Yes you can transfer your data from the harddrive but I would scan the harddrive for virus before moving the data so your laptop doesn't become infected.  Any programs you need you'll have to install them as copied programs from one hard drive to another won't run.

Have a HP dv6809wm laptop that freezes at the HP splash screen. Sometimes I can
press any key on the key board and then it will finish booting into windows.
Checked the hardware and all test pass. Checked the operating system for virus
found a rootkit in explorer. Did a system restore but same problem. Unit stays
at the HP logo with the function keys listed at the bottom of the screen. I can
not always get pass this screen by pressing any key on the keyboard. Sometimes
I have to power down and power back up, then pressing a key on the keyboard lets
me finish booting into windows.
Anyone experience this problem ? What was done to correct/fix it?

  Your help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Before I give this laptop a burial I would like to see if there is any hope for
it. Laptop is running XP We have used it as a spare w/o any problems.
We use a wireless card inserted in the side to connect to the internet.
Last week when I tried to connect it would not. I thought the wireless card had
gone bad and tried another one still no connection. I tried a direct connection
plugging the E cable directly into the laptop. Nothing. A friend mention that
winsock could be broken. Never heard of this. Any suggestions?

I would try some boot CD's and run the unit. HP DV 6000 series with the
NVidia chipsets have had graphics chipset and heat issues all along. You
can google NVidia laptop class action lawsuit and look at HP's web site for
info on the models that they actually did an extended warranty program on
due to the issues. Many of the newer units also have the same BGA chipset
reflow issues even though HP, Dell and others claim the problem has been
solved and there no longer is an issue.

IF none of the connections work, your friend may be correct. You can
download a nice repair tool called winsockfix.exe and run it at
http://www.lotsofgadgets.com/home/Downloads/74.aspx Save it to a thumb
drive, then transfer it to the computer with the problem. Double click
the .exe file, and it will do a couple of things, then reboot the
computer. When it get the computer back up and running, see if the
connections now work. You may also have to open an Internet Explorer
window, click Tools, then Internet Options, then Connections, then LAN
settings and make sure ONLY the box by Automatically detect Proxy
settings has a mark in it.

These units have motherboard defects. Basically, the Video card, which
in this case is just a big IC soldered directly on the motherboard,
develops bad connections which cause intermittent operation. The IC in
question has about 200 tiny little "dots" underneath it, and when the
board is manufactured, all those dots have to line up exactly with the
"dots" on the motherboard during the heating process when the solder
liquefies and connects all the components together. Evidently the solder
flow process used in these motherboards was not correctly controlled,
resulting in poor connections, which break loose over time due to
stress, heating, cooling, etc. When one or more of these 200 connections
breaks loose, you have an intermittent condition, and the video may or
may not work properly.

I have set up my own reflow oven arrangement and have re-heated dozens
of these boards successfully, which is about $200 cheaper than replacing
them, but it is not something you can do yourself. But that is why your
unit is not working reliably.

True it's the solder joints, due to using lead free solder.

Yep the combination of BGA mount, expansion/contraction from heat/cool, flexing
and the lead free paste that may or may not be heated fully at the manufacturer.
They used lead years ago for the strength, conductivity (when mixed with tin)
and the flexibility.

We can thank our psychotic fear of naturally occurring materials for much of our
present day problems to include the recent outbreak of bed bugs that won't die.
Rather than license those that use DDT and limiting it's use they instead took
it totally out of use.

Take the lid apart and tilt the LCD panel forward enough to unplug the
cable and remove the panel so you can read the part number on the back
of it. Then go to Ebay and hunt a replacement panel down and find the
best price. That price is the minimum you will have to spend to get rid
of that strip along the bottom of the panel, because there is no way to
repair it. You have to replace the panel if it is not something you want
to live with.

try using a usb split cable.... meaning use 2 usb ports to power one external drive. For the usb thumb drive I am not sure what may be causing that. Perhaps a bad drive, but if the port was bad it would be for all.

Hi,
I keep a cheap USB 2.0 PCI card and a PCMCIA USB adapter available as well. I
have damaged USB ports being clumsy, and a reliable backup card is always a plus
for me. Just a thought. The parts are cheap on Ebay or at Geeks, etc.

I have better luck with a powered USB adapter for harddrives__the kind that uses
a 'wall wart' transformer for power in addition to a USB port. These also are
cheap__Ebay, Geeks, etc. Double USB ports work as well but are more limited in
wattage than the powered units as I recall.

Adapters and spare cards always pay off well for me in the long run, and the
space required is negligible.
Good luck,
Fallsoff

You won't be using that PCMCIA card for long, those and the express card slots
in laptops are going the way of parallel and serial ports on laptops - gone.
Last new laptop I worked on had USB ports only so if there was a problem where
USB failed to function due to a dead controller or bad shorted connector you
have only the option of replacement of the motherboard. PCs are going the same
way and most have nearly no slots for add in cards anymore.

Thanks Russ,
I am aware of that, but I use older hardware and I like the diversity. I should
have qualified with that statement in the post.
Best,
fallsoff

You and I both - I dislike the new machines that have been coming out since
about 2006 with less and less each year. I use a Dell Inspiron 6000 but I have
to use a USB to serial for serial port work on phones and routers, and a
parallel pcmcia for work on printers. Had to make sure I found one DOS
compatible as well as Windows since many times I have to do firmware from a DOS
floppy.

Bought it with a cracked display for $25 from a guy experiencing hard times, put
a used $45 display in it and been using it since. My previous, a HP ZE4400 had
all the ports and even external KB and mouse but the wife has that. I did have
an Acer 5002WLMI but it was too big and the glossy display drove me nuts on the
road in the laptop mount so my son got it for college.

Nice thing about the Dell is I was able to plug in a bluetooth module in the
side pocket of the battery area and for $10 had full bluetooth built in. Came in
nice when I needed to tether to my cellphone for internet on the road. No need
for it now but it comes in handy to work with cellphones to load ring tones and
download photos from them.

Maybe the HP has a USB port with version 1, and not 2.0, I ran accross this on
a couple computers I have, I bought a new cared and poped in slot, and installed
software, everything works now...
