I'm new to Linux and I would like to know two things if anybody can
answer them:

1. Does anybody know how to set up the DVD copy of Mandriva (Or Mandrake
I think it's called) Linux to work off the CD or DVD ram so that I can
run Linux straight from the DVD without having to install it on my hard
drive?

2. I'm seriously considering of using Linux as an operating system
considering Windows is as insecure with lose legs. How would I set up
Linux for wireless access for a USB Linksys wireless network adapter?

If i understand correctly:

2x80GB IDE in RAID0 on NForce MB
+ 40GB IDE drive alone.

The "RAID" that the NForce chipset uses is software based, i.e. you
need to load drivers for the host OS to see and use the RAID-ed drives
correctly. (Someone can step up and point out if I'm wrong, but this has
been true since 1998 -maybe before- and installing an OS on a device
that the OS doesn't have drivers for can be an interesting experience.)

Any way, the only way to RAID0 those 2 drives would be to create an
install disk that has the (do they even exist?) NForce Linux RAID
drivers, and supply that for your install. I don't think such exists,
though.

If that's the case then you can only install Linux on the 40GB
drive, or de-stripe your RAID0.

As for a MP3 media player I suggest you use
http://www.fedorafaq.org/ for more info on that.

You mention having install problems when using a graphical mode,
both in FC5 and in Gentoo. That I must admit is a bit odd. Could you
give us more hardware information on your setup?

Can that laptop boot a factory-stamped Windows CD?

If so, then the problem is likely a bad CD burn. You didn't burn a big
.iso file, or use some sort of tool to 'extract' the files out of the
.iso to burn to the CD, did you? (those are the two most common
problems that make a CD not-bootable)

The Live CD version of Mandriva is called Move.

Out of curiosity, does a Windows Xp Pro cd have to be burned from an
.iso image in order for the Windows Xp Pro cd to be bootable? I too
can't get my Windows cd to work either but my Linux cd does. It's not
really that important but I would like to know the answer to that anyway
in case I decided to use Windows Xp Pro again later on in the future.
Once I get my problem (Which I asked previously when I first joined here
this morning) taken care of I'll be going to Linux.

Yep, you got that right. Sorry for the confusion, but the problem
with Gentoo wasn't with installation; instead, I believe it was a
problem with configuring X11. Oh well, I'm planning on attempting to
install FC5 to the 40gb hd tonight and see how that goes. I almost
gave in yesterday and was about to buy a new computer just for Linux
without trying to use RAID or anything, just a generic computer for
Linux, but that money would be better spent elsewhere. I'll post back
later after I've attempted to install FC5 again.

That answers one of the questions - your burned CDs must be OK if they
boot elsewhwere.

However, you didn't answer if that laptop would boot a factory Windows
CD. This will point us to a settings issue if it doesn't, or a media
issue if it does boot a Windows CD.

You don't burn an XP .iso, as Microsoft doesn't supply Windows in this
format. Perhaps you illegally downloaded one from somewhere online?

Thanks steve for the warm welcoming.

Thank you for the info on downloading the Live version of Linux. How do
you load it up on the computer. I've already burned the .iso on a CD. Do
I reboot my computer and boot from the CD rom itself and it then loads
linux up from the CD? I've never done this before that's why I'm green
to it. I know enough about windows and how to install it but I don't
know anything about Linux as far as booting it from the CD and learning
how to operate Linux in general.

There's another thing that I would like to know and learn about it. How
do I run Linux through Windows XP Pro?

Actually no, I bought a copy of Windows Xp Pro off of Ebay. That's
probably why my windows CD doesn't boot up from the CD rom itself unless
I use floppies. The CD is probably messed up. Thanks for the info on

regarding your question about running Linux in Windows, try VMWare Workstation
or Microsoft Virtual Server. They create virtual machines inside your Windows.
Give them a try.

Yes, exactly so. The "live cd" versions of the various Linux flavours
actually do not do an install, which is what is so nice about them
for experimentation. Instead, they boot and run Linux from the CD
and don't touch your machine's hard drive. In this way you can try
a few things before commiting to a real install.

It's generally best to post a separate message (with a fresh descriptive

other topics.

Thanks for the information on that. Once my 3gb Linux file is done
downloading tonight I'll load up the Live CD of Linux that you gave me

As far as for the Windows question, I'll take your advice on that too.
Sorry about the mix up. The Windows question will be coming up next.

Hello Cameron,

About a year ago, I was experimenting with various 'Live CD's and came
across on 'Live BSD' CD that mounted all filesystems on a dual-boot
machine (ext3, NTFS and FAT32), and did not properly unmount any of
them, in the shutdown process.

This caused the NTFS partition (Windows 2k Pro) to become unbootable
(probably should not have been mounted at all), and the FAT32
partitions to complain, and require a scandisk to repair some errors,
and ext3 to fsck on boot.

I mention this because 'not all Live CD's are created equal', and it
is a good idea to test them on a non-critical box, before running
them in a production environment, or to perform diagnostics on a
client's machine.

No, I did buy it off of Ebay, I got it two and a half years ago. It cost
me about $150. But considering there are allot of things going on on
ebay right now, you probably could be right. Although, the CD did have
the label on it but now considering the CD has been around the mill, the
label on the CD and the underneath of it is sorta scratched up and had
to make my own new copy of it that way I would still be able to use it.

So like I said, no, it's not a bootleg.

Hi everyone,

Yesterday was my first day using SUSE linux v10.

I installed it on my pc with no problems.

My friend sent me an email with a video in it. I googled video
players for linux, and MPlayer came up.

I downloaded and unzip it.

I read the install.html and it states I need GCC to install it.

I download gcc-4.1.0 and this is what I get:

Can anyone help me.

Are you asking about a Virtual PC type of thing?

I have DamnSmall Linux on my USB, and use QEMU to run it in a virtual
environment. VMWare and MS VPC are also options.

Hmmmm... It seems that you should use YAST to install MPlayer. YAST is
SUSE's tool for installing apps, and while you *can* hunt down the
source, compile it, find dependencies, etc... :-/ I just think it
would be better to not do it that way.

Having said that, I have never used SUSE outside of testing a LiveCD, so
I don't actually know how to use YAST. Hopefully this helps point you
in the right direction, though.

In addition to what Cameron stated about items getting lost or
overlooked, posting a reply to an earlier post also muddles things up.
For example, look at the highlighted message here:
http://markjensen.googlepages.com/thread.png

Looking at the dates of the message, and the one it is a reply to, you
can see that it is responding to an item that has been dead for over
half a year, and the new post is extremely out-of-place in a threaded view.
