Thanks, Coby!
I really hadn't considered turning it into a plugin...not a lot of
time for it right now, but if there's enough interest I could release
the web app.
Right now all my free time is going into a web app I'm writing to
promote Go in the U.S. If there are any Go fans out there (see
http://usgo.org), I could sure use some help!

We did vote. Last night we agreed to Thursdays as LARuby's meeting
night, didn't we? Why the second guessing?
Having a consistent meeting night seems important to building the group.

Actually this July 17th is pretty imperfect for me also - I've got to
be in Toronto for a conference July 18th and was hoping to be in
Chicago the 17th on the way.

Hi all - so, on the topic of open source, both Koz and Technoweenie
from Rails Core have talked about some refactoring they want to do but
haven't been able to get to. Both strongly hinted that successful
refactorings of this nature would be welcome contributions. The only
one I remember at the moment is that the JSON stuff in Rails doesn't
use the JSON parser gem, because the gem is newer, but there are many
of these things. At Scotland on Rails Koz did a whole keynote on
things that could be fixed.
Tackling things like this could be a great way to build the code side
of the group - do a bunch of pair programming, and maybe make the
pairs a little uneven in terms of skill, so that we always have some
teaching going on as well.

I'm interested in both contributing to open source and git so I'm definitely interested. This is a good incentive to get a little familiar with git prior to this presentation.

Here's my proposal. 10-15 minute introduction to contributing to open source projects via git and github. Github is a great resource, and is absolutely exploding in popularity within the Ruby community. However, if you haven't had any experience working with git, it can be an ordeal to get used to the procedure and the tasks involved.
This wouldn't get into the guts of using git, but would serve as a good starting point for making your first patch to a project or just exploring some new code.

I'd love to subscribe to everybody's blog if they have one and hear about what open source projects

I look forward to being a part of a great group!

We (YPC) have approval to host this every other month. So between the
Times and YPC, I think we have this covered for the foreseeable future. :)
Following the "third Thursday" convention established already, please
put the date of July 17th on your calendar for next month's meetup at
YPC. We can discuss whether that convention should be made official or
not tonight, but I thought I'd go ahead and pin down the July date so
people can plan for it.
For tonight, let's be sure to discuss how we'd like to see this
evolve, now that the basics of having hosts / sponsors is covered. Do
we want to promote it more aggressively? Do we want to invite
presenters? Etc.
Looking forward to meeting everyone!
Regards,
Dan
Hi everyone,
Hopefully we'll be seeing all of you tonight for LARuby's inaugural
meeting at LA Times Interactive.
For those of you driving in for tonight's event, I am providing the
following instructions for parking:
Please park at the LA Times Employee/Guest Parking Structure located
at 213 S. Spring Street. Let the parking attendant/guard know that
you are attending the "LARuby" event at the LA Times and you will be
allowed to park anywhere above the 1st level.
(Please note Spring is a "one way", southbound running street so
you'll need to be coming from 1st or 2nd St to enter it)
After parking, exit the parking structure onto Spring St. and then
walk up Spring - cross 2nd Street - until you reach the corner of 1st
Street and Spring. The 202 W. 1st Street entrance will be on your
left.
If anyone has any questions or issues, do not hesitate to call me on
my cell phone at: 323.702.1290
See everyone tonight! (Remember food and drinks will be provided so
come hungry!)

Hey everybody,
So we are now a week away and counting from LARuby's first meeting!
Just wanted to make sure everyone has it marked on their calendar and
also remind those who haven't already done so to please RSVP (that
way we have plenty of food and drinks for all).
Also, please spread the word to any friends and colleagues who
might be interested in attending as well or simply drag them along.
And make sure to bring your thoughts and ideas with you to share with
the group about how to make LARuby as cool, exciting and sustainable
as possible. Also, we will be taking suggestions for future
topics/speakers so please come with an idea of what you want to see
and hear at our 2nd meeting!
Here is the announcement again:
LARuby is a new user group created by several passionate Ruby on
Rails developers in the local area in response to Southern
California's quickly growing RoR community. Our goal is for it to
quickly become one of the larger group dedicated to Ruby on Rails -
so join now!

Hi everyone,
I have been meaning to remind everyone that our first meeting is
quickly approaching.
Please try your best to make it (thank you to all who have already
RSVP'd) and please spread the word to any friends and colleagues who
might be interested in attending as well. Looks like we on track to
have as many as 30 attendees (and growing) for the first meeting
which would be very cool!

Sadly I haven't made it to a RailsConf yet. I hope to make it out to
the next one.
That's great that LA Times is using Rails! I hope the job pool in L.A.
continues to grow!
See you at the meeting.

Hello everyone! Did anyone go to railsconf 2008?
My favorite sessions/tutorials was on Metaprogramming for Fun and
Profit, Getting Git, Map Reduce (Skynet from Geni), and the Lightning
Talks on Sunday.
I'd love to hear everyone's experiences.

Hi everyone,
My name is Raul Rubio and I live in Whittier, CA. I've been using
Rails full time for close to a year with a company in Azusa, CA.
(http://ww1.bankspower.com) and have also done a couple of freelance
sites with Rails and currently working on a couple more.
I currently work solo so I'm really anxious to meet some other Ruby on

day when I grow up. ;)

Hello all.
Looks like this is a young/new Group.
Let's introduce ourselves and see if we can't get this going.
My name is Coby Randquist, I've been developing with Ruby and Rails
for a little over two years. I just took a position with
Yellowpages.com and am in the process of relocating to Glendale from
Salt Lake City, UT.
A little over a year ago, my business partner and I started
Confreaks.com to record technology conferences. The ruby community
has been our starting ground. We have recorded the following
conferences that are ruby related since we started:
Goruco 2008 - New York, NY
Mountain West Ruby Conf 2008 - Salt Lake City, UT
Ruby Conf 2007 - Charlotte, NC
Ruby Hoedown 2007 - Raleigh, NC
Mountain West Ruby Conf 2007 - Salt Lake City, UT
Looking forward to getting to know other rubyists in the area.
Since this is such a new group I would recommend doing an [ANN] on
ruby-talk to help spread the word.
