JAGIS-ites:
A story in the current edition of Directions Magazine focuses on an
interesting GIS tool out from Spatial Insights, Inc.
"ProximityDemographics" [sic] seems to be sorta of hybrid tool that uses
buffering concepts along with the potential step-wise aggregation of block
level data from the census. The result would appear to be a much more
fine-grained view of demographics.
This could be helpful, for example, in getting a better understanding of the
realities of racial integration in a neighborhood. I suspect, too, that
this tool might have greatly shortened the labors of Rose Ciotta and friends
in Philly and their study of DUI and liquor license locations a couple years
ago. At the very least it would have shown more about who lives in the
neighborhoods immediately around the package stores, bars, etc.
