Yes, IntelliWebSearch is a compiled macro, but over the years it has
become a surprisingly complex macro. Although its basic function is
actually very simple, it takes at least two hours to explain its
intricacies.

In reality no one has ever paid the full training price because everyone
enrols during the discount period (€63.00), and some translators'
associations have negotiated even lower prices with me.

Note too that only one of the two training events is exclusively about
IntelliWebSearch. "IntelliWebSearching - Optimal Internet Search
Techniques for Translators" was actually born from an old seminar I used
to give in Italy before IntelliWebSearch existed. In it I explain
terminology search techniques that you can actually use without
IntelliWebSearch. Although it would be silly not to "automate" them
using the tool.

Imagine you consider IntelliWebSearch to be worth €20, and you enrol in
a training event through your association at €56 (if your association
doesn't have an agreement with me, bully them into contacting me). In
effect you are paying only €36 for training on IntelliWebSearch _and_
web search techniques. That's €18 an hour. And you get points in the
association's continuing education programme to boot.

In any case, one of the results emerging from the survey (see
IntelliWebSearch homepage) is that there are users who would like to
donate something, but who are not interested in the training. As a
consequence I will shortly be launching a voluntary registration
campaign. IntelliWebSearch will continue to be freeware, but satisfied
users may pay a voluntary registration fee to become registered users.

*IntelliWebSearching - Optimal Internet Search Techniques for Translators*
Tuesday 15 December 2009

This on-line training session consists of three parts.
The first part deals with basic search engine features and functions
such as the default operator, phrase search, truncation, stop words,
Boolean operators, fields, sorting, advanced search options and
keywords. It is probably mainly revision for most attendees, but it is
essential that everyone is familiar with the basic concepts before
continuing.
The second part explains what IntelliWebSearch does and how it can be
used to speed up and simplify terminology searches in the Internet.
The third part looks at the typical problems translators and
interpreters have to face during their working day, such as searching
for useful on-line dictionaries (mono/bilingual), multilingual sites
(parallel texts), single terms, abbreviations/acronyms,
quotations/titles and idioms/boilerplate, and explains how
IntelliWebSearch can be used to save standard settings and perform
appropriate searches literally at the press of a button (keyboard shortcut).

*IntelliWebSearch Tweaking - Customizing Searches and Settings*
Wednesday 16 December 2009

This on-line training session consists of three parts.
The first part explains what IntelliWebSearch does and how it can be
used to speed up and simplify terminology searches in the Internet and
in local dictionaries.
The second part looks at how to add settings for on-line resources using
the Wizard (both methods) and manually (GET method only), and how to add
settings for simple local dictionaries. It also looks at how to add
settings for some more difficult sites (Form Fill mode) and the options
on the Search Settings and Edit windows.
The third part gives a broad overview of the program settings and a few
tweaking hints.

For more details and enrolment, see
http://www.intelliwebsearch.com/training.html.

** Special Discount **
If you enrol early (by 11 December) there is a 10% discount. Feel free
to let any colleagues you think might be interested know about these
events.

Dear all,
I thought you might be interested to know there are still places

-------- Original Message  --------

*Déjà Vu X Professional On-Line Training Package*

Why is it called a training package?
Because it is not just a presentation of the tool. The package consists
of an on-line seminar that lasts a full *four and a half hours* and
provides a broad overview of the uses and functions of Déjà Vu X
Professional with real examples. This is followed by a *thirty-minute
one-to-one tutoring session*, which allows trainees to clear up any
doubts that may emerge when they actually put the things they have
learnt into practice.

The training webinar is delivered live in English via a web conferencing
system with built-in VoIP. In other words, it is interactive like a real
seminar. Besides speakers/headphones, attendees should ideally have a
microphone so that they can ask questions. Due to its interactive
nature, enrolment is limited to a maximum of eight attendees.

The half-hour tutoring session is one-to-one, can be delivered in
English or Italian, and takes place within thirty days of the training
webinar. During the tutoring the trainer can see the trainee's screen
and offer guidance.

Obviously a broadband Internet connection is essential for reasonable
reception.

There will be a very short free on-line presentation of this package on
Tuesday 10 November at 9:30 UTC/GMT. Attendees will see how everything
works and hear a description of what the on-line training package covers.

Subject: Search String for Le Grand Dictionnaire
jmk140294

Send Email Send Email

Dear all,

In today's IWS online training session it was mentioned that there are
search strings missing for Le Grand Dictionnaire.

Here they are:

(Please note the comments _after_ the search strings.)

If you want to search for a FRENCH term in Le Grand Dictionnaire please use
the following string.

Label=LGD FR
Start=http://www.granddictionnaire.com/BTML/FRA/r_Motclef/index800_1.asp
Finish=@{Enter}
Description=Searching for a French term in Le Grand Dictionnaire using
Firefox/Slim Browser/Opera.
Notes=Functions erratically with Internet Explorer.
Quotes Off=Yes
Pluses Off=Yes
Encoding=UTF-8
Interword Separator=
Case=1

If you want to search for an ENGLISH term in Le Grand Dictionnaire please
use the following string.

Label=LGD EN
Start=http://www.granddictionnaire.com/btml/fra/r_motclef/index800_1.asp
Finish=+{Tab 2}{Up}{Tab 2}@{Enter}
Description=Searching for an English term in Le Grand Dictionnaire using
Firefox/Slim Browser/Opera.
Notes=Functions erratically with Internet Explorer.
Quotes Off=Yes
Pluses Off=Yes
Encoding=UTF-8
Interword Separator=
Case=1

For help regarding importing these search strings please see the
IWS Help Pages -> Search Settings > Import from clipboard

Please note:

I have checked these search strings using

Firefox 3.5.5
Slim Browser V4.12
Opera 10.01
Internet Explorer 8

The preferred browsers are Firefox and Slim Browser. Opera has shown some
erratic behaviour (will execute the search the first time, but not
follow-up searches within the same browser behaviour).
Internet Explorer also shows very erratic behaviour.

In any case you _have_ to observe the following IWS message displayed:

Wait for the page to load completely.

Click OK _only_ after the page is fully loaded. If you do not wait, it will
_not_ work. This applies regardless of whichever browser you use.

Other factors which might affect the function:

The application in which the word to be searched is highlighted (I have
checked that using the Notepad editor, Word and Déjà Vu).

The monitor in which the word to be searched is highlighted (this only
applies if you use several monitors).
It seems that some applications cannot capture the entire Windows Desktop,
but will only detect the Primary Monitor (see Windows's Control Panel >
Display).

The most stable browser to be used are therefore Firefox and Slim Browser.

Kind regards,

Josip

There can only be one blue-highlighted search per group, and it must be
on the same button in each group.
To set the button, you need to change:
Right click icon>Program settings>Default search n.

The obvious thing could be that I only have one ProZ language pair and
you have more than one. Perhaps &pair=my only works if you have only one
language pair.

Could you send me (privately) the source code of the ProZ Term Search
page you see when you choose My languages?

IntelliWebSearch puts the result page URL together (Start+[search
string]+Finish), and sends it via the operating system to the browser.
The only part of the procedure you can affect is the first step (i.e.
composition of the result page URL), by carefully choosing the search
settings in IntelliWebSearch.

If the IntelliWebSearch Finish string has &pair=my in it somewhere, then
it should be right according to my findings (I examined the source
HTML), and it actually works on my system with three different browsers.

Since we can safely exclude garbling by the operating system (otherwise
there would also be problems with other search settings), the snag would
appear to be at the browser end.

The odd thing is that when we both use the same browser (Firefox 3.5),
it works for me, but it doesn't work for you.

I am sure we are overlooking something obvious, but I cannot think what
it is at the moment.

But of course, I tested it by using the file to update a previously
installed version. You did a fresh install.
Very silly little bug fixed in installer. IntelliWebSearch version
number remains the same (no changes made), but installer becomes
3.1.0.31b (already on-line).

The file that did not install contains the list of localized interface
languages. Since it is essential when checking for updates, it is
automatically regenerated if missing when you run the check. Ergo, if
you want it, just run a check for updates (right click icon>Check for
updates).

Thank you

Well, as a matter of fact, I tested it with Google Chrome, which is,
on my opinion, the fastest browser i've used. I'm logged on my ProZ
WTS page, with "My languages" option, and every time I use IWS a new
tab is created (OK, I know this is correct) but with "Any language

I've just changed setup to open Firefox 3.5 but the result is the
same.

Afternoon Jocelyn,

> Hello, I'm new to IWS. When I highlight a phrase in my source text and do
CTRL+ALT+B, it enters itself in the search boxes in my selected search engines,
dictionaries etc, but with the word "ERROR" between each word and the next. Why?

This odd behaviour has already been reported by another user. There is a
workaround, but I would also like to understand why it affects some
people (two so far including yourself).

Which version of IntelliWebSearch are you using?
What operating system are you using?
Which browser do you use?
Have you ever upgraded IntelliWebSearch?
In order not to disturb the whole group, perhaps you could reply in private.

The workaround is this:
Open the settings for each search you use (double click icon>Search
settings, then Edit>Edit selected) and put a + in Interword separator.
If that does not work, try %20

Regards
Mike

Try disabling "use keyboard hook" (right click icon>Program settings).
Let me know if it makes a difference.

Hi Michael,

When I tested the combination of IWS and Macro ToolWorks yesterday I
only tested for crashes (which didn't occur). I did not actually work
with it.

This morning I started working with Transit XV, IWS and Macro ToolWorks.
I have written some MTW macro's (e.g. to get the word at the cursor into
the Search & Replace dialog). My observation is, that these macro's
don't work anymore. (Regardless of the loading order of IWS and MTW)

Can it be that IWS polls the keyboard or is triggered by dialogs?

Thanks,

Hans

Dear IntelliWebSearch users,
I thought you might like to know that if you enrol in both
English-language IntelliWebSearch training events together, you get a
30% discount on the second event. Be careful to add them both to the
same "shopping cart" before completing the payment form (i.e. checking
out). Otherwise you cannot get the discount.

There will be a very short free on-line presentation of the
IntelliWebSearch On-Line Training Sessions today at 15.00 UTC/GMT.
Attendees will see how everything works and hear a description of what
the on-line training sessions cover.

For more information, see:
http://www.intelliwebsearch.com/training.html
