Dear Pat,

I use two approaches. First, this javascript:
<script language=javascript>

<!--
// This Script was made with ASS Maker 3.1 (c)2000-2001 A.Madeira
// http://assmaker.50megs.com/index.html
function Contact0() {
var tag1 = "mail";
var tag2 = "to:";
var at = "@";
var email1 = "%20robert";
var email2 = "rlweiner";
var email3 = ".com";
var subject = "";
var cc = "";
var bcc = "";
var body = "";
var ass = tag1 + tag2 + email1 + at + email2 + email3;
window.location = ass;
}
//-->
</script>

Here's how I call it:
<a href="JavaScript:Contact0()" onMouseOver = "imgAct('img2')" onMouseOut =
"imgInact('img2')"><img src="images/contact_us.gif" alt="Contact Us"
width="160" height="27" border="0" name="img2"></a>

Second, I translated my email address into HTML code so I can display it on
my web site as plain text without any telltale @'s or .coms appearing. This
free tool will do the translation:

Does anyone know what the script is to protect e-mail addresses on your
website? I think it's a java script that protects your e-mail address from
being harvested for spamming. ANy assistance you could give me would be
appreciated. Thanks

Dear Pat

http://www.jracademy.com/~jtucek/email/download.php

There is a java-script code who encrypt your emails into numbers and now your
email address should be safe from SpamBots (computer programs that crawl the net
looking for email addresses).

Most SpamBots look for the give-away 'mailto:blah@...' link, and more
complicated ones look for '@' symbols.
With this script in your page, there's not a single 'mailto' or '@'. As far as
the bots are concerned, it's just a bunch of meaningless numbers. This should
help keep your email address off of future bulk email lists.

Deborah,

Well, I see you posting on RIDERS lists from time to time...
http://npogroups.org/lists/lists

Besides those lists and yours (this list, InfoSysForum), the other list
I currently subscribe to is 'orgwebmasters' --
http://www.discussionpro.com/orgwebmasters/ -- it's obviously focused
on webmastering at non-profit orgs.

I will say that these three lists seem to share many of the same members
(and because of that, many of the same questions/topics are
cross-posted).

Anyone have any favorite bulletin boards (web-based forums) or RSS feeds
to add to this list?

Best,

Chris

I'd be interested in hearing about other email distribution lists that
are helpful to you. Are there other forums on the nonprofit sector or
on information technology (or both) that really address the challenges

Hello to all,

I recently started volunteering as part of a Volunteer Coordinating
group for a non-profit. We need a database that'll help us organize,
track, and manage our volunteers. Now, I know of VolunteerWorks, but I
have 2 issues with that option: 1) the budget might not allow for that
and 2)we have only about 100 (active) volunteers right now. Should we
go ahead and invest in VolunteerWorks (which even though is great has
some major quirks) or does anyone know of a less expensive (or free)
volunteer management alternative?

Thanks to all in advance.

Dear Deborah,

I subscribe to a variety of discussion forums related to the areas in which
I consult: fundraising, nonprofit management, the arts, and the general use
of technology for "Advancement". Many of them are hosted by CharityChannel
and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

Also, like many members of this group, I'm on several NTEN and Circuit Rider

Dear Deborah,

Apart from this one:

- Minority http://lists.nici-mc2.org/mailman/listinfo/minority
A very new list managed by Bonnie Bracey:
"On the anniversary of Brown vs the Board of Education, we are initiating a
listserv to share contacts, interesting articles about minorities, and to
promote equity. Sometimes I am not sure that when I post the articles to
other lists .. that the right audience is getting them. So I share this
place with you for thinking, discussing, sharing and so on. You don't have
to be a minority to be a part of this list.
We are about problem solving. There are many minorites who have a vested
interest in having their children do better. I will also provide teacher
opportunities, workshops and funding opportunities when they are passed to
me. You may not be interested, but perhaps you have friends who need to
think out loud to an audience with similar concerns. There may be some items
you can share or post that would be of service to list members."

- Net-Gold http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Net-Gold/ :
"NetGold is a DISCUSSION group with a specific purpose: sharing by its
members of important, informative and useful Internet and sometimes other
resources for learning and improvement of skills. That which is shared may
be web pages, documents or reports found on the web, and internet tools that
make using the internet or that make life activities easier or richer. Of
particular interest are websites that contribute to academic growth, life
skills enhancement and leisure time value. The information shared should be
suitable for Family Life and include suitability for at least adolescent
level perusal. Enjoy,
Don Leon, List Owner
David P. Dillard, Owner"

- WWWEDU, The Web and Education Discussion Group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wwwedu
http://www.edwebproject.org/wwwedu.html

"WWWEDU is a moderated list sponsored by Andy Carvin at the Benton
Foundation. The purpose of WWWEDU is to offer educators, webmasters and
policy makers a continuous discussion on the potential of World-Wide Web use
in education. The Web is increasingly becoming an ideal environment for
teaching students of all ages. A well-conceived Web site can inspire
creativity and interactivity, yet it is still too new of an environment for
us to completely grasp its potential. What are teachers and students doing
with the Web today? How can the structure of the Web positively affect
learning and assessment? What else can be done to expand the Web's role in
education? And how can we encourage non-Web using schools and educators to
take advantage of this new tool? WWWEDU will hopefully provide a forum for
these questions and others as they come up."

- DigitalDivide http://owa.benton.org/archives/digitaldivide.html (archives
only) See also http://www.digitaldividenetwork.org, of which DigitalDivide
is one mailing-ist.

- Babel http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Babel/

"This is the discussion list for towerofbabel.com: The multilingual,
multicultural online journal and community of arts and ideas. This list is
inspired by that scene in Fahrenheit 451, where the elders sit around
campfires passing down to others the information and wisdom of the books
they've each memorized. Subscribe to this list and discuss anything which
deals with the world of arts and ideas, languages and linguistic issues,
world affairs, or cultural trivia (because trivia is the molecular level of
history). Any member may post in any language. Updates of when new content
and new translations are posted on the site are also sent to the list. "
Great list and great site (www.towerofbabel.com ). Careful though: members
post a lot, in rich text, at times with big whacking attachments. Better not
if you only have a hotmail account and no connection of your own.

Help!

Have been using Norton Internet Security 2004 with anti virus, firewall and
anti spam (though found the Anti Spam a bit useless but maybe I should have
persevered).

When I installed it I set it to automatically update new definitions etc..
- but to my horror I have just realised it has not been doing it for I
don't know how long. So I took this setting off, and then re-applied it,
but it still doesn't seem to be working.

I'm totally disappointed as up until now I have found it much better than
Norton Anti Virus 2003 which crashed my system, stopped Windows 98 from
shutting down, and .... to the extend that I couldn't find the solutions on
their web site and had to pay for (totally useless) phone support.

I stuck with Norton as the reviews were good for 2004 - but this is now a
real worry.

Any ideas how to make it start automatically updating again - hopefully
without totally un-installing and re-installing?

Thanks in advance.

Hello.

I want to mention that Up & Running, the freely distributed database
offered by the Fund for the City of New York, is capable of tracking
volunteer related information. The Interactions in Up & Running can be
set-up to track any type of information pertaining to a contact, and
that includes volunteers.

I know I have been in contact with you regarding Up & Running, but I did
not mention that our demo data includes some sample volunteer data,
including a volunteer profile that includes skills and avaiability. To
take a look, select a member and then add the Interaction, Volunteer
Profile. Of course, you could modify any of the sample custom
Interaction tables, or create your own to reflect the information that
you would need to track about your volunteers.

To take a look at Up & Running, please visit:

I hope that helps.

Try manually updating the software version and virus definitions and then
running liveupdate. Do you have any peculiar way of accessing the Internet
(like through a proxy server or something)? I don't remember where you can
get their software updates, but here's where you can manually download virus
definitions for Norton AV:

-----------------------------------------------------------

My (very limited—had a demo this morning) impression is that
the ETO application is a good client tracking, case
management, volunteers management, and outcomes tracking &
reporting application.

- While it could be used for donor tracking and fundraising,
it's not really recommended.

It appears to be very user-friendly and flexible (average
training time is 45 minutes!).

A key drawback is that it can only import Excel data, and
then, only "demographic" data (which is a very defined set
of data)… meaning that data must be manually entered for the
most part.

- Going in the other direction, it will export to Word,
Excel, SPSS, etc.

Phone support is available from 8am-8pm, M-F (not sure, but
believe that's Eastern time).

Updates are done approx. every 6 weeks, and sent out
automatically, i.e. no cost.

There is a program for update. Have you checked to see if your firewall will
allow it access to the internet?

Can you run a manual update? It will ask for permission to access the
internet and you can allow access which may open the auto update.

I have had trouble in this area many times. What I would suggest:
1. Uninstall Norton Internet Security 2004.
2. Uninstall LiveUpdate.
3. Reinstall Norton Internet Security 2004.

I have had to call Norton in the past and had to pay the $39.95 fee to learn
this little trick. This is pretty much what they told me to do. Fact is
everytime I install a new version of Norton on any computer that has had it
before, I will uninstall the LiveUpdate and then install the latest version
of Norton Software.

NEED VOLUNTEERS?
DOES YOUR ORGANIZATION NEED MENTORING?
Cisco is pleased to announce the launch of our new Volunteer
Connection System. As an Internet company, Cisco is excited
to be leveraging online technology to bring community
volunteering opportunities to nonprofits
and our employees in an accessible, web-based application.
This new volunteer connection system matches individual
employees and employee teams to philanthropic opportunities
in their community. In addition, it
will also match the skills and experience our employees have
with nonprofit organizations that are seeking specific
expertise for themselves or their constituents.

We welcome "virtual" opportunities for those who may not be
located near a large Cisco office (our large offices are
located in the San Jose/San Francisco Bay Area, Greater
Dallas Area, Raleigh, New York City, Boxborough and Herndon
V.A.)

Examples of common "virtual" requests include: reviewing
written material such as a brochure or content for a website
on-line; helping with the development of a business strategy
over the phone; technical trouble shooting.

You are welcome to register your organization in our system:
http://cisco.cybergrants.com/sgrquiz

Once you're in the application, you may request Cisco
volunteers for your specific initiatives. (If an appropriate
volunteer is matched at some point, you will be notified by
email with instructions on how to
proceed). We welcome one-time events as well as on-going
opportunities. We hope this system will give your
organization access to more volunteers and will save you
time in recruiting, tracking, managing and communicating
with those volunteers.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please send them
to Barbara Jones at bajones@....

Before re-installing Norton Anti-Virus, you might try this. Go to
www.sarc.com and search for a document that contains the phrase LU1814
(an error message). It describes how some worms cleverly block access
to the Symantec domain, thus preventing LiveUpdate from working.

The solution is to find all instances of a file called "hosts" on your
computer, remove any references to liveupdate" or "symantec," and then
save the file.

Dear Colleagues,

Last week I was at a really interesting nonprofit gathering
hosted by the Bridgestar group. The Sarbanes-Oxley
legislation was a very hot topic, and there was a lot of
discussion about how it will affect the nonprofit sector.

So my questions to the members of this group who are located
in the USA. are: 1) Is the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation under
discussion in your organization(s), and 2) will it affect
the way we do nonprofit technology?

Best regards from Deborah

Hi Peter,

So you're having trouble with spam. You get lots of messages you don't
want, and also lots of non-deliverable reports (NDRs). You want to know
how to stop them and you're concerned that someone is abusing your email
address.

Stopping spam

You cannot stop spam but you can divert it. There are a number of good,
free spam filters out there which you may find useful. I use the email
program built into Mozilla, which is free software. I am very satisfied
with it.
http://www.mozilla.org/

When I used Outlook I relied on a program called Ella to help me sort
spam out of my inbox. I can't say enough good things about this program.
It is free but adds an advertisement to the bottom of each message you
send. If you pay the registration fee the ad goes away.
http://www.openfieldsoftware.com/

NDRs

These messages that appear to be reporting undeliverable email also
cannot be stopped, but they can be diverted. If you use spam filtering
software, you can mark these messages as spam (that's what I do). Then
they will be filtered into your spam folder.

Abuse of email address

The NDRs you are receiving could be the result of a virus on someone
else's computer, which is sending mail that appears to come from your
email address. When some of the messages cannot be delivered, the
recipients' mail servers reply to the apparent sender: you. There is
nothing you can do to stop this.

The NDRs may also be messages directly sent by a virus. They may even
contain a virus in them. Good, up-to-date antivirus software will help
protect you from viruses, but will not stop the message.

They may also be the result of spam being sent so it appears to come
from your address. This is unlikely but possible. If this is the case
there is nothing you can do to stop it.

In some cases the non-deliverable reports may actually be spam
themselves, disguised as an error message in an attempt to trick you
into opening the message. Again, spam filtering will help you here.

Best of luck with your unwanted email. I hope this message is helpful.

Yours,

Zac

Hi Everyone -

Again, please let me know if anyone has any thoughts on Exceed Premier (before I
buy it)! Thanks.

Also, I need some IT assistance - the parish I am affiliated with has great
computers but they are not networked. Can anyone point me to a resource that
would be helpful with this?

Thanks!

Hi Michelle,

Here's a great starting point:

The articles cover a lot of ground. I'm all the way up to learning
about VPN's.

Dear Michelle,

Joel's advice is excellent, and I'm also cross-posting your
query to the Northeast Circuit Riders. That's the Boston
area group of nonprofit tech consultants. It's good to
connect with the local talent!

Dear Colleagues,

A thousand thanks go out to Sheldon Mains to this grant
alert!

I have met some of the folks from the Beaumont Foundation
and like them a lot. In fact, I am an Official Fan* of one
of their senior program officers, David Geilhufe.

Just my opinion: The Beaumont Foundation's granting program
is noteworthy in two important ways. The first is that they
are giving their grantees Toshiba hardware - but without
licenses (for operating systems, applications, or
networking) or staff training. If your organization already
has the software and the skills, this is a great opportunity.

The other really interesting characteristic of the Beaumont
Foundation is that it was created from the vision of some
very smart attorneys, who wanted to do something innovative
with the unclaimed settlement monies from the lawsuit
mentioned in the original message. So they weren't really
thinking about technology first - they were thinking of
social/legal innovation.

Beaumont Foundation of America has announced it's 2004
Community Grants program. This year programs in Beaumont's
"B Group" states are eligible (see below). While the grant
criteria seems quite a bit more restrictive
than in the 2003 "A Group" states, it is still a source that
eligible nonprofits should consider.

Funding for this program is from a class action lawsuit
against Toshiba, the program provides Toshiba equipment to
eligible organizations.

Deadlines are June 30 for Boys and Girls Clubs and Salvation
Army organizations, July 30 for others:

..............................
From the foundation website:

"The following areas have been identified for potential CIPP
placements:

Affordable Housing
Children's Hospitals
Children of Fallen Heroes
College and University Scholarship Programs
Faith-Based Initiatives
Foster Care and Mentoring Programs for Children
Homeless Persons
Persons with Disabilities
Restart Programs for Released Offenders
Senior Citizens
Additionally, the Foundation plans to continue grants to our
national alliance partners, the Salvation Army and Boys &
Girls Clubs of America.

Group B states include Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut,
Delaware, Florida,
Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine,
Maryland, Massachusetts,
Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New
Jersey, North
Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South
Carolina,
Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin."

Noncommercial computer refurbishers (NCRs) now have their own online
discussion group. "CompuMentor is particularly interested in getting
your views on standards (warranty, fail rate, disposal, and data
removal) as we prepare for the NCR conference in Chicago in mid
September. We intend, however, that this will be an ongoing service
to allow the people in our community to ask questions, express
opinions, and raise issues."

To subscribe: email a one-line message to
majordomo@...

that says:

subscribe refurbishers.

"No need to have a subject for this message. The Majordomo software
that runs this listserv only processes commands in the message body.
If the subscription is successful you should receive an email asking
you to confirm the subscription. We have it set up like this to keep
out spammers."

After you subscribe, if you want messages to come bundled in one
email message at the end of each day, email a one-line message to
majordomo@... that says:

To unsubscribe: email a one-line message to

Subject: recommended web/email provider?
jodmarch
Send Email Send Email

I provide informal support for several small peace and justice
non-profits in St. Louis. One of these groups, the National Farm Worker
Ministry (NFWM), has been trying to run some emailing lists using
majordomo; they have had a number of problems with their web host /
email provider (bad support, corrupted configuration files) and have
decided to move to another provider.

I would appreciate any recommendations for a new web / email host for
them.

NFWM would like to find a company that would host their web site, and
which would also permit them to send outgoing email lists (their lists
contain 1300 names, growing slowly).

They have 5 offices around the country, all of which would be sending
and receiving email, possibly by the hundreds, though only the St.
Louis office would be sending email by the thousands. They are not
committed to using majordomo, have considered just using outlook to
send their emailings.

Personally I user pair.com as my web host and for incoming email, and
am very satisfied with them (cheap, reliable, excellent support). But
pair.com does not permit large volumes of outgoing email, and does not
support authenticated SMTP, which I understand helps to prevent
outgoing emails being flagged as spam.

Perhaps NFWM could use pair.com for web and incoming email, and use
another provider for outgoing email. In theory, each office could use
their dialup or DSL provider to send emails, but they would like to
have a consistent procedure between offices. Another option would be
for them to use a service like Mailshell.com, which for $30 / year
provides authenticated SMTP (as well as incoming spam screening).

Thoughts?

Many thanks,
Jonathan March
