If I can offer another good site, it's
www.planetizen.com. It offers news stories, podcasts,
commentary and more about urbanism issues -- possibly
good sources for story ideas -- and even sends you
regular e-mail with links to their top stories,
commentary, etc. You also can join for free and then
can submit links to news articles that the editors
will review and put online for all to see.
If I can quickly introduce myself here, I work on
the Phila. Daily News sports copydesk, and I am in a
GIS certification program at Rowan University in
Glassboro, NJ, where I also am an adjunct in the
journalism department. I'm taking GIS as a way to
"diversify my portfoliio," and I also occasionally
weave issues of development/sprawl/etc. into the
stories my copy-editing students work on. We had an
interesting discussion in class last week on a story
about the flawed FEMA flood maps. It got 'em thinking.
