Have you tried slipstreaming  SP1 into Vista?

Yes, I would normally do that. Of course, I wouldn’t sell a Dell to begin with!!

I would convince the client of the benefits of a "clean install." For that
matter, upon receiving a new computer from Dell or whoever I nuke the system
and reinstall the OS and the software we need (and only that software).

Does anyone in the Louisville area happen to have a copy of Windows Vista
Home Premium Upgrade WITH Service Pack 1?
I have a client that I sold a new PC to with XP Media Center Edition that
included a free upgrade to Vista. I'm trying to go from XP to Vista to
Windows 7 without doing a clean install. His upgrade disk does not include
Service Pack 1. I have completed the upgrade to Vista, but it WILL NOT let
the SP1 upgrade install

Thanks Al. I had forgotten that slipstreaming even existed. Have never had the need to use it but it may be just the answer I’ve been looking for. Unless of course I could just find the original disk from MS with SP1 already installed!!

I have a copy of Vista Home Premium 64Bit SP1 that came with Debbie’s Dell computer.  Would that be helpful?

Folks,

I have exciting news!

There have been plans for a worldwide tour of SBS groups brewing in the backchannel, and it just got the funding thumbs up!  This will be similar to the tour that we had back in 2006 (for those of you who’ve been around long enough to remember that one).

Louisville is slated as one of the very first stops on the tour, which is awesome, but it also gives us very little time to plan and make this thing happen. And when I say “little” I mean ‘weeks’ not months.

If you’ve got any desire to help plan / execute / publicize / participate in this event, please come to the KYSBSUG meeting tomorrow night (http://kysbsug.eventbrite.com). We need all hands on deck who are willing! J

Thanks!!!

Tim,

I can't make it to the meeting, but PLEASE give me the details.  Is Indy on the list, as well?

Thanks,

Daniel

Thanks!!!

Chuck,

I’m like you – I like to see it in writing too. ;-)

The official wording regarding the PAO (Premium Add-On) is “Windows Server technology usage rights are covered by your initial Small Business 2011 Standard CALs or Essentials Server license.” That’s taken from this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/sbs/en/us/licensing.aspx

That covers one particular member server (PAO). Since SBS 2003 R2 we no longer need CALs for member server OSes, just CALs for the features and roles on top of them (like TS, SQL, etc.). Therefore, because WMS 2011 has its own ‘feature’ CAL, it shouldn’t need a Server OS CAL.

It’s spelled out a little more clearly here on the Microsoft Partner site on the WMS 2011 page:

“2 To correctly license through Microsoft Volume Licensing, a Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 CAL and a Windows Server 2008 CAL are required. It is common in environments where customers are currently using Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 that Windows Server 2008 CALs have been purchased already. To prevent customers from purchasing the same CAL twice, Microsoft has provided two licensing options. One option includes the Windows Server 2008 CAL and the other option excludes it for customers who already own the CAL.”
https://partner.microsoft.com/40161109

Unfortunately, it doesn’t come right out and say ‘you don’t need to buy Server 2008 R2 CALs in an SBSE 2011 environment’ – I wish it did. Regardless, I hope that helps. I’ll CC Susan on this and get her take. If it’s not already spelled out plainly somewhere we can bring it up in the conference call this week.

Client is a medical office.  They are sending their transcription files via filezilla to a service.  The service says they are not getting some of the files.

Anyone else have a client doing this with more success and possibly a different process?

thanks

I just wanted to pick your brain if you know of any other medical practices that still use transcription services and if they do what system do they use to transfer their files over?  We are using the filezilla system to send our dictations from here to our transcriptionist.  She swears by the system but we are having lots of problems with having to redo dictations that were done but that she states she never received.  I’ve taken to giving her a count of how many files should be on each provider’s Dictaphone that I send and then she confirms after receipt.  I’m just trying to figure out if there could be room for lost dictations in the sending of files through filezilla or what could be happening.  We are wasting so much time having to redictate charts that have already been done.

Would the service allow zipping the files into one file before sending (daily for example)?  Also you could turn on logging in filezilla to see if you can pinpoint what is going on…

I found a deal tonight that I wanted to pass along:

HP ProLiant Microserver AMD Athlon II Neo 1.3 GHz / 1 GB RAM / 160 GB HD

Just dropped in price from $329.99 down $50 to $279.99 + free ship at Newegg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859105905

If you folks are looking for a machine to run VOIP, WHS 2011 or SBS 2011 Essentials, this is the lowest price on the Microserver I’ve ever seen.

1 GB of RAM isn’t much, but a single 4 GB RAM chip for the Microserver is about $70 at Crucial.com
http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=766974D6A5CA7304

A 2 GB is chip is about $33.
http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=27A1EDD8A5CA7304

Note: Max RAM on the box is 8 GB (2 slots with 4GB sticks).

Here is what I found..FYI:

Q. How do I obtain CALs for earlier versions of Windows Small Business Server when they are no longer offered on price lists?

A. It depends on what editions you need CAL for:

 If you need additional SBS 2008 or SBS 2003 Standard CALs; you will need to acquire Windows Small Business Server 2011 CAL Suites and exercise your downgrade rights.

 If you need additional SBS 2008 Premium CALs, they will remain available on the Open price lists for a period of time. This is due to the fact that the SBS 2011 Premium Add-on does not include the same components that are in 2008 Premium and therefore the SBS 2011 Premium Add-on CAL Suites do not offer downgrade rights.

 If you need additional SBS 2003 Premium CAL’s you need to obtain SBS 2008 Premium CALs and you would then be eligible to downgrade to SBS 2003 Premium CALs.

Q. How will SBS 2003 CAL activation work in that scenario since SBS 2011 does not require CAL activation but SBS 2003 does?

A. If you have acquired SBS 2011 CALs through the Volume Licensing (VL) channel, you can obtain SBS 2003 CAL product keys through the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC); these keys can then be used to downgrade to SBS 2003 (R2) CAL’s.

For those of you who have purchased SBS 2008 and 2011 CALs from channels other than VL, such as FPP and OEM, please use the following product key to activate your SBS 2003 Standard CALs: KJQBH-XJ6YQ-THYJY-PVDCP-87QT6.
