking into if you're in need of better project
management tools.

Dear ISF Colleagues,

Lisa McNeill of Cape Cod Volunteers will be joining us at the April
session of the Ethos Roundtable. We hope that you'll be there as well!

Tuesday, April 19, 2011
4:30 - 6:00 pm
Charles Hotel
1 Bennett Street
Harvard Square, Cambridge
Featured guest: Lisa McNeill, President of Cape Cod Volunteers

Full information about this Ethos Roundtable session, including
directions for driving or taking public transportation can be found
here:

http://ow.ly/4l9WC

Here's a little bit about our esteemed featured guest:
Lisa McNeill started Cape Cod Volunteers in November 2010 after
researching and developing the initiative for almost 4 years while at
the Cape Cod Foundation. As Vice President of the Cape Cod Foundation,
Lisa's responsibilities included oversight of grantmaking and special
program initiatives as well as various aspects of organizational
management and donor services. Prior to joining the Cape Cod
Foundation, Lisa was Executive Director of the Cape Cod Center for
Sustainability and worked with community leaders to publish the first
Sustainability Indicators Report for the region in 1999. Lisa served
as a member of the Sustainability Indicators Council through 2006.

Lisa holds a Masters degree in International Development and Community
Development from The American University in Washington, DC, and a
Bachelors degree in Business Management and Marketing from St. Joseph
College. She has worked on democracy building and nonprofit support
programs in El Salvador, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and she
spent two years living in Japan and teaching English to students of
all ages.

Please remember that there's never any need to make a reservation to
attend Ethos Roundtable events. Just come if you can, and feel free to
invite others! However, if you're planning to attend the Boston 501
Tech Club event immediately thereafter (6:00 pm) in the same venue, we
ask that you send an email to Kathleen Sherwin of TechFoundation
(ksherwin AT techfoundation DOT org). Since TechFoundation is
providing the free food, it's both courteous and prudent to let her
know how much to order.

See you on April 19th!
