Subject: Toshiba Satellite 1955-S805 does not recognize WiFi
lkvee
Send Email Send Email

I just installed Windows XP and the Atheros chipset drivers from Toshiba's
support site. At no point did Windows recognize the existence of the internal
WiFi card. Programs outside of Windows (like the ones featured on Hiren's Boot
CD) also failed to find such a card (like Astra).

Only the amber wireless icon towards the front right panel of the laptop is
indicating the presence of a laptop card. According to the manual, WiFi is
operating if the icon is activated.

I'm also having trouble accessing the mini-PCI slot. I tried the memory slots,
and the only over cover addresses the heatsink and fan for the CPU.

Any thoughts on the internal wireless on this machine?

Thanks for reading.

Subject: HP Compaq nc6000 intermittent lock up on boot

i have a compaq nc6000 laptop P M 1.6ghz 1gb pc2100 ram that ocassionaly will lock up on boot. sometimes it will lock just past the bios start screen, sometimes just past the main windows desktop screen and then works fine on next boot. when it does boot i get a "device driver installation complete" screen which is blank. when it does lock up nothing will work, no keys, no beeps, even if i hold down any keys, i have to power down using power off button. i have since replaced the 60 gb hd which had bad sectors and replaced with new 60 gb and reinstalled ths o.s. no change. i stripped the laptop down to mainboard removed a cable that i believe connected the front l.e.d.s power, battery, dvd lights. it had a few stripped wires. the cable was close to the plastic of the speakers so i dont think it would have anything and if it did then it wouldnt work at all period. those lights do not work now. i can live with that. removed and reseated the memory tried different slots. did same with battery, dvd drive, etc. something in the bios maybe? i'll stop here for now.....thanks.

I have never seen a polarized scren on a laptop that needs a plastic
shield over it. Are you saying that if you remove the plastic stick-on,
then turn the leptop on that there is no image unless you hold the
plastic in front of the screen? Does the image only appear when you
hold the plastic at a certain angle, or can you rotate it and still see
the image? What make and model laptop is it?

looking for someone to tell me how i can fix the problem with my laptop.
hp says warranty has expired, hence no repairs offered. someone suggests a reflow, this is too technical for me to handle, another suggests a motherboard change, this is costly to do. my concern is the laptop still boot after leaving it for days, but starts freezing after sometime.my files and folders are still intact, everything is still ok except to just boot.

If there was an easy way to fix your laptop I'm sure HP would have
advised all those who have filed class action lawsuits against them how
to do it. But the sad fact is that this series of laptops have bad
motherboards, and there is no way for the average technician to repair
them. I would double check the serial number myuself at

couldn't quite understand your problem, however, it may be that your cpu fan is not working well enough to cool your processor. cpu fans are inexpensive to try.

Come on people, this laptop series has bad motherboards, class action
lawsuits, extended warranty issues. It is NOT going to be fixed by
cleaning or replacing a fan or any other simple process. A Google
search fo DV6000 lawsuits will give you links to all the bad news. Try
this one for starters.

I have one of these laptops and Ardell is correct on most of the news, I talked
with a couple of support people at HP and confirmed that the "extended" "free
fix" programs are limited at best. The general idea I was given is that the
warrenty was for 2 years from original purchase. So it only covered 1 year
beyond HP's warrenty. They are willing to fix the laptop however it would cost
around 350.00 just for a new motherboard that works (or so they say) Just
adding my thoughts on this subject.

If your problem is: you computer freezes periodically, you might run a hard drive diagnostic to ensure that it's not falling apart on you. Most machines give you the ability to do that from  within the bios. If not, the hard drive manufacturer probably has a tool you can use to test the drive.  It would probably be a good time to copy all your important information / pictures off onto external storage media.

I got the impression the end user was entirely sure the problem was related to the system board, and from the description of the problem, a 10.00 cpu fan may have been a good alternative to a 300.00 board they may not have needed.

I had a similar problem with a dv5219 laptops, and then I realized that if I supported the unit so that the incoming airflow was totally unrestricted and a positioned a fan near the unit, I had no problems.  I ordered and installed a fan (and will probably modify the base of the unit to allow better air flow).  The in coming air vent should have been placed on the SIDe of the unit verses the bottom.

i found an online guide on disassembling my toshiba r15 tablet.  i'm hesitant to pull the keyboard connector, it has the funkiest lock and i'm afraid to break it. i pulled the hard drive cable, and i thought i broke it, the ribbon comes out , the plastic part stays on the board. are the keyboard and touch pad the same way? even with a powerful magnifier, its tough to see.

assuming i get the keyboard out, shoud i try to boot it with the keyboard removed?

thanks

I'm thinking of a colleague who successfully rescued a Macbook Pro from liquid
damage (and we speculate it was coffee). He's in the market for a keyboard, as
some keystrokes won't be recognized. I think liquid can irreversibly damage
the tracings underneath.

I would also strongly advise yanking all power sources to that tablet, once
you've figured out your next steps. My colleague also used a "very hot" water
bath, and didn't mention vinegar. I've heard people use rubbing alcohol, too.

I hope I'm wrong about the keyboard.

I don't know if they are related, but in the last week I have had 2 of
the Dell M1330 series come here with motherboard issues relating the the
video card. It is just a large IC on the board, and evidently has
connection problems with the main board underneath. The connections are
just several hundred "dots" that all have to flow together during the
soldering process. Since the IC runs pretty hot, it is evidently
developing intermittant connections which either leads to the BSOD or no
action at all.

hi, sorry for all the previous posts.  i got the r15 tablet completely apart. i puuled the motherboard, and washed it in a mix of warm water and white vinegar. i dried it with compressed air, then put it in a barely heated oven for a while, to really dry it out.  its all together, and now the screen comes up nice. after a while , i get an IDE 0 error, and it says press F1, i believe this is because the CMOS battery was dead, and all the settings are gone. at least, i hope thats all it is.the locking device for the hard dr5ive ribbon cable is a very flimsy, scary kind of thing, i hope thats ok.  the keyboard is still out of the unit. can i plug in an external keyboard, or do i need a working keyboard to go further?  i have heard somewhere that after a spill, you can put keyboards in a dish washer to clean them, then dry them real well and they work.  true?  i'm stalled here, whats my next step?

thanks for your patience with all my posts.

mike

I had a similar situation at home before I started working on laptops. We put in a claim on our homeowner's policy, and it paid for the fix less our deductable. That's an option to consider.

If insurance is not an option, you can try flushing the board with hot water. You must remove the CMOS battery and completely remove board from the case. The board must be left to dry for at least a day or two. The keyboard may or may not be salvageable and you can try flushing it out, but it ought to be reasonable in cost if you have to replace it.

my daughter has a toshiba tablet laptop , model R15-S822 . her boyfriend spilled a scotch and soda on it, and now it doesnt work. when it tried to boot, the toshiba logo appears, flickering rapidly.

i have had success cleaning circuit boards on other equipment using a water/vinegar solution.  i'm assuming the keyboard is probably contaminated, maybe the MB too. can keyboards be cleaned?  i hate to give up on this unit, its pretty cool with the tablet feature. how should i procede?

thanks,mike

Congratulations. That is a rare feat, getting a contaminated mobo
working again. I usually wash them in warm water, then blow dry them
with compressed air, then I submerse them in Isopropyl (Rubbing) alcohol
which displaces any remaining water, then blow dry them again and put it
in the sun to dry. Or a barely warm oven if needed. Make sure the
ribbon cable for the hard drive is seated properly. The locking
mechanism for it may be the same as for the keyboard. You have to lift
the "Wedge" up which will release the cable. When you put it back,
insert the cable all the way and make sure it is "square" and seated
properly, then push the wedge down to lock the cable against the
contacts. That is probably why you are getting the IDE 0 error. You
should be able to plug in an external keyboard, assuming you have a
regular mouse type jack. If not, try a USB keyboard, although some
older units do not detect a usb keyboard well and you would then have to
put the regular keyboard back in it.

Washing the keyboard is probably not going to work. I have had some
success with rubbing alcohol, but often it will make some of the
internal layers gummy.

Hello smarter than me people. (:

I have a Dell inspiritation 600m, that just stopped working. i thought it was
the hard drive so I got another one. Here is what it does. When i turn the power
on, it lights up the green lights at the top,( the ones to the left of the power
bitton), they stay lit for a few seconds, nothing on the screen, then go out.
That's all i can get.

Any advise would be most appreciaded.
Thanks, and stay safe.
Joe

Hi Joe. Your computer goes through a sequence called POST, for Power On
Self Test first, where a small program stored right on the motherboard
looks the system over for the processor, memory, and other devices that
might be plugged into it. If you presss F2 or Del, usually, right at
the start of this test, you will get a screen that lists all these
devices and you can change things like the time & date, boot up
sequence, etc etc. As you can see, even if you don't have a hard drive
plugged in at all, your computer will still go through this test first
thing, and eventually if all is well THEN it will start looking for a
hard drive with an operating system on it that it can boot from.

In rare cases a bad hard drive will cause the POST to stall while the
unit trys and trys and trys to figure out what is that thing that is
plugged into the hard drive cable, but in those cases simply unplugging
the hard drive will allow the unit to POST and look to the CD or USB
port for a bootable device. And since you replaced the drive already,
this is not going to be the case in your situation.

So the fact that you never even get the POST screen indicates that your
unit has a problem that is very fundamental, most likely a defective
motherboard. A bad hard drive would not cause problems for several more
miles down the road until the unit actually gets around to looking for a
bootable device.
