Dear Colleagues,

This is a good MIMC event to attend, if you're interested in meeting and
greeting (and perhaps even recruiting as volunteers) cutting edge web
designers in the Boston area.

Unfortunately, it conflicts with a TechFoundation event - our TechNight for
nonprofit professionals in the social service sector. Life is full of hard
choices. ;-)

Best regards from Deborah

  MIMC Digital Juice
Sponsored by: Adobe Systems, Inc.
Presented by: MIMC and UDA (United Digital Artists)
---------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, July 24th * 6:30am - 9:00pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Apple Market Center, 28 State Street, 9th Floor, Boston, MA
Free Admission for MIMC Members and Non-members

This month's Digital Juice is a three-ring circus! Not lions and tigers and
bears (oh my!) but networking, cool hardware and hot software. Plus we'll
have refreshments, a raffle and other fun stuff (you can think of those as
the cotton candy, souvenirs and clowns of The Digital Juice Circus).

In our first ring--Network with other like-minded creatives from Boston.
Swap war-stories, share tips, pawn off employment possibilities. The
possibilities are endless as you mix and mingle with Photoshop jugglers,
HTML acrobats and fire-eating Creative Directors.

In our second ring--Ringmaster Diana Musto from Apple Computer will present
the always-exciting MacWorld round-up. If you couldn't make it to New York
to visit MacWorld or hear the MacWorld Keynote Address by Steve Jobs, then
this amazing specatacle is not to be missed. Watch in astonishment as
elegant hardware and software products jump through hoops of fire!

And finally, in our third ring--Tim Plummer the Magnificent from Adobe
Systems will wow you with his illusions and digital magic. And unlike most
magicians at other circuses, Tim will tell you his secrets while making
lucky Digital Juice attendees famous using nothing more than Premier,
GoLive, and LiveMotion. Yes, that's right--watch in surprise as Tim captures
video of our big top audience, edits it together, throws it into a Web site
blindfolded, and posts it all to an OS X Server. All in under an hour! Do
not try this daring feat at home without knowing all of the tricks of Tim's
trade.

Last, but certainly not least, The Digital Juice Circus will be raffling off
books from New Riders, software from Adobe, classes from UDA and more--so
don't do your disappearing act early or forget your business cards!

Space is limited. To RSVP, go to http://www.uda.com/digitaljuice

I was wondering if anyone had (and was willing to share) a strategic
technology plan for a school or department of social work? I have lots of
agency plans but am looking for what other schools of social work had done.

Subject: Geeks For America: Seeking Boston nonprofits to participate
finn@...
Send Email Send Email

Dear Colleagues,

We are seeking nonprofit organizations in the Boston area that are
interested in sponsoring our Geeks For America volunteers.

The Geeks for America program trains recent college graduates, who commit to
work for a nonprofit for one year, to address the organization's information
technology needs. Geeks are chosen for their educational and extracurricular
experience with technology, and their commitment to public service. The
program is piloting in the Boston area, with a goal of building a model
replicable on a national scale. Geeks will receive internships that are
supported in part by the participating nonprofits and subsidized through
corporate sponsorship and other philanthropic donations.

Nonprofit sponsors of a Geek from TechFoundation's Geeks for America Program
benefit from the following:

- Unique solution to the shortage of competent technical support
professionals;

- Tech support in both major office applications and basic networking
environments;

- On-going training keeps the Geek current with new applications, while
addressing any individual needs;

- Training and support services for the Geeks are paid for by th
Program;

- TechFoundation staff work with nonprofit sponsors to customize each
assignment to suit individual needs.

To sponsor a Geek from TechFoundation's Geeks for America Program your
organization must meet the following criteria:

- Hold 501(c) 3 status with a current letter of determination from the
IRS;

- Meet fundamental financial and administrative capacity criteria for
hosting a Geek as determined by TechFoundation;

- Contribute a portion of the Geek's compensation ($15,000 for a
12-month full FTE-- an additional $15,000, plus benefits, plus training is
paid by the program)

- Commit a supervisor with technical background and systems knowledge
to provide local management and support to the Geek;

- Allow the Geek to participate in continuing technical education on a
regular basis during the Geek's year placement;

- Commit to working with TechFoundation to evaluate the program in
process.

If you are interested in sponsoring a TechFoundation Geek at your nonprofit,
please contact us at geeks@... This is a limited opportunity
so please inquire promptly.

Many thanks and best regards from Deborah

Just a couple quick thoughts, Wayne and all. There is not an answer
waiting to be discovered. There is the potential for a process of
defining the data that can answer the question and finding a way to
extract that data from the activities/stakeholders involved.

I have worked with non-profit organizations for years. From my
experience, I find that the most
successfuly non-profit organizations operate with much of the same
organizational structures of a for-profit business organization.

Therefore, I would recommend that you look to measures of successful
business or government websites.

I wish to offer the following websites that have extensive information
on web and Internet metrics.

www.cio.com The website of the magazine for Information Executives

www.pti.org The website of Public Technology Inc., the leading
resource for cities and local government on-line.

www.morino.org Has extensive knowledge on impact of technology on society.

The book "Competing on Internet Time" offers extensive real world
business knowledge and experience on the
battle between Netscape and Microsoft in their efforts to dominate the
Internet.

I have found that the above resources give some of the best availabe
information on how to measure success in Internet efforts.

Wayne: I would imagine there are a number of ways to measure website
success, depending on the communication applications on the learning
community website (chat rooms, listservs, online courses, etc) and do these
applications reflect the mission of the organization. Our Maryland Society
for Clinical Social Work-Guild 49 site has all of these applications. if
your website has a hit counter, I think the number of returning "customers"
would be one way to determine success.

In the implementation of the Knowledge City at the University of São Paulo
(www.usp.br/iea/cidade) we are developing methodologies to do that.

A first attempt, in progress, is the creation of a group of professionals
from differentes areas: education, computer science, anthropology, economics
and sociology. We are using surveys with participants as well as
experts'views on the performance of the community.

Different aspects are at stake: from purely pedagogical issues related to
learning practices and cognitive development to scorecards used in the
evaluation of knowledge management and return on investments in "human
capital".

Dear Colleagues,

ONE/Northwest (a nonprofit in Seattle that provides information technology
assistance to environmental groups in their region) has just published an
outstanding electronic newsletter on the total cost of technology for
nonprofits. To see it, go to http://www.onenw.org/onelist/ and go to Volume
5, Issue 7. And while you're at it, check out their Activist Toolkit at
http://www.onenw.org/toolkit/. The latter contains everything from very
basic hardware recommendations to tips for electronic advocacy.

This is a terrific example of a group that, while working in a very specific
sector and region, is making a generous measure of its expertise available
through the internet to the entire nonprofit community.

Dear Colleagues,

Um. Just a little clarification, as requested:

The TechNights (July 23rd through July 26th, 6:00 - 8:00 pm) will be held at
TechFoundation headquarters near Harvard Square. Here are the directions:

Driving from Route 90 (Massachusetts Turnpike)

Follow Route 90 East toward Cambridge/Boston and take Exit 18
(Allston/Brighton/Cambridge)
After the tollbooth, stay right and follow the signs for Cambridge
Go straight through the lights and over the bridge
After you cross the bridge, take a left at the lights onto Memorial Drive
At the third set of lights, take a right onto J.F. Kennedy Street
Turn left at the next traffic light onto Eliot Street
At the next set of lights, bear left onto Bennett Street; the Charles Hotel
will be on your left
Just after the entrance to the Charles Hotel, turn left into the parking
garage
Immediately after you get your ticket from the machine, you will see an
elevator on your right marked "To Charles Square Offices." Once you have
parked your car take this elevator to the Lobby level
Exit from the elevator, turn right and then right again into the elevator
lobby
Take the elevator to the 4th floor, enter our lobby, and we will have a
person there to greet you.

Driving from Route 128 via Route 2

Take Route 128 Exit 29A to Route 2 East towards Arlington/Cambridge
At the end of Route 2 you will come to a fork and a set of traffic lights.
Bear right at the fork onto Alewife Brook Parkway
Go through two more traffic lights and then, at the first rotary, go 3/4 of
the way around (the equivalent of a left turn)
At the next rotary, bear right
Continue on through three sets of lights, crossing Huron Avenue, Brattle
Street, and Mt. Auburn Street, and then bear left at the next lights and
turn onto Memorial Drive
Turn left at the next light onto J.F.

From Route 93:

Take exit 26 - Storrow Drive
Stay on Storrow Drive for just over 4 miles and then bear right at the
Harvard Square/Cambridge exit
Take a right at the traffic light, go over the bridge, and continue straight
ahead through the next traffic light. You are now on J.F.

Deborah, Linda, Rachel and fellow list serve members;
Very interesting and provocative, in the sense of some interesting
internal reactions. Obviously, there are issues that make this a hot
topic for women in technology for nonprofits. Mutual support around
such issues is critical. I am interested in hearing the issues and the
discussion, dealing with how I contribute to the issues, and offering
my perspective in a supportive way as well.
(I certainly do feel 'discouraged' from participation when I read "we
hope only women and girls will sign up." I guess I will only sign up
if the woman in me insists.)

Anyway, for some reason I fear that such a group would draw away
valuable female NTAP input and dialogue from these other list serves.
At the same time, I applaud any effort to provide forums for
supportive discussions of the problems and issues women (and men) face
as a result of archetypal presumptions and prejudices. Best of luck
and returns on your efforts.

Last fall my organization, the Massachusetts Council of Human Service

thought it was very well run and we are pleased to be co-sponsoring it
again. We also have a link to the Career Fair on our website at

In addition, for those looking for a position in IT or something similar, we
have a job database that we launched earlier this year on our website. Our
member agencies, consisting of nearly 300 human service providers and
nonprofits in Massachusetts, have been posting a variety of jobs on the
site, many for technical assistance. New job opportunities are posted
frequently. If you would like to post a job, please look at our membership

Hi Everyone-

I am sitting at the autoshop waiting for my car to be fixed. Apparently I
have a computer chip inside that is not informing the mechanic what the
problem is. Since I have all this time will summarize the discussion at the
second breakout session on women in technology.

Basically we decided to start another email list. Most of the women, maybe
all of the women, agreed that we need a place for women in, interested,
working or dabbling in technology in the non-profit sector to commiserate,
talk, network and share ideas.

How the email list is defined will take place on the email list. The name
of the list is WIN-TAP otherwise known as Women in Non profits, Technology
Assistance Providers.

The list will be up by the end of this day and I will have a site for
everyone to sign up. We will hope that only women and girls will sign up.
We are not discouraging men but are not strongly encouraging them to sign
up.

As for the other women who attended the breakout session, please chime in.

Thanks

Subject: [Riders] what's up with tech women

Hi to everyone,

I thought I would post some notes about what happened with the group of
women who met
to discuss women in the circuit rider community during the conference last
weekend.

Because of some scheduling conflicts, there ended up being two separate
meetings.
The first one was over lunch: about 15 or 20 women divided into 3 different
tables and
had an informal discussion of our interests.
The second one was later that afternoon in a conference room in one large
group.

I attended the lunch discussion, but could not attend the second meeting
because
another meeting of circuit riders working with nonprofits involved in social
justice
work took place at the same time. I so much wished that I could be in two
places at
once.
I heard that it was a great meeting!
And, I believe someone who was there will be posting the notes from that
second
meeting to the Riders list serve.

I want to go ahead an post some notes from my particular table from the
lunch meeting
because I thought people might be interested in that, even though the
discussions in
the second meeting may have been able to go into greater depth.

Issues & ideas that came up at our table's discussion:
1. Interest in regional meetings of women circuit riders.
2. Hooking into non-circuit rider/non-nonprofit women tech communities (such
as groups
like http://www.dcwebwomen.org/ and http://www.digitaleve.org/).
3. Communicating with women doing technology work as staff members of
particular
nonprofit organizations who might not consider themselves circuit riders
(e.g., the
default techie at a nonprofit organization) and offering them support in
some way.
4. Working with educating young girls about the possibility of becoming
techies in the
nonprofit sector; and/or the possibility of developing women circuit rider
mentoring
programs. Also supporting women of any age who have interest in entering
this field.
5. Letting male circuit riders know about ways they can help engender
clients' respect
for their female circuit rider colleagues.
6. Ensuring that, when training female staff at nonprofit organizations in
software or
other technology, circuit riders are aware of issues around cultural
stereotypes of
women and technology so that their training methods can take this into
account (i.e.,
build confidence of trainees/trust relationship with trainees).
7. The possibility of creating a separate list serve or online group of
women circuit
riders; or the possibility of creating strong voices/communities of women
circuit
riders within the Riders list serve and perhaps some of the women techie
groups (see
examples above) that do not specifically focus on nonprofits.
8. The possibility of creating regional meetings and/or list serves or
online
communities of women techies working in nonprofits whether they be circuit
riders or
default techies on staff; helping these women connect with each other and
share
knowledge and resources.

I must say that I am extremely interested in how we might be able to develop
support
systems for women staff at nonprofits doing technology work. Actually, I'm
really
interested in every single idea that came up, so I'm excited to hear about
what
happened in the second meeting to see if there were particular things people
are most
interested in focusing on.

It was such a great great pleasure to meet all the women I spoke with at the
conference; can't wait to work with you and the women who couldn't make it
to Denver
on all this and more.

rock on Divas!

You might want to give the Yahoo Store service a look. They use technology
developed by ViaWeb, and I developed multiple order forms with credit card
processing. No HTML knowledge necessary. (I know longer use the service
because I don't need multiple order functionality. I have no financial
interest in the service.) They're at http://store.yahoo.com. Good luck.

Our small non-profit organization runs on an iMac. Essentially I'm
the entire staff and my technical expertise is weak.

Our web site is hosted by O.L.M. We have been using a service named
Anacom as an ASP to handle order form construction (web-based) and
   credit card processing.

Anacom has today, essentially abandoned this type of business and
told us to find a new "payment gateway provider." They even suggested
four different organizations that were willing to take over that
   function.

However, the problem is order form construction and processing. We
need three or four separate order forms with the ability to update
each one monthly--and then to have the actual orders taken,
   processed, credit cleared, etc.

As of now, we are completely unable to take orders, with or without
   credit cards.

I'm reluctant to try the MIVA shopping cart system offered by our web
host simply because, as of now, I know absolutely nothing about it
and do not have a reliable advisor to help.

What are my options and are there any good suppliers who can take
   over the process for us?

Dear Colleague,

Greetings from the http://www.DigitalGovernance.org Community.

Apologies for cross-postings, but this email is being sent to you knowing of
your possible interest in the area of Goverance in the South.

There is an increasing momentum toward the use of Information and
Communication Technologies in areas relating to Governance in the South.
This new tool further empowers the civil society to play a significant role
in influencing decisions which affect them directly.

Example of use of ICT in Good Governance in Brazil, Kenya, Zimbabwe, India,
Burma, Bangladesh, Philippines, Malaysia, Pakistan, etc substantiates this.

The website Digital Governance at http://www.digitalgovernance.org explores
some of the Innovative Models that put electronic-forms of Governance into
practice. These generic models have a huge potential to change the political
scenes, reshape democracy and transfrom the way citizens interact with the
Government. The website provides description of these models and the various
programmes based on these models, along with relevant electronic-governance
case-studies, articles and publications, and upcoming events.

You may subscribe to more updates of Digital Governance by sending a blank
email to digitalgovernance-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

I welcome your Feedforward, suggestions, intellectual contributions and
practical experiences to enrich this initiative and also on areas of mutual
synergy.

Warm Regards,
Vikas Nath
