Hi
I put the redhat cd 7.1 in the Cd rom and started the install and all
was well until I got to the part where I was to partition the drive.
I do not have the book and was wondering if someone could give me a
run down on how to get through this part.
"Help" did not help

ah, fun with pdisk,
I'm no expert, though i've used it several times.
if you type L at the prompt it will give you a list of all the disks you have avalible, figure out which one you want to partition
then type e. that will get you in to the partition map editor
big C lets you make new partitions
little c lets you change the partition type.
you have to work in blocks, its a pain. i have found the easist thing to do is parition the drive in a partition tool you are already familar with. and then launch pdisk make note of the partitions you want to convert to unix partitions, their device name (i.e. /dev/hda1 for ide or /dev/sda1 for scsi.) there will be at least two , one for root (/) and one for swap (swap)
also make note of the base block and its length in blocks.
and when you are done you need to write the partition table, and quit and you are done

I had the same problem I think its a bug. If u did
not use the custom install and partitioned ur own
drive it wont allow u to save configurations. Ur best
bet is to go to the SuSE support database and type in
: alias "etho" not found, or what comes up in ur
modules.conf file. Thats how I found out what the
problem was. I think u will find theres an update for
it. Hope this helps. Dj

Of the tools they supply, disk druid is probably the easiest. However, do
you have free space for Linux already? What's on the machine at present?

The best explanation though, would probably be to go to RH's site and look
at their documentation.

http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-7.1-Manual/install-guide/s1-steps-part\
itioning.html

That's where they begin the explanation.

It's intimidating at first--but trust me, after awhile it becomes fairly
easy. :)

If you want to try using fdisk, which is a bit less intuitive, I have a
brief explanation of it at
http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/fdisk.html

Forrest--

The biggest stumbling block I found was setting up the video;
properly
identifying the monitor (horiz and vert refresh rates) and the video
card itself. If you have newer stuff, the monitor should be listed
with the Redhat install. Your video card will need to be properly
identified or you will need drivers specifically for Linux. Most
everything else is pretty easy. Hardware modems and well known
network cards will also obviate many problems. Linux does not play
well with Winmodems, although the support is getting better. I use a
USR 0460 56K ISA modem and have had no problems at all. Redhat
detects it on install (actually, it detects the Com port) and the
rest
is easy.

If you will be dual booting with Windows 98 or ME (ME is PURE
junk), load Windows first on about 5GB, get it configured, drivers
loaded and then load Linux using the rest of the drive. The only
glitch that I see is the monitor but you can play with the settings
during install and hit the "TEST" button to try it. If it doesn't
seem to work correctly, change it and try again.

Actually, set the machine to boot from floppy, then CD, then HDD.
This way you will not have to go back in and change anything later.

NOTE: During install you will be asked to make a boot floppy. This
is a godsend if something messes up so don't skip this step.

Then it just stops and the cursor blinks. I feel Im

its not even wvdial as it seems to be doing what its
meant to. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx

Folks,

A friend set up my Linux system, & generally speeking it works pretty
good.
He doesnt have a phone presently, so I cant talk to him about this wierd
problem.
If anyone here can help, I'd be indebted.

When I boot up any terminal (I've tried them all), and execute the
following command

telnet

I get the following response.

bash: telnet: command not found

In the GTelnet program, I get a message saying:

'telnet' has not been installed on your machine.

So I am guessing that somehow, the telnet progran did not install
properly.

I cant find it anywhere on the computer.

It would help to know what directory it is suppose to be in.
I presume its 'bin' kuz thats where most commands are.
But its not there, nor anywhere else I can see.

So if someone could tell me where telnet is suppose to be installed to,
ie which directory & path its suppose to be in,
that would be greatly appreciated.

And I seem to be without the cd disks my friend made,
so I will probably need to go to a web page and get it.
Unless of course someone has it handy, & they can just attach & send.

first you need to install samba on your linux system... if you have it on your system... check if you have it in your system

find / -name smbd -print
find / -name nmbd -print

or, you can get the latest version from www.samba.org the instructions are given in the readme file on installation of the same...

once you have samba instaled you have to configure a samba server... all the configuration is done in a file named smb.conf
you can usually find this file in the /etc directory or where ever you installed samba. i am currently preparing a slide on samba
installation & configuration... once it is done i'll mail it.

Hi,

Did you install an Mandrake 8.0 GPL package?

In that case, it seems that on some deliveries, you have to install most
packages by yourself (they've made a very nice graphical rpmdrake tool),
even though you've selected all packages on install.

Cheers

Rami

Hi,
I'm happily using RH 6.1. I'm trying to install
kuickshow-0.6.3-1.src.rpm by typing...

           rpm -ivv /home/temp/kuickshow-0.6.3-1.src.rpm

...while I am logged in as 'root'.

The screen echoes a dozen or so lines and then...

           sources in://usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
           spec file in://usr/src/redhat/SPECS
           file:kuickshow-0.6.3.spec action:unknown
           file:kuickshow-0.6.3.tar.gz action:unknown

...then back to the command prompt. 'rpm -q kuickshow' confirms that
the package was NOT installed. I do have gzip 1.2.4-14 and tar
1.13.11-1 installed. This is the first package that I have tried to
install.
Can anyone explain to me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,

The problem seems to be that you're trying to install a .gz with an rpm
command. (Though to be honest, I've never tried that one so don't know if
it works.)

In ~general~ (though one should check the README file)

with a gzip you first type
tar -xvfz kquickshow-0.3-1.tar.gz
This should show stuff happening. When back at prompt,
if you do a ls you should see, in addition to the .gz file, one just saying
kquikshow-0.3-1.
That will be a directory
cd kquickshow-0.3-1
do a ls and you will see either a README or readme (usually README)
cat README | more
this will show the README on the screen, which will usually have
instructions.
Most of the time it's
./configure; make; make install; make clean
(You can do it like that, one line, each command separated by semicolons,
or do it one at a time--since there seem to be errors, you might do it one
at a time--first
./configure
Stuff will happen, hopefully no errors
make
more stuff will happen, probably take a bit longer
make install
more stuff happening, usually takes less time than make
make clean
a bit more stuff happens, doesn't take long. :)

Well, tomorrow I get back my computer with the blank 20 gig drive that
will be my Linux box.
On this machine is a 40 gig Windoze drive but the twain shall never
meet and I am playing it safe and keeping them separate.

I have a question for the assembled experts and please note that I am
no longer cross posting, so I am hoping for a good response.

In installing Red Hat 7.1 on this un partitioned drive how should I
partition it for linux?
I am reading Linux Unleashed , but it is somewhat vague in exactly how
to set the drive up?
Maybe I need Linux for Dummies!??
8-)

Keeping in mind that I am sure that I will eventually end up with
Slackware I am picking redhat just becasue it seems easier to install.

Can someone give me some commands and or specific advise that will
lead me through this part of the install, as when I get to the part
about mounting points I am just lost

Thanks again.

Liked it, Skylinux.

BTW If anyone hasn't seen the Beatles songs modified ("Let It Be" became
"Write in C") let me know _offline_. There are 4 songs - I don't want to
waste group bandwidth. I know how annoying excess stuff is (like unsnipped

What version of RH did you buy? Just the CD's? Deluxe Workstation? If
you bought the workstation version, all the installation manuals will be
included. If you follow the directions EXACTLY, you should have no
problems. The install procedure will ask you a lot of questions about
your computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and you should have the answers
before you actually begin to install. It will ask for IP numbers, net
mask, etc. So in essence, you will need to do some prep work. The Linux
install CD's come with a partition feature, or you can use Partition Magic
if you have a copy. Personally, I would not install Linux unless I have
the manuals at the ready; especially for a first time user.

Good luck,

Dick

A is for Awk, which runs like a snail, and
B is for Biff, which reads all your mail.

C is for CC, as hackers recall, while
D is for DD, the command that does all.

E is for Emacs, which rebinds your keys, and
F is for Fsck, which rebuilds your trees.

G is for Grep, a clever detective, while
H is for Halt, which may seem defective.

I is for Indent, which rarely amuses, and
J is for Join, which nobody uses.

K is for Kill, which makes you the boss, while
L is for Lex, which is missing from DOS.

M is for More, from which Less was begot, and
N is for Nice, which it really is not.

O is for Od, which prints out things nice, while
P is for Passwd, which reads in strings twice.

Q is for Quota, a Berkeley-type fable, and
R is for Ranlib, for sorting ar [sic] table.

S is for Spell, which attempts to belittle, while
T is for True, which does very little.

U is for Uniq, which is used after Sort, and
V is for Vi, which is hard to abort.

W is for Whoami, which tells you your name, while
X is, well, X, of dubious fame.

Y is for Yes, which makes an impression, and
Z is for Zcat, which handles compression.

Hello
I have examined the SUSE Professional package and it seems to be very
well documented.
I have come tot he conclusion that I will eventually install several
Linux distros before finding the one that I want and I may as well
start with the best documented one.

Comments on SUSE?

There was an excellent review by someone on this list of SUSE
professional and the documentation and disks recently but I am on
another box and do not have acces to it or, for another reason, the
archives,

Would soneone please resend that to me.
It was just in the last 2 -3 days?

Comments on SUSE?

Thanks

I just received SUSE 7.2 personal edition--got it on ebay, almost retail
price actually.
Seemed to install well till it got to the monitor. This was a first try,
and I didn't look at the documentation, but, although it's a relatively old
monitor (1999) which RH has listed in its monitor list, wasn't in SUSE's.
Following the instructions, put in VEGA and the settings for vert-hor
refresh rate, but it didn't work. Lowered the settings, it still didn't
work, so I skipped it. Also, unlike RH didn't detect the network card
(Netgear FA310TX).
I repeat, haven't read the manual and just tried a vanilla install, but, I'm
a bit disappointed.
In addition, no Japanese support out of the box for the personal
edition--one would have to either download about 5 ISOs at 640 megs or so or
spend 70 bucks for the professional edition.

Tonight, I'll probably spend some time with the manual and see about
installing it on one of my home boxes--still, I'm a bit irritated--I've
never had trouble with this vid card and monitor on any of the later
distros, including 2.2 kernels.

So, we'll see--my vote isn't in yet. :)
