Dear Colleagues,
Um. Just a little clarification, as requested:
The TechNights (July 23rd through July 26th, 6:00 - 8:00 pm) will be held at
TechFoundation headquarters near Harvard Square. Here are the directions:
Driving from Route 90 (Massachusetts Turnpike)
Follow Route 90 East toward Cambridge/Boston and take Exit 18
(Allston/Brighton/Cambridge)
After the tollbooth, stay right and follow the signs for Cambridge
Go straight through the lights and over the bridge
After you cross the bridge, take a left at the lights onto Memorial Drive
At the third set of lights, take a right onto J.F. Kennedy Street
Turn left at the next traffic light onto Eliot Street
At the next set of lights, bear left onto Bennett Street; the Charles Hotel
will be on your left
Just after the entrance to the Charles Hotel, turn left into the parking
garage
Immediately after you get your ticket from the machine, you will see an
elevator on your right marked "To Charles Square Offices." Once you have
parked your car take this elevator to the Lobby level
Exit from the elevator, turn right and then right again into the elevator
lobby
Take the elevator to the 4th floor, enter our lobby, and we will have a
person there to greet you.
Driving from Route 128 via Route 2
Take Route 128 Exit 29A to Route 2 East towards Arlington/Cambridge
At the end of Route 2 you will come to a fork and a set of traffic lights.
Bear right at the fork onto Alewife Brook Parkway
Go through two more traffic lights and then, at the first rotary, go 3/4 of
the way around (the equivalent of a left turn)
At the next rotary, bear right
Continue on through three sets of lights, crossing Huron Avenue, Brattle
Street, and Mt. Auburn Street, and then bear left at the next lights and
turn onto Memorial Drive
Turn left at the next light onto J.F.
From Route 93:
Take exit 26 - Storrow Drive
Stay on Storrow Drive for just over 4 miles and then bear right at the
Harvard Square/Cambridge exit
Take a right at the traffic light, go over the bridge, and continue straight
ahead through the next traffic light. You are now on J.F.

Dear Colleagues,
ONE/Northwest (a nonprofit in Seattle that provides information technology
assistance to environmental groups in their region) has just published an
outstanding electronic newsletter on the total cost of technology for
nonprofits. To see it, go to http://www.onenw.org/onelist/ and go to Volume
5, Issue 7. And while you're at it, check out their Activist Toolkit at
http://www.onenw.org/toolkit/. The latter contains everything from very
basic hardware recommendations to tips for electronic advocacy.
This is a terrific example of a group that, while working in a very specific
sector and region, is making a generous measure of its expertise available
through the internet to the entire nonprofit community.

I have been, recently, engaging in discussions about how best to measure
the success of a nonprofit "Learning Community" web site, and what
constitutes success. This is possibly an unanswerable question, as each
web site is unique in its missions and goals. Is there anyone on this list
that is aware of resources, or able to offer comment on this subject?

In the implementation of the Knowledge City at the University of São Paulo
(www.usp.br/iea/cidade) we are developing methodologies to do that.
A first attempt, in progress, is the creation of a group of professionals
from differentes areas: education, computer science, anthropology, economics
and sociology. We are using surveys with participants as well as
experts'views on the performance of the community.
Different aspects are at stake: from purely pedagogical issues related to
learning practices and cognitive development to scorecards used in the
evaluation of knowledge management and return on investments in "human
capital".

Wayne: I would imagine there are a number of ways to measure website
success, depending on the communication applications on the learning
community website (chat rooms, listservs, online courses, etc) and do these
applications reflect the mission of the organization. Our Maryland Society
for Clinical Social Work-Guild 49 site has all of these applications. if
your website has a hit counter, I think the number of returning "customers"
would be one way to determine success.

To: Information Systems Colleagues
I have worked with non-profit organizations for years. From my
experience, I find that the most
successfuly non-profit organizations operate with much of the same
organizational structures of a for-profit business organization.
Therefore, I would recommend that you look to measures of successful
business or government websites.
I wish to offer the following websites that have extensive information
on web and Internet metrics.
www.cio.com The website of the magazine for Information Executives
www.pti.org The website of Public Technology Inc., the leading
resource for cities and local government on-line.
www.morino.org Has extensive knowledge on impact of technology on society.
The book "Competing on Internet Time" offers extensive real world
business knowledge and experience on the
battle between Netscape and Microsoft in their efforts to dominate the
Internet.
I have found that the above resources give some of the best availabe
information on how to measure success in Internet efforts.

Just a couple quick thoughts, Wayne and all. There is not an answer
waiting to be discovered. There is the potential for a process of
defining the data that can answer the question and finding a way to
extract that data from the activities/stakeholders involved.

Dear Colleagues,
We are seeking nonprofit organizations in the Boston area that are
interested in sponsoring our Geeks For America volunteers.
The Geeks for America program trains recent college graduates, who commit to
work for a nonprofit for one year, to address the organization's information
technology needs. Geeks are chosen for their educational and extracurricular
experience with technology, and their commitment to public service. The
program is piloting in the Boston area, with a goal of building a model
replicable on a national scale. Geeks will receive internships that are
supported in part by the participating nonprofits and subsidized through
corporate sponsorship and other philanthropic donations.
Nonprofit sponsors of a Geek from TechFoundation's Geeks for America Program
benefit from the following:
- Unique solution to the shortage of competent technical support
professionals;
- Tech support in both major office applications and basic networking
environments;
- On-going training keeps the Geek current with new applications, while
addressing any individual needs;
- Training and support services for the Geeks are paid for by th
Program;
- TechFoundation staff work with nonprofit sponsors to customize each
assignment to suit individual needs.
To sponsor a Geek from TechFoundation's Geeks for America Program your
organization must meet the following criteria:
- Hold 501(c) 3 status with a current letter of determination from the
IRS;
- Meet fundamental financial and administrative capacity criteria for
hosting a Geek as determined by TechFoundation;
- Contribute a portion of the Geek's compensation ($15,000 for a
12-month full FTE-- an additional $15,000, plus benefits, plus training is
paid by the program)
- Commit a supervisor with technical background and systems knowledge
to provide local management and support to the Geek;
- Allow the Geek to participate in continuing technical education on a
regular basis during the Geek's year placement;
- Commit to working with TechFoundation to evaluate the program in
process.
If you are interested in sponsoring a TechFoundation Geek at your nonprofit,
please contact us at geeks@... This is a limited opportunity
so please inquire promptly.

Subject: MIMC Digital Juice - Tuesday, July 24th
(snip)
MIMC Digital Juice
Sponsored by: Adobe Systems, Inc.
Presented by: MIMC and UDA (United Digital Artists)
---------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, July 24th * 6:30am - 9:00pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Apple Market Center, 28 State Street, 9th Floor, Boston, MA
Free Admission for MIMC Members and Non-members
This month's Digital Juice is a three-ring circus! Not lions and tigers and
bears (oh my!) but networking, cool hardware and hot software. Plus we'll
have refreshments, a raffle and other fun stuff (you can think of those as
the cotton candy, souvenirs and clowns of The Digital Juice Circus).
In our first ring--Network with other like-minded creatives from Boston.
Swap war-stories, share tips, pawn off employment possibilities. The
possibilities are endless as you mix and mingle with Photoshop jugglers,
HTML acrobats and fire-eating Creative Directors.
In our second ring--Ringmaster Diana Musto from Apple Computer will present
the always-exciting MacWorld round-up. If you couldn't make it to New York
to visit MacWorld or hear the MacWorld Keynote Address by Steve Jobs, then
this amazing specatacle is not to be missed. Watch in astonishment as
elegant hardware and software products jump through hoops of fire!
And finally, in our third ring--Tim Plummer the Magnificent from Adobe
Systems will wow you with his illusions and digital magic. And unlike most
magicians at other circuses, Tim will tell you his secrets while making
lucky Digital Juice attendees famous using nothing more than Premier,
GoLive, and LiveMotion. Yes, that's right--watch in surprise as Tim captures
video of our big top audience, edits it together, throws it into a Web site
blindfolded, and posts it all to an OS X Server. All in under an hour! Do
not try this daring feat at home without knowing all of the tricks of Tim's
trade.
Last, but certainly not least, The Digital Juice Circus will be raffling off
books from New Riders, software from Adobe, classes from UDA and more--so
don't do your disappearing act early or forget your business cards!
Space is limited. To RSVP, go to http://www.uda.com/digitaljuice

Dear Colleagues,
As you may have heard, TechFoundation is working very hard on its new
TechMarketplace initiative, which is our effort to help nonprofits acquire
the tech products and services they need to achieve their social missions. I
would like to take TechMarketplace's director, the esteemed Dan Fata, on
some site visits to local nonprofits. My goal is to acquaint him with their
IT infrastructures, and to give nonprofessionals an opportunity not just to
tell us but also to show us where the gaps are.
If you'd like to invite us over for a tour of your IT infrastructure, please
email me at your convenience.
I should also add that we are also scouting for potential Geeks For America
sites in the Boston area - so if you are interested in that agenda item as
well, please be sure to let me know.

Hello everyone,
For those of you running IIS on an NT or Win2000 server, it would
be a good idea to take a look at the following links. The first is an
article detailing the .ida "Code Red" Worm, which hit the White
House web server, and many, many, more NT based web servers.
It took ours out yesterday for several hours, and also part of this
morning. The second link is the patch on Microsoft's website.
Even if you don't think you have been infected, it would be a good
idea to install the patch anyway. Again, this only affects
NT4.0/Win2000 servers running Internet Information Server.

Dear Colleagues,
I just want to put in a plug for TecsChange
(http://www.tecschange.org/donation-faq.html) in Roxbury, MA.
Many nonprofit executives tell me that donors come to them with older PCs
that they'd like to give away. It so happens that many nonprofits don't
accept donated computers, and so the opportunity to put the equipment to
good use is lost. Fortunately, in Massachusetts, you can redirect the
donors to TecsChange.
Of course, not all members of this list based in Massachusetts. If you know
of a good nonprofit computer recycling organization in your area, please
feel free to post its name and contact information here.

The best resource I've seen for recycled computers is TechSoup:
http://www.techsoup.org/resourcelist.cfm?resourcelistid=10
Although it's intended to be a list of places where nonprofits can get
recycled computers, my guess is that most of the organizations also accept
computers to be recycled.

CITY OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS
Office of the Mayor
Thomas M. Menino
For Immediate Release:
July 20, 2001
For More Information Contact
Mayor's Press Office: (617) 635-4461
Mayor Menino Announces
Upcoming Technology Gala
Imark Communications, a worldwide event and media specialist company
showcases Boston's technology initiatives
Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced that Imark Communications, a
worldwide event and media specialist, selected Boston as their first site to
host "The Evening on the Bridge," an elaborate technology celebration
planned for September 12 at Franklin Park. Imark Communications touts Mayor
Menino's emergent technology initiatives and his national recognition for
improving and enhancing technology to address the digital divide.
"The driving force behind what we do here in Boston is because in my
heart I want our residents to have the opportunity to compete and succeed in
the 21st century," said Mayor Menino. "That's why we started innovative
programs like Technology Goes Home and TechBoston to give our residents a
state-of-the-art education and to motivate students and parents to continue
to develop high-tech skills. I believe all of programs are special and have
been very beneficial. I am happy when I get letters from graduates telling
me how beneficial the programs have been and what effect its had on their
lives. We have worked hard on these achievements and now we have to come
together to celebrate the success and accomplishments of our students and
families."
Concerned by the growing disparities in access to technology between the
urban and suburban, Mayor Menino initiated many programs to increase access
to technology and promote accessibility of information. The Mayor has
received national and local recognition for improving technology
initiatives.
Technology Goes Home is one of several technology initiatives Mayor Menino
initiated to address the digital divide. Technology Goes Home's goal is to
develop an effective program to select and train low-income families in a
manner that encourages enhanced employment opportunities for adults,
improved academic performance for children, community collaboration and
cooperation, and creation of Internet communities within and between
neighborhoods.
Through Technology Goes Home, more than 250 families has received a new
computer, printer, software and access to the Internet, courtesy of
Roxbury-based HiQ Computer.
In 1996, Mayor Menino launched Kids Compute 2001, a public-private
partnership to provide Boston's 130 schools with one computer for every four
students and one computer for every teacher. "This commitment was not a
reasonable task," admits Mayor Menino. "When I took this stance, I was not
aware of the shocking numbers. The computer-to-student ratio for the Boston
public schools then was 1:63, but today the numbers speak for themselves."
To date, Boston has one computer for every six students and more than 80
percent of Boston Public School teachers have completed at least 50 hours of
technology training.
Mayor Menino also sent a special to thanks to a selective group of
individuals who have agreed to sit on the planning committee for "The
Evening On The Bridge" event. The Event Committee consists of more sixty
members to date, including Joyce Plotkin, President of Massachusetts
Software & Internet Council (Co-Chair); Deborah Jackson, Vice President for
Programs at The Boston Foundation (Co-Chair); Paul Guzzi, President, Greater
Boston Chamber of Commerce; Robert Mudge, President, Massachusetts Verizon
Communications; Dr. Charles Vest, President, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology; and Paul Guzzi, President, Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.
"The Evening On The Bridge" event will be a night of festivities to
spotlight participating families and students in their efforts to gain
employment in the digital economy. The event will also be a night of
celebration for all the business, government, institutions, community-based
organizations, families and students who have been involved in collaborative
efforts in technology education.
Founded in 1999, The Boston Digital Bridge Foundation's mission is to bring
together multiple parties who are working together to leverage digital
opportunities, and to create and support a highly trained and skilled
workforce that will benefit families and businesses throughout the Boston
metropolitan area. Supported through the Mayor's office, the Foundation
provides access to technology for hundreds of Boston's youth and adults
through the Boston Public Schools and community organizations. Its programs
include: Technology Goes Home, which brings empowering technology into
low-income households; TechBoston, aimed at helping students prepare for
technology-based employment opportunities; and Technology Academy, a
state-of-the-art technology training facility that facilitates communication
and learning among program participants.
Imark and the Boston Digital Bridge Foundation began their partnership
earlier this year with the inaugural Massachusetts Technology Showcase. The
Evening on the Bridge will coincide with the Showcase, which will be held on
September 12-13 at the World Trade Center. Boston Digital Bridge Foundation
is the Premier Not-For-Profit Sponsor of the Massachusetts Technology
Showcase, the area's largest regionally-focused, business to business
information technology event

I am helping to recruit for a development associate at a local non-profit
where Raiser's Edge is used as the fundraising database. One candidate has
spoken about her experience with Paradigm (not Paradox) "a fundraising and
contact management software."
If you are familiar with Paradigm and Raiser's Edge, would you be so kind as
to comment on the transferability of skills from one to the other for routine
data management and reporting responsibilities? Would an individual with
Paradigm experience be able to "hit the ground running" in a Raiser's Edge
environment?
Thank you.

I am, for better or worse, quite familiar with both Paradigm and
Raiser's Edge, having several clients that use each.
A person who has used either could fairly quickly learn to use the
basic features of the other. Entering data, processing gifts, printing
canned reports is all fairly straightforward in both systems,
especially for someone who understands the operations of a
development office (as your candidate surely does).
That said, you can really get into difficulty with Raiser's Edge's
highly complex coding and reporting system. I would NOT have a
new user adding and changing codes until that person is fully
trained. I would also expect some serious difficulty in learning to
run reports, as even experienced users have this problem!
If your Raiser's Edge system is well documented and has no
existing problems, the transition will be easy. If the system is
already kind of messed up, it'll take a longer while for the new
person to get up to speed.
Please excuse the following if it seems an overly commercial
interruption; I offer it in the spirit of helping. One of the people in
my company (we provide technical support, services and
consulting to nonprofits in Massachusetts) knows Raiser's Edge
inside out. If your client needs some help with training or other
issues, please give me a call.

Subject: All Interested in Digital Divide and Economic Issues
The Women's Educational and Industrial Union and the Virtually Wired
Educational Foundation request your assistance with our search for a
consultant for a technology environmental scan. Applications are due by
end of the work day on Friday, August 3, 2001.
Background:
Since 1995, Virtually Wired, a 501(c) (3) non-profit educational
foundation, has had as its mission to help disenfranchised people access
technology and technology training. Recently, Virtually Wired partnered
with WEIU in undertaking a deliberative planning process to develop and
implement an assessment of technology resources and skills required to
enable upward mobility through ladders of opportunity in the technology and
related fields.
The goal of the environmental scan is to improve access and career
advancement for minorities, women and the economically disadvantaged to
careers in, and enabled by, technology. Virtually Wired and WEIU are
seeking to understand industry trends, identify barriers to success in
employment, training and learning programs for low-income communities and
develop in-depth and concrete employer-sponsored connections. An
anticipated outcome from the scan is that the Virtually Wired Educational
Foundation will be better position to continue its mission of serving as an
effective entryway across the digital divide and into the information
age-based economy for low wage workers seeking to move into better paying
jobs. The Virtually Wired Technology Environmental Scan recognizes that
the promise of technology goes well beyond access to computers and improved
communication. The challenge is to ultimately build the technical skills
necessary and, at the same time, move individuals and their families
towards economic self-sufficiency.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide in identifying a
consultant for this important work. Feel free to share the attached
Request for Application with your networks. Questions or concerns regar
