Friends and colleagues:
We would appreciate it if you could forward this message to any contacts you
think might have some suggestions for appropriate cases for inclusion in
this book-to-be.

July 2004
Friends:
We are putting together a proposal for a book of international case studies
demonstrating the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in public
safety and security. The proposal will be submitted to ESRI, the company
that publishes the ArcGIS software and has its own publishing division.
(http://esripress.notlong.com) There will be NO cases from the U.S., and we
hope to include examples from all of the continents and major regions of the
world.
Our definition of “public safety and security” is purposely quite broad. We
want to consider not just policing and law enforcement, but fire department
and emergency response teams, toxic and hazardous materials, health care and
epidemiology, evacuation plans, early-warning systems for forest fires,
volcanic activity, avalanche potential, tsunami events and whatever other
imaginative and creative applications of GIS you and your colleagues know
are being used.
We are looking for interesting, innovative and proven examples of public
agencies using GIS tools to:
· Analyze historic and traditionally collected data to understand past and
contemporary phenomena
· Develop new data collection and analytic tools to understand contemporary
phenomena from new perspectives
· Develop new assessment and planning measures
· Communicate appropriate findings and plans to various audiences
(colleagues, administrators, politicians, citizens)
If the proposal is accepted, we will be literally traveling the world,
visiting cities and nations to do the appropriate reporting and to gather
the case-specific graphics to illustrate the accomplishments of the agencies
and their personnel.
We would appreciate any suggestions you could offer as to appropriate cases
we might include in the book. Just a descriptive paragraph or two and how
we can contact the key players would be a great assist. Of course, any
documents or Web links would be most welcome.
One of our objectives for the book is to publicize the advancements being
made in applied information technology in all nations, and we would like to
include yours. We look forward to hearing from you.
All the best,
