Recently, I bought the laptop from the original owner with some
warranty time left on it. I found it had the problems described
below. I contacted HP and they repaired it at their cost. However, I
now find that the same problems occur, but much less frequently. That
makes it more difficult to convince HP that there's a problem. I'd
really prefer that they just give me a repalcement. Any advice would
be appreciated.
When started up, the computer seems to behave normally. The modem
will dial into AOL and connect successfully. However, after as
little as 20 minutes, some or all of the following will occur:
1) The modem will dial the AOL number and repeatedly go through the
negotiating process with the outside modem, but will not
connect.
2) The mouse will become 'sticky' on the screen.
3) The mouse and the keyboard will lock up, requiring a restart.
4) A continuous 'screeching' noise will spontaneously start from the
speakers.
When immediately restarted after the above problems, the computer may
continue to have bad symptoms. Notably, the modem will not connect.
(see #1 above) However, if left off for an hour or so, the computer
will behave normally again for a brief period of time, after which
the problems will repeat.
I believe there is a thermal problem. Something overheats and causes
the problems, but regresses to normal behavior after allowed to cool.

Good answer, to buy the individual parts to build a laptop would cost
a fortune. Since there are very few generic parts manufactured for
this units it's much simpler to buy a prefab.

Thank you very much!!!:)

Hi Jason, with the screen open, and looking at the laptop, where it
says "Gateway Solo" near the LCD readout, that plastic piece pops out
without any screw removal.
Once you pop that off, you'll need to unscrew the keyboard hold down
screws and remove the keyboard, from there you should be on your way.

Hi all,
I have a Gateway Solo 2550, that recently started making a noise I suspect
to be coming from the CPU fan. I am quite experienced with desktop
computers, but I just can't figure out how to get this laptop case opened
up so I can get access to all the internals. I removed every screw and
piece of hardware I can find, but I can't figure out how to get the entire
case opened. If anyone knows what the trick is, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanx,
Jason
I have never heard of this being done, the only thing close to this
idea that we've done in the past is use the LCD screen from the
laptop on desktop PCs.
I think the fact that each laptop component is made specifically for
that case and additional components limits your ability to use any
type of "Universal" component, which does not exist.

Hi Debbie,
Most compaq's SODIMM slot is located on the bottom of the laptop
under a black cover.
If it's not located there, please give us the model number and we'll
look into it further.

I just replaced the chassis on a Gateway Solo 2000 - 5100 and cannot
get the keyboard to seat. How do you get the keyboard to attach in
the front?

Hi Joe,
Thanks for your advice about the plug-in to understand
Chinese/Japanese text. I've had a look around the Japanese IBM site,
but cannot find any reference to such a thing. Any more clues,
please?
Cheers,
Roger Mason, in St. Agnes, England
Hi Roger,
When I first visited that site my Browser prompted me to download a
plugin to read Chinese text. Try looking around the main Japan site,
hopefully it will propt you also at some point?
Joe
Hi Joe K,
Thanks for the two URL's. I had a look and the second one is for
the computer that I have. Unfortunately it appears to be all in
Japanese. A great pity as there was 220 pages of invaluable
information!!
Do you have any URL's in English?
Cheers,

Hi,
I have recently obtained an old IBM ThinkPad 345CS. Is it
possible to obtain an Owner's Manual? It would be very convenient
if there was a location on the Web with this document.
Any leads will be useful.
Roger
Welcome to the Laptop Repair forum! I created this forun for Laptop
repair techicians to have a place to research common and uncommon
issues with ANY brand of laptop.
Also, I know how hard it is sometimes very hard to locate parts for
older "Out of warranty" laptops. I'm hoping this will be a valuable
link to getting information of part suppliers across the world.
Thanks again,
Joe K.
