Make sure you have the 41E version of desktop and cross your fingers.
It isn't supported by Vista and doesn't usually behave and play nice but
some people have got it to work. I've also heard a few people have tried
the newer Vista compatible desktops from a Tungsten and have had success.

There was an after market or 3rd party software that cloned the LD
or backed it up under Vista but I can't think of what it was right now.

Not much help but I haven't had my coffee today ;-]

I hope that there's still some of you out there and someone can answer
me.

I just decided to get a LifeDrive as I've been using my Zire 71 for
years and still love it, but wanted to dabble with a "larger" capacity
machine, and for me, I'd rather have my PDA separated from my cell phone
as none of the newer cell phones really appeal to me.

But anyways, my question is... bluetooth keyboards, which one works?

I've seen that the Palm 3245WW doesn't state to be compatible with it,
BUT, as far as the images are showing me, this keyboard is identical to
the "Freedom" model which states that it is compatible with Palm OS5
machines.

So can anyone tell me about this? is there a difference? could I use the
Freedom drivers if the Palm ones are limited per devices?

Fouquet55 - were you successful?  I was not able to access the link on the reply to your original message.  My lifedrive 'crashed' and I just had the harddrive replaced, but do not know where the original install CD is - My lifedrive will boot, but I am missing software that enables me to hotsync (etc); attempts to 'get going' result in a message to reinstall the original CD on my computer ...  If you found that software, where did you locate it?
Thanks!

Susan

Just go to palms support web site and download the desktop software. 4.14E I think is the last version made for the LD
That will get you connected to the PC. The only software than comes on the disk are a few add ons. You should have
documents2go and ptunes that plays music on your LD now. Those and the system files such as hotsync and a few
others should have been installed into the hidden restore directory of the drive. When you do a hard reset they should
have reinstalled. Those you can upgrade a bit from the companies web sites.

What you won't get is the lifedrive manager and one other thing that escapes me at the moment.  Both are in the handy
but not needed category. For instance I never bothered with the LD manager after a few tries as it was a pain. I would just
use the drive mode to move stuff or just copy stuff direct to the sd card.

I thought there was a download available for the cd. Not from palm they wanted $10. If nothing else I'm sure it can be uploaded
again.

I'd be ever so appreciative if one of us figures out how to solve this issue
too.

Similar issues here, forced to use Outlook/Enterprise Blackberry at the office
but using SwitchSync Ex w/ my Palm Tx (used to have the same issues w/ my LD as
well) to sync w/ both Outlook and the Palm Desktop. I find the Palm Desktop
interface much more user friendly to manage my day to day schedule, phone
contacts, etc., but do use the office Blackberry's phone and email capabilities.

Even after the initial sync and I go thru the Outlook calendar and delete all
the duplicate entries, some of them seem to come back again and again? Any and
all hints greatly appreciated.

Subject: [ LifeDrive ] Synchronization issues with the BlackBerry

Don't be afraid, I'm writing this post to the right group. Here goes.

For those who have followed my posts over the few couple of weeks, you are aware
that upper management in my organization have decided to provide us each with a
BlackBerry. The tell the truth, I'm not too crazy about this new technology, but
that's not the essence of my post.

Our BBs use the BlakBerry Enterprise Server that allow for instant replication
of our schedules, mails, tasks, etc to our mobile from our Outlook account. So
far not a problem. I insist on keeping my LD because, aside from the phone, that
fills the need to have mobile computing. I could care less for e-mail reaching
me when I'm in a meeting or going to the johns.

Problems started to creep up when I synch my LD with my laptop. If I remove
agenda items or tasks from my Outlook account, they are put right back by the
next Hot Synch. Sometimes I even get duplicate or triplicate copies of the same
appointment or task. The worse kind seem to be the meetings scheduled by an
invitation from a colleague. They are sticky as hell and seem to reproduce
themselves faster than I can remove them.

I really want to keep synchronizing my LD with my agenda and tasks (and
contacts) because I can't get used to the BB (Storm) keyboard and tiny screen
(and no decent external keyboard, and not decent word processor, and...)

Anyway, hope you catch my drift and have some suggestions to offer.

regards,

Maurice

Ok, for the past month now I have used the third unit that was made available to
me by virtue of having colleagues switching to BlackBerry, them fools.

Anyhow, the unit in question is now fitted with my CF card and has been pretty
stable. No random activation of program or anything of the sort. It must have
had something to do with screen or the re-assembly as suggested by Phil.

Thanks for your help everyone.

PS Expect another post shortly about resolving conflicts with the BlackBerry.

OK, here's an experiment I'm attempting for the next little: I imaged the
contents of my CF card onto one of the MicroDrives, and put the Microdrive back
into one of the "faulty" units. I'll use it for a little while and see what
happens. If the issue creeps up again, it must have to do with the image I have
(software issue), because every other option will have been tried out. However,
if it does not occur for say, one week, then I'll conclude my CF card is faulty.
Are my assumptions correct?

Mine does this as well but the only cause I can find was little bits of grit or grime
under the edges of the buttons/pads. I cleaned mine as best I could without disassembly
and that stopped about 90% of it.  Usually on mine I could at least tell which key was the
problem as it would be slightly stiff. The first time I had this occur it was from am edge
of a screen protector being just slightly in the wrong place so that would be another
thing to check.

And other than draining some of the battery it never hurt any data or documents on mine.
Most annoying bit was when it did this at night it was light having a night light flashing
off and on.

Hello everyone,

I will try to describe the best I can, an erratic behaviour my Palm(s) have started to show a few months ago.
It can happen anytime the unit is turned on, without any specific provoking causes that I can tell, and it renders the unit unusable. The only solution is soft reset. And event then, it may re-appear right away. Here's what happens.

The display starts to show operations I did not initiate. As if someone (something) was tapping various area of the screen at random, starting an app, opening menus, entering random characters. It even happened while on the cradle once. My main issue is that it can start any app (for example Calendar) and enter random appointments or worse yet, erase existing ones. It could be just any other app too.

I must say that I have replaced my Microdrive for a CF card a few months ago.

My first reaction was that the Motherboard had gone bezerk. I had a spare unit, so I patiently opened the two, swapped the MBs and for a week it worked beautifully. Then it started again. So I decided that maybe it was the screen that was causing the trouble. So again, I opened the two units, and swapped the displays. This time the problem re-appeared within a day or two. I really was at wits end. So I though to myself, maybe it's the case. By now I was getting to be an expert at opening up my units. I swapped the two cases, at no avail. The erratic behaviour was still present.
Just two days ago, I got my hands on a third unit, this one almost new. The previous user told me it was in perfect condition, operating like a charm. I know I can trust him. So I yanked my CF card out of the faulty unit, I put it the new one. It worked well for 2 days, but this morning, I think it started again.

I'm really at the end of the rope, and I am beginning to think that the real culprit is the CF card. Has anyone ever encountered such bizarre behaviour, or anything linked to using a CF card as a replacement for the MicroDrive?

Sorry for the long post, and thanks for your help.

Maurice

PS: If you are wondering how I got to own 3 Lifedrive, my organization is going the Blackberry route. Other people's units are being retired. I insisted on keeping my LD, since it allows me to do things my BB won't, for example, work on a Word Document, with a IR keyboard using Word To Go. I'm not a convert to BB, far form it too.

Are you leaving the wireless, bluetooth or infrared turned on when not in use? It may be getting info from other devices like one of those BB's when it is close enough.

I had this same problem. I also got new batteries, but to no avail. The Battery would not charge even though the light lit up indicating that the operation was going. Finally I charged MY battery in my wife's LD and transferred it back to mine fully charged and it worked for a day, but when it ran down I had the identical problem again. I guessed that the ribbon cable was mucked up or the charging protocol was screwed up on the main board. I purchased a plug module/cable assembly from one of the parts sources. This includes the cradle plug, the headphone jack, the hot keys, and all kinds of other stuff, plus the ribbon cable which runs about two or three inches and plugs into the Mother Board.
This replacement operation is pretty nasty, and requires detail work and patience. It must have taken me two hours, and the headphone jack was a micron out of position and refused to plug in when the assembly was done. Little bastard.
The new assembly worked though. Then I tried to "fix" the defective one. That did _not_ work. Those ribbons are nasty little critters when they fail.
Where the fail point is and why it fails, I have no idea.

Phil

my battery (i think it was my battery) went out and i had to purchase a new one. once the new one arrived and i put it in, the life drive came on and i was able 2 do some things with it. once i turned it off and put it on the cradle to charge overnight, now i have the same problem. it will not turn on, and the charging light stays red. any ideas?

I'm not 100% sure I didn't change the name on mine but it also shows up under
prefs network. This is how you select your prefered network connection. If you
are already able to connect to the net and get email etc then you can ignore it
Can you do that or do you have no wifi connection at all?

Once you have Hotsync running and have "network" enabled.
Start it, right clock on the icon in the toolbar, left click on
network.

The rest assumes you have it already working on your network
ie you can get email or see webpages etc.

On your life drive start hotsync, tap the blue hotsync tab or the
options button. open Primary PC Setup.  Put the ip number of the
pc you are hotsyncing to ie 192.168.2.10 a subnet mask usually
255.255.255. 0. I don't think the name is needed. Thats it.

Now to switch back and forth from using the cable or the wireless.
Tap the Local (cable or cradle) or Network so it is highlighted blue.
Under the hotsync icon tap the services box. Tap where it says
"services" scroll down and select wifi. Tap done

Now you should be back at the main hotsync window. The network
tab/area should be blue. If thats the case tap the hotsync "button" area
and it will connect over the net and do your hotsync.

This isn't as fast as the cable but it a lot handier.
