Yes, it was /etc/rc.local. Thanks a million. I'll never forget it again!

It was --nodeps. I think I tried -f and that alone didn't do it.
Anyway, PHP installed, but it's still broken. Think I'll just
reinstall from scratch and change my code to take out that UNION (I
think I only used it in one place!) and live with MySQL 2.32 for the
time being. I'll figure out this package stuff after I have some more
experience. :)

Thanks, folks!

Yikes! Just thought I'd fill you in just in case the question comes
up again. After reinstalling Linux (twice, before I figured out how I
had the network set up the first time) I ran across the trick to that
MySQL upgrade, and it's a snap. Just install the
mysql-shared-compat-<etc> rpm along with the rest. It was done in 30
seconds and the whole site is running perfectly. That info was on the
MySQL web site the whole time, but I missed it. Duhh.....

Thanks for all your help, folks.

Hello !
In recent times we have been listening lot of talk about the linux.
It is free product. It has got great great support. It has so many
users ready to give cordial support on any issue.
I am very much sorry to say that this is real shit and real lie,
specially the Mandrake People. Whenevr one tries to find any
suitable help or support at Mandrake Site, it asks for paid support,
Mandrake unit, Mandrake Clup ...this shit and that shit. I tried to
ask for some support on EXPERT, But unfortunately no so called
EXPERT from Mandrake has riviewed my incident. Every time I see
there, it asks to convert to paid support.
What is difference left between Mandrake and All commercial
softwares. Isn't it trying to mislead people. Wasting their time and
energy....
Please review it.

Sorry about your bad experience. But you need to bear in mind that
free products simply CAN'T have paid support people. Where is their
pay supposed to come from? You have to look elsewhere.

If you take a look at my recent posts, you'll see that I just got some
very excellent support on this very forum. And all free. (Well,
maybe not entirely free from the perspective of Karma; I've answered
loads of questions on JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL forums!) All my Linux
problems are solved and the server is running like a dream. Why don't
you ask your questions here?

Instead of spending so much energy complaining about lack of "official"
support for something you got for zero cost, try looking in other 'zero
cost' places. Use http://google.com/linux as a start. Or use this
forum for something *productive*, instead of ranting and raving like a
bloody lunatic.

Try posting your problem in a reasonable manner, and I am sure that you
will get some help.

Hi, folks. It's me again. Everything was sweet until I tried to
install Bugzilla. Running into quite a mystery.

It says I don't have permission to access bugzilla/index.cgi, but I
CAN access bugzilla/index.html. Both files have the same file owner
(apache) file group, and permissions (755). You'd think if I could
access one I could access the other.

I think I got Apache set up right to run cgi from that directory; at
least I'm not getting configuration errors anymore.

Any ideas?
Thanks,

Since you've decided to cross-post your unfounded accusations to
numerous mailing lists, allow me to repeat here what I said on
another group, just so the casual reader may make their own decision
based on facts:

Mandrakesoft is a company . . . of course they're going to charge
for support if requested directly from them

However, what you don't mention -- and I don't see how you could
possibly have missed this, since you've tried finding "suitable
help" at the Mandrake site -- is that they provide //numerous//
///free/// avenues of support for the user (in addition to providing
free downloads of Mandrake).

There's the Mandrakeclub site (clearly mentioned and linked at the
Mandrake site) which, although there are paid memberships available
for those who want higher-level support and "goodies, offers forums
(most of them free) for users to support each other with questions
regarding install, maintenance, laptops ... whatever.

Mandrake is also kind enough to offer free mailing lists (notably
"expert" and "newbie") which can provide the user with more support
than they'd know what to do with, frankly.

I see no "misleading" here, only "misreading" on your part. There
are lots of free support options. Use them. If you have //valid//
complaints, of course, please state them . . . however, your
complaints above are simply bogus.

Don't rack your brains too much over this. The more I poke around the
more I think it's an Apache configuration error after all.

How did you determine this? I double-checked the post, and I only show
LINUX_Newbies in the To: field. I have seen some messages that contain
multiple groups, but this one didn't (that I could see).

Unless you are subscribed to mutliple groups, I suppose... :-/

Just curious, as I don't much care for cross-posters, myself.

Probably bcc'ed. . . . doesn't matter; identical message in all cases.

Yes; I saw it come through on a good 5-6 lists of which I'm a member

I don't really mind cross-posting all that much, unless it's to
spam, defame or otherwise spread misinformation and havoc.

Heh, yes, that's quite possibly how he knew. That's how I knew. I

Hi KL,

You have just hit on one of the MAIN reasons I moved from Mandrake to
SuSE. On SuSE I was easily able to find free help on their mailing list
on any linux subject. Even if Mandrake does get like SuSE and have a
totally free support option, I doubt VERY much if they will get another
dime from me, especially since SuSE has Novell and IBM backing.

If I had known about Linux_Newbies then, then perhaps my distro would
have been different.

Ask the question here and other linux groups you are subscribed too and
I am sure you'll get an answer. It may not be by Mandrake itself but
you'll find it'll still work. We are all here to help one another.

Hello Hylton and all. Greetings from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. My copy of SuSe
9.1 Professional just arrived yesterday and when I'm done typing this message I
am going to start the install process on a Dell laptop. I also was considering
switching to Mandrake but was just a little put off by their wanting you to
"join the club" before you could download the distribution. I am an amateur
radio operator and have been told by other hams that Mandrake is very amateur
radio "friendly". I eventually found out that if you went to
http://www.linuxISO.org that you could indeed download Mandrake for free and try
it out so I was still willing to give it a try. What pushed me toward SuSe was
that fact that the latest version now comes with a GUI front end for database
work as part of the office suite. This was the "missing link" for me with Linux
on the desktop. I have become a big open source believer using Red Hat and Open
Office so wish me luck. I hope SuSe is as easy to install and configure as
everyone tells me it is.

Hi all, I am now in my 2nd weekend of trying to install Mandrake
Linux 9.2, I have been using my "free week" support via Mandrake
Expert but I assume he is now away for the weekend and I am just on
the point of giving up so I though I would try the wider Linux
commmunity for guideance :o)- I have checked the FAQ's and as warned
will not cross-post . . . .
After about the 8th re-install I am pretty sure my problem is a
graphics card interface orientated, the problem I have been
experiencing is that the program boots OK initially but although I
have 48Mb RAM I am advised that resourses are low ( "ramdisk is not
possible" advised at some stage ??). The program looks as though it
is going to work fine, enter user name and password, even get time to
enter "startx" ( as instructed by Mandrake Expert - whatever thats
supposed to do ?? ) then as soon as it goes to full GUI mode the
screen goes blank and that's the end of that - end-up doing a hard
reset and starting again . . . .
Anyhow, today I am re-installing in text mode, I have got as far
as "Summary" and although cannot configure my soundcard, network or
printer I am concentrating on the "Graphic Interface" configuration -
my card is an ARK LOGIC 2000MT PCI and am running a HP Pavilion SVGA
monitor - I have tried just about every computation of options to no
avail ( at least in text mode I am able to run 'test' - in VGALO mode
I got one chance, failed and was locked up !? ). I have tried with
Xfree3 and Xfree4 ( should I be getting xfree to start on boot
up ? ). I am afraid the "Discovery Guide" purchased with Mandrake
Linux 9.2 is not much use once the auto-install falls over . . ANY
assistance / guideance would be most gratefully received as I am very
close to giving up . . . . THANX

rpm -ivh mysql* --nodeps --force
this would install it forcefully , Please note the bold entry is the rpm name.
"--aid " this switch can be used in place of "--deps" if you got sufficient
dependent rpm s and dunno which one to install to resolve the dependency. Also

Wow. Has anyone come out and said that 48MB of RAM is not enough to
run on Mandrake yet?

According to their web page:
Memory: at least 64 MB is required (32 MB for text-install);
          128 MB is recommended.

You will probably be able to get by if you use a lightweight window
manager like a fluxbox, but I really see the RAM as the biggest problem
you are facing.

Hi Mark - just received response back from "Mandrake Expert" at
same time - he concurs, yes I am pushing the proverbial up-hill with
only 48Mb RAM . . will go away and see if I can pick up a couple

I probably should not say a word since I know as much about Linux as
Keith. Maybe less. But I'm guessing that mandrake is working just
fine. What I think is happening is that with only 48 MB of RAM, it's
making extensive use of the swap file on his hard drive, which is very
sloowwwww.... He just needs to do something away from the computer
while it's loading.

I've been working on getting Slackware up and running on an old
laptop. Slackware claims that it only needs 32 MB of memory. I have
128 MB on the old computer. I've noticed that Gnome runs very slow on
it, while KDE runs faster.

Nothing wrong with posting something if it's wrong--someone else sees,
it, corrects it, then everyone learns something.

One thing I have found, especially at work where we try to resurrect
some old boxes, the CPU can be as big, or more, of a factor than
RAM--obvious as that is, it's often overlooked.

As for Slack, as I ~think~ has been mentioned in this thread, both KDE
and GNOME require a lot of resources. Unless you really need much of
it, using a lighter window manager, such as fluxbox, can make a big
difference.

Wrong! ;)

I wouldn't say so. True, we mostly talk about the RAM, but that's
because the CPU speed is quite obviously a factor, while the RAM is less
obviously one. Also, using too slow a CPU has pretty predictable
results. Not enough RAM - say when trying to run a relatively
memory-intensive program - can have devastating effects on what
otherwise seems a normally, albeit slowly, running system.

Apropos lightweight window managers: I faintly remember reading
something about a framebuffer-based graphical environment a while ago.
Is there such a thing? If yes, has anyone tried it out?

It was all very well going about pure logic and how the universe was
ruled by logic and the harmony of numbers, but the plain fact was that
the disc was manifestly traversing space on the back of a giant turtle
and the gods had a habit of going round to atheists' houses and smashing
their windows.
