Nokia 770 Internet Tablet Offers New Linux Opportunities

Nokia announced the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, a Linux-based consumer product, on May 25. At the same time, Nokia introduced mobile developers to the Nokia Internet Tablet 2005 software edition and to maemo, an open source development platform.

The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet is a Web browsing device; it does not include mobile telephony features. Its software inventory includes the Linux OS kernel, Debian's package management system, and the Scratchbox cross-compilation toolkit. Applications include browsing, e-mail, newsreader, and Internet radio. The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet offers both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

For mobile developers, the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet brings new opportunities to work with Nokia. Developers can either create new applications or port existing ones to the device. Innovation houses and service providers can also license and embed software in Nokia Internet Tablets.

Tip of the Week: Discover Capabilities of Feature Pack 3

Series 60 2nd Edition SDK for Symbian OS, Supporting Feature Pack 3, For C++, Beta, includes the new Feature Discovery API, which lets mobile developers programmatically determine whether given optional features are present on the devices executing their applications. This lets developers certify and deploy a single distribution package that will, for example, store pictures on the device's MultiMediaCard (MMC) if one is present or upload them to the user's Web site if the Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) protocol is supported.

The CFeatureDiscovery class can be used statically (best for querying a single feature) or dynamically (best for querying many features):

// Static use, best for querying one feature:
TBool isSupported =
 CFeatureDiscovery::IsFeatureSupportedL(KfeatureIdUsb);

// Use dynamic when querying
multiple features
// Dynamic using Newly():
CFeatureDiscovery* test =
 CFeatureDiscovery::Newly();
TBool us =
 test->IsSupported(KFeatureIdUsb);
TBool mmcSupported =
 testA->IsSupported(KFeatureIdMmc);
delete testA;

// Dynamic using NewLC():
CFeatureDiscovery* testB =
 CFeatureDiscovery::NewLC();
TBool wcdmaSupported =
 testB->IsSupported(KFeatureIdProtocolWcdma);
TBool gsmSupported =
 testB->IsSupported(KFeatureIdProtocolGsm);
CleanupStack::PopAndDestroy();

Series 80 Platform: Ad Hoc Communications over WLANs

Many Symbian OS developers already know about ad hoc networking using the Bluetooth APIs, but now they have a new option: ad hoc networking over wireless LANs (WLANs). Using WLANs offers a transmission distance of up to 100 meters -- 10 times farther than that of Bluetooth connectivity. And as the base of smartphones and Series 80 devices expands, developers will find that the market for WLAN-capable, Symbian OS phone applications is growing, too.

As a rule of thumb, WLAN best suits applications that need both high data-transfer rates (up to 11 Mbps) and access to an existing network. Bluetooth technology, on the other hand, is best for applications that use short, noncontinuous connections to other devices. This is due to the better device and service discovery of Bluetooth technology, an important advantage when mobile devices are randomly searching for other devices. WLAN access, however, offers more network flexibility. On a WLAN, the network connection is defined by the application developer, while a Bluetooth connection can only be a master/slave setup.

Series 60 Platform Offers Multimedia Opportunities

The business case is stronger than ever for developing multimedia applications for the Series 60 Platform. Series 60 smartphones let developers deliver multimedia products that enhance the user experience with video clips, audio files, images, photographs, graphics, animations, and even media players and video streaming. In fact, many developers have found the Series 60 Platform an ideal first choice in moving PC multimedia applications to the mobile realm.

From a developer's perspective, Series 60 Platform 3rd Edition, announced earlier this year, offers serious multimedia enhancements. These new features include: Macromedia Flash for animation; Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) APIs and an SDK for IP-based communications; a multimedia framework (MMF) Digital Rights Management (DRM) API for music and video playback; Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) DRM v2.0 Base Services for security and protection; and the Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) API to enhance interoperability among cameras and other imaging devices.

Salam Reza,

You didn't say which verison of SDK you are using. Now on Nokia site there are new ones with FP (Feaure pack) so they have changed the naming of packages etc.

But anyway I explain in general, if you explain step by step what you do and what you see on screen it might be easier to help.

From your email it seems you got the SIS file created, didn't you get any error when you did ?

makesis  mypackagefile.pckg

If you saw an error here you can't continue you need to fix this first.
The problem might be your resource files, bmp, pictures, etc are missing.

If you package file is reading from THUMB make sure you build first for THUM it means :

abld build THUMB UREL

Before you do :

makesis mypackagefile.pckg

But from your email it seems you got SIS working then can start installing, those untrusted messages are not errors are just warning so you can just accept and continue. Once you are done you should go to the list in the menu at the end find your application and double click on that to start it.

I don't understand why in this step you are saying you are using FExplorer to open your application ? why do you use FExplorer ? you should just go to the shell it means where you see the icon of all other applications like Connect, Calendar etc and at the end of list find your application Icon and click on that and open it.

If you click on that it gives you error and doesn't start you misses some RESOURCE file check your package and sis again to make sure you are taking the resource file too.

If during installation of SIS on Device you got error that it's not supported for this device the problem is between SDK v1.2 and SDK v2.0 stuff has changes so you need to have right UID for SDK itself in your package, chech the RED color below for SDK 2.0. You didn't say which SDK you chose so I am attaching the hello world for SDK 2.0

The best thing is first try the hello world package which comes with the SDK make first sure that that one works before you do your own application.

Then make sure you have the same UID for SDK that Hello world of that SDK has.

You have two UIDs one is your application's UID the other one is the SDK's UID. The SDK UID should match exactly with what is in that hello world for att you should be able to install the SIS on that device.

For example SDK v 1.2 you can install only on Nokia 3650 but SDK v2.0 you need to have Nokia 6600. So make sure you have right SDK and right Device and right UID then you should be fine.

But try first with hello world before you go to your own application.

Let us know how it goes and where the problem was so that other people learn something too.

Br,
Rosso

Br,
Rosso

BT, Virgin to test mobile TV technology
Mobile-phone operators seek to leapfrog rivals
Updated: 12:12 p.m. ET June 2, 2005

LONDON - British fixed-line carrier BT Group Plc is teaming up with mobile phone brand Virgin Mobile to pilot a new live mobile TV service using a digital radio technology.

advertisement
<A TARGET="_top" HREF="http://ad.doubleclick.net/click%3Bh=v3|328e|3|0|%2a|n%3B15852437%3B0-0%3B0%3B11271878%3B4307-300|250%3B10001896|10019792|1%3B%3B%7Esscs%3D%3fhttp://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/businessSolutions/mobileProfessional/index.jsp"><IMG SRC="http://m3.doubleclick.net/846685/02-14-05_300x250_panel.gif" BORDER="0"></A>
BT said 1,000 Virgin Mobile customers would get access to Sky Sports News, Sky News, new music channel Blaze, more than 50 digital radio channels and the UK’s first electronic program guide on a mobile via DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast) technology.

“BT ... intends to be Europe’s first commercial mobile entertainment service to deliver broadcast TV and entertainment services direct to DAB-enhanced mobile phones and media players,” Chris Hutchings, director ventures of BT’s BT Wholesale division, said on Thursday.

Mobile operators such as Vodafone Group, O2 and Orange are among those testing a rival technology called DVB-H, or the Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld standard, to broadcast television channels direct to mobile phones.

But the companies, which already offer selected live mobile TV by streaming channels over their high-speed, third-generation (3G) networks, need new spectrum before they can start commercial services using DVB-H.

Because it is a broadcasting technology, DVB-H promises to allow an unlimited number of mobile devices to receive quality channels. In the UK at least,  regulator Ofcom has said more spectrum will only be allocated in 2008 — although companies such as O2 are urging more speed.

BT, which is also working with U.S. software giant Microsoft , broadcast transmission group Arqiva, Taiwanese supplier HTC, radio group GCAP Media and digital radio network Digital One, said DAB mobile TV could run on existing spectrum and transmission networks.

There are two versions of DAB for mobile TV — one used in South Korea, dubbed T-DMB, and another more generic version which BT plans to trial because it uses Internet Protocol, which allows content to be charged for and protected.

“In the long term both (DAB and DVB-H) are likely to coexist,” BT said. “However, in the short to medium term, the availability of spectrum and transmission networks will result in country by country differences.”

BT, which said its four-month pilot would begin in June in central London, said that the wholesale service would allow mobile operators to offer customers access to television and radio channels broadcast direct to DAB-enhanced devices such as smartphones and personal media players.

As one of the only former European telecoms monopolies without a cash-generative mobile operator, BT is shoring up revenues in its traditional fixed-line telephone business with a range of enhanced fixed and mobile services.

Research and Markets: Nokia Launches a Pilot Project Enabling Mobile Phone Users to Watch Television Broadcasts on Their Handsets in the Helsinki Region
Friday June 10, 11:52 am ET

DUBLIN, Ireland, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c19004 ) has announced the addition of Asia Subscriber Forecast for Mobile Television to their offering.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20040820/RESEARCH )

There are a number of interesting developments and technologies that will see the delivery of television and radio broadcasting to mobile phones, handheld devices, and automobiles before the end of the decade.

Mobile technology will have a significant role in providing broadcasting services. Handheld television services can allow broadcasters to reach their audience regardless of where viewers are located.

3G or UMTS technology, that many mobile operators have spent billions of dollars developing, will be unable to cost-effectively broadcast live TV programs to many clients simultaneously.

Digital Video Broadcast Handheld, or DVB-H, standard for the services, and Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting, or DMB, can provide live broadcasting at far less cost.

Technical trials of DVB-H services are currently under way in Europe and US, and Nokia recently launched a pilot project enabling mobile phone users to watch television broadcasts on their handsets in the Helsinki region.

Korea's SK Telecom's Satellite DMB service will provide a multimedia mobile broadcasting service that converges telecommunications and broadcasting. The satellite DMB enables customers to view broadcasts on handheld terminals like mobile handsets, PDAs or in-car devices.

The satellite DMB service provides 25 audio channels for music, news, education, and 3 data channels for information services.

Samsung Electronics has completed development of the world's first satellite DMB chip for mobile phones. Korea Telecom plans to launch satellite DMB in 2006.

To help you understand the opportunities from a consumer point of view, APRG has polled mobile users from seven Asian countries on their perspectives for receiving live broadcasts on their mobile handsets.

 Key metrics and forecasts in this report include:
- Subscriber Interest - Australia
- Subscriber Interest - China
- Subscriber Interest - Hong Kong
- Subscriber Interest - Korea
- Subscriber Interest - Philippines
- Subscriber Interest - Singapore
- Subscriber Interest - Thailand

Series 40 Platform 3rd Edition Delivers New Value

The new Series 40 Platform 3rd Edition, which Nokia introduced this week, delivers an advanced mobile experience to consumers and a huge new opportunity to mobile developers. The platform offers consumers enhanced access to their media, more interaction with their friends, and better control over their busy schedules. This rich media environment is embedded in the highest-volume mobile platform in the market.

The platform enhancements let developers create valuable applications that generate more revenue. Technical enhancements of Series 40 Platform 3rd Edition include: streaming video (H.263 format); streaming audio (AMR-WB and AAC formats); and new Java™ APIs, including Mobile 3D Graphics API for J2ME™ (JSR-184), Mobile Media API (JSR-135), PDA Optional Packages for the J2ME™ Platform (JSR-75), and Java™ APIs for Bluetooth (JSR-82).

New Series 40 Devices Sport Big Displays

To accompany Series 40 Platform 3rd Edition (see story above), Nokia this week introduced three Series 40 Platform devices housed in sliding cases and featuring new, high-resolution (320 x 240-pixel), 2.2-inch (diagonal) QVGA displays. All three phones are scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter.

The Nokia 6265 device is Nokia's most feature-rich CDMA phone to date. In addition to the large display, the Nokia 6265 device features a 2-megapixel camera with LED flash, digital music player, Bluetooth wireless technology, and miniSD card support. The Nokia 6265 device also supports downloadable Java™ 3D applications, Location API for J2ME™ (JSR-179), and wireless data transfers.

The Nokia 6270 device combines multimedia with familiar technologies, modern design, and quad-band GSM support. Its key features include a 2-megapixel camera, e-mail with attachment support, a digital music player, stereo speakers with 3D sound effects, stereo FM radio, and Bluetooth wireless technology support. The Nokia 6270 device will be available in Europe, Africa, and Asia (including China).

The Nokia 6280 device includes most of the features of the Nokia 6270 device and adds a second camera and support for 3G services, including real-time video sharing and two-way video calls. It runs on both WCDMA and EGSM systems. The second camera, a VGA unit, supports both video calls (face-to-face conversations) and video sharing (one-way video during a voice session). The Nokia 6280 device will be available in Europe, Africa, and Asia (including China).

Tip of the Week: Connecting MIDlets to Local Files

The FileConnection APIs in JSR-75 let MIDlets interact with the local file system using an extension of the Java™ programming language's Generic Connection Framework (GCF). The interface became available with Series 60 Platform 2nd Edition, Feature Pack 2, and is also available in some of the latest Series 40 Platform devices. Much of what mobile developers already know about using the GCF also applies to the file interface, but with three important differences:

- A call to Connector.open() will succeed even if the file doesn't currently exist (in which case it creates a new file).

- A FileConnection can remain open after the input or output streams are closed. (Be sure to call the FileConnection.close() method when you're done so the file will be available for other applications.)

- A FileConnection object can be reused using the setFileConnection() method. (This method is most often used in traversing directories.)

Top Tool: Series 60 Theme Studio for Symbian OS

Series 60 Theme Studio for Symbian OS is a PC tool for creating Themes for Series 60 Platform 2nd Edition mobile devices, such as the Nokia 6600 imaging phone. The tool lets developers create custom Themes that can alter the appearance of all Series 60 UI components. With this tool, Themes can be created, edited, and viewed. Also, with full Series 60 UI emulation, the appearance of wallpaper, application icons, color schemes, and any other UI component can be evaluated.

Once a Theme has been created, the Series 60 Theme Studio will package it into a Symbian OS installation file and prepare it for Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection, if required. The Theme is then ready for certification and then deployment.

Developer Spotlight: One-Step Series 60 Voice Control

VSuite 2.0 is the latest application from Forum Nokia PRO member VoiceSignal Technologies Inc. of Woburn, Massachusetts. The software provides a simple voice-command interface that lets mobile consumers look up and dial any listing in their phone books and open any Series 60 application without using their keypads. VSuite 2.0 is speaker-independent and requires no user training.

VSuite 2.0 is available in 15 languages, and it is available in the U.S. as a preinstalled application on several Nokia devices through the Cingular network and other GSM operators and distributors of Nokia products. VSuite 2.0 also works on all other Nokia Series 60 devices.

Britain's BT Group to launch fixed line mobile telephone service

Wed Jun 15, 1:21 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) - British telecoms operator BT Group unveiled a new mobile phone service that can also be used as a fixed line telephone, it announced in an official statement.

ADVERTISEMENT

The telecoms giant said its BT Fusion phone would work like a mobile outside and automatically switch to a broadband line once users enter their home.

"BT Fusion works just like a mobile phone when you are out and about, but switches automatically and seamlessly onto a BT broadband line when you get home," the group said.

"That means you get all the convenience and all the features of a mobile phone but with fixed lines prices and quality."

According to BT, a 10-minute telephone call outside of peak demand hours from the fixed line would cost up to 95 percent less than a typical mobile phone call.

The product, currently being tested with 400 BT customers, will be available on the market from September this year.

Nokia Announces Next Generation Java™ Platform for Series 60

At this week's 2005 JavaOne conference, Pertti Korhonen, Nokia's chief technology officer and senior vice president, announced the Next Generation Java Platform for Series 60. This enhancement will drive dramatic improvements in the remote management of mobile devices and create new business opportunities in the mobile middleware market.

Nokia's next generation of Series 60 devices will offer the Connected Device Configuration (CDC), providing a flexible and modular device environment. With CDC incorporated into the Series 60 Platform, Nokia and other
Series 60 device manufacturers will be able to offer mobile devices that easily allow the addition and customization of functionality after their deployment. Nokia's vision of the future of mobile Java technology for the Series 60 Platform centers on a platform that is a standards-based, service-oriented, managed, and secure computing environment. The new features will be aligned with two Java™ Specification Requests (JSRs) currently being defined: Mobile Service Architecture for CLDC (JSR-248) and Mobile Service Architecture for CDC (JSR-249). New developer tools supporting CDC on the Series 60 Platform will be made available in the second half of this year by Forum Nokia.

Introducing Forum Nokia PRO Zones

Nokia introduced Forum Nokia PRO Zones, an enhancement to the Forum Nokia PRO program, at the 2005 JavaOne conference. The first two PRO Zones announced are Enterprise and Networks. Forum Nokia PRO Enterprise Zone will provide qualified developers with enterprise system roadmaps and product prototypes. The program will also offer customer events and promotional support, Webinars and marketing materials, customer and channel collaboration, and market development funding. Forum Nokia PRO Networks Zone will provide qualified developers with network market and technical information geared to operators and their networks, as well as technical support and an application-testing facility.

Nokia Developer's Suite and Prototype SDK for J2ME™ Updates

Also at the 2005 JavaOne Conference, Nokia introduced two development tools for the Java™ 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME™) platform. Nokia Developer's Suite 3.0 for J2ME™ is a software development tool that enhances the development and verification of applications for Nokia devices. It includes tools for creating Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) and Personal Profile applications, as well as tools for designing UIs, signing applications, and deploying applications to devices. The suite also includes tools for managing, configuring, and running emulators for various Nokia platform and device SDKs. Key features include a Class Creator, UI Designer, Screen Flow Designer, and Web Services client tool.

Nokia Prototype SDK 3.0 for J2ME™ lets developers run and test J2ME applications before the final SDKs become available. This package of emulators, APIs, documentation, and examples works with devices compatible with the Series 40 Platform, Series 60 Platform, or Series 80 Platform, as well as with the Nokia 7710 widescreen smartphone. The SDK is based on reference implementations of the Java APIs, providing early availability and fast performance. Applications are created, compiled, and packaged using any compatible integrated development environment (IDE) and then are transferred to the SDK to verify the application's functionality. Developers can also use the SDK's text editor and command-line tools to create and compile applications.

Easier Mobile Web Services

A new suite of tools and Java™ API support from Nokia make it easy to use Web services within mobile applications. Nokia Developer's Suite 3.0 for the Java™ 2 Platform, Micro Edition makes it easy to use the J2ME™ Web Services Specification (JSR-172). It provides all the hooks needed to interact with a Web service, including a flexible UI, security, and built-in network protocols.

Developers create a Web Services Description Language (WSDL) file for publishing the server functionality as a Web service. The same WSDL file will then be reused to generate the device application stub code that connects the application to the service, handles the details of communicating with the service, and delivers the results of the service call for use within the application.

Web services let consumers tap the power of fixed servers and large databases from their mobile devices. Developers can write and host their own Web services or leverage existing ones. Typical services offer corporate address books, airline schedules, weather information, search engines, and package tracking.

MP3 Streaming for Java™ Applications

At the 2005 JavaOne Conference, a Nokia researcher showed how a Java™ application can stream music over a Bluetooth connection. The demonstration represents the first implementation of encoded music streaming over Bluetooth connections in a Java application. In the demonstration, created by Mika Pohto of the Nokia Research Center, up to seven Series 60 mobile devices streamed MP3 music files to a PC with hi-fi speakers. The PC played the files in the order they were received. The demo was based on a Java MIDlet using Java APIs for Bluetooth (JSR-82).

Learn to develop MIDlets that use Bluetooth connectivity

Tip of the Week: Clear RMS During MIDlet Updates

Mobile developers can control whether data stored by a MIDlet is preserved during MIDlet upgrades. For example, a developer may offer a free Java™ game containing one level of play and an upgrade that includes five levels for a fee. A paid user would download and install the full version to replace the trial edition.

By default, data stored by a MIDlet using the Record Management System (RMS) is preserved during such an upgrade. This can be useful when, for example, the data contains user preferences that should be transferred to the new version. But it might not be desirable when the records contain subscription data that no longer applies.

To preserve the RMS data, overwrite the current MIDlet with a new one of the same name. The RMS data will not be erased during the installation. To delete the data, simply remove the current MIDlet from the device before installing the upgrade. This can be accomplished by first asking the consumer to remove the current MIDlet, then sending the consumer a Short Message Service (SMS) message with a link to a download of the upgraded MIDlet.

NOTE TO READERS: The Nokia Developer Newsletter will publish one issue in August and resume its regular, biweekly publication schedule in September.

Tip of the Week: Activate Views in Symbian OS

Mobile developers can build responsive interactions among Series 60 applications using the view architecture. A view is a collection of interface elements -- controls, menus, command button areas, and events -- in a Symbian OS application. It is common for an application to switch between views. For example, a Web browser can switch between a "browse" view and a "bookmark" view. A developer can also switch between views of different Symbian OS applications, such as an e-mail reader and an external spam filter.

The Series 60 Platform supports the following view interactions:

- Activate a view in another application, and pass it a message.

- Monitor a view, and receive notification of all view events.

- Monitor a view, and receive notification when it is activated.

- Monitor a view, and receive notification when it is deactivated.

Here's how to activate a view in another application:

Call ActivateViewL() with the ID of the new view and an optional message.

The operating system will in turn call the following function within the called view:

void ViewActivatedL(
 const TVwsViewId& aPrevViewId,
 TUid aCustomMessageId,
 const TDesC8& aCustomMessage)

Note the presence of aPrevViewId, which makes it possible to return to the calling view. Also note the provision for one-way message passing to the newly activated view.

New Developer Features on the Series 60 Platform

Because Series 60 Platform 2nd Edition, Feature Pack 3 is based on Symbian OS v8.1a, it offers many valuable new features and APIs for mobile developers. One key addition is the scalable UI, which enables seamless support for multiple screen sizes on Series 60 devices. Previous versions of the Series 60 Platform supported only devices with a fixed screen resolution of 176 x 208 pixels. By contrast, the new version helps developers preserve their software's look and feel in any screen resolution.

Another important enhancement in Feature Pack 3 is the Feature Discovery API, which lets software run on multiple Series 60 Platform versions and devices. The API does so by inquiring whether the current environment supports specific hardware and software features, such as Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) and Bluetooth connectivity.

Orange Nokia Series 60 Challenge Winners Announced

The winners of the Orange Nokia Series 60 challenge have been announced. The contest, held to encourage developers to design 3G applications for use with Symbian OS on the Nokia 6630 smartphone, attracted nearly 100 developers. A joint Orange-Nokia panel evaluated the proposals by using workshops, usability audits, prioritized technical support, and two rounds of Symbian Signed testing. The winners are:

- Best Consumer Solution: NINJ Ltd. of Zurich, Switzerland, for VirtualRadio, the first streaming MP3 radio player for mobile devices. VirtualRadio features more than 100 stations.

- Best Enterprise Solution: Flextronics Software Systems of New Delhi, India, for its Visitor Management System. This messaging system lets users receive visitor alerts on their mobile devices, including a photograph and other details of a visitor.

- Most Entrepreneurial Developer: The Phlog online community. Having started with a vision of building a mobile community, the community developed the idea of building relationships through sharing photos.

Each winner will attend the next Orange Code Camp event for free, and their applications will be promoted in the Orange catalog, which is distributed to 54 million Orange customers in 16 countries.

Developer Spotlight: Indiagames Gets PRO Benefits

Developers wondering what all the excitement over Forum Nokia PRO is about should take a look at Indiagames Ltd. This Mumbai, India, publisher and developer of such mobile games as The Day After Tomorrow and Garfield in Dreamland is using the PRO program to great benefit. "The excellent technical and business support offered by Forum Nokia PRO makes it an absolute must for anyone who is looking at mobile games as a serious business," says Vishal Gondal, Indiagames' CEO.

For example, Indiagames developers recently attended Forum Nokia PRO customer-matchmaking events in both Singapore and Prague. The company's applications have been featured in Forum Nokia articles. Indiagames launched applications with operators in several regions, with help from Forum Nokia. The company also took advantage of Forum Nokia PRO's device-loaner program and technical support.
