Of course not connected AT THE SAME TIME. In sequence. In effect you need to
rename the target with the original device's ID, perform full sync of
memory-held PIM data to the desktop; disconnect and next connect with the
newly-renamed target unit "masquerading as" the original. Perform restore to
this one, then disconnect and rename it back with your previous ID. Elementary,
me dear Naunton ;-))

Here's Palm instruction on how to rename a device:

Surely someone must have made a PIM archive copier or some such thing.

Haven't heard of any specific "PIM-copier." The proscribed way of doing it is to
sync/backup your originator unit to the desktop, and then restore it to target

Try a different cable. I ended up buying a universal base and that cured it on mine.

The Athena contacts don’t make a good connection after a few years of use.  If you

play around with it a bit and not quite push it in the connector you should be able

to get a connection. When you plug them in the weight of the cable just slightly

pulls the connector at an angle (as you lie the thing on its back) and that’s the

actual culprit.  I had originally thought that usb port had been wonky or the usb

end of the cable or the port had problems.

The problem is that if you breathe think or look at it, it tends to disconnect. Or it

does it just as the file is supposed to finish ;-]. When it gets a bit worse it won’t want

to charge either.  The uni base station charger/data  will work as it is a bit more stable

and the weight of the LD helps to push the connectors tighter.

It is probably the other end of the cable that plugs into the LD. That port is the worst engineered piece of junk I've ever seen. Once it fails you can toss your LD and go looking for a Pocket PC.

Have you installed the LD softwareon that computer? If not, you have
to in order to "see" the LD.

If you have used it successfully with this computer in the past, you
might need to do a reinstall, or it could be that you have a loose
connection between the LifeDrive and the sync cable. . .

Hi Leslie,

Lets start with some more info please?

Has this always been the case, or did it happen after you made some change to
the device or installed any new software to it?

Have you installed the Palm LD update, I believe it is called 2.0 or something.

Are you syncing the LD using the Palm supplied USB cable, by bluetooth, or what?

Unplug it and stick it into another usb. windows should then detect the “new” device and

away you go. Annoyingly happens all the time on my Tosh XP laptop and the odd time on

my 2kpro machine. The 2K machine requires a reboot the odd time before it behaves

if switching ports doesn’t work.

You can also get this if windows isn’t set to recognize plug n play devices.

A while back I was bragging about fixing my LiveDrive. Well, that's what I get. What I deserve. Failure.
It turns out that the problem with the LD not charging was not due to the loose connector at the bottom, although that is probably what "caused" the difficulty. The ribbon cable which connects the Hot Sync socket with the Mother Board was actually beginning to tear away from the socket. It is soldered there with some tiny connections. The connections looked fine under casual observation, but looking at them under a stereo microscope showed some fissures between the solder and the tiny steel prong where the main power flows.

I have replaced this same ribbon cable on my wife's LifeDrive due to the loss of some of the keyboard controls. The work required to swap this out is probably the singular most difficult task in repairing the LifeDrive. There are several spots where the ribbon and related components (Headphone jack, Keyboard activation sensors, and the socket at the base of the LD ) _all_ have to be removed and replaced. Some of them are glued to the body of the LD, so cannibalizing them from "dead" LD's is a potential hazard from the possibility of physical damage occurring from the force required for removal. I was lucky enough to acquire a factory new ribbon assembly from http://www.usedpdaparts.com/Lifedrive.html     It is not listed on their LD page but I contacted them directly and they were kind enough to hunt one up for me.

This loose socket problem is the actual cause of the failure. The socket it just screwed into the case using high quality torx screws. Just using it cause it to eventually loosen. The glued ribbon is adhered right up to the point where it is attached to the socket. Any movement of the socket begins to rip the solder points loose.

Bad design.

I’ve had something sim happen to mine but it went away when I bought a universal charging cradle.  I had thought my problem was from the

side contacts in the Athena connector not making proper contact. The cradle did stop it but perhaps reading this it is only from the weight of

the LD pushing on it.

I guess I should crack the case and check but I would never do that cuz its still under warrantee ;-]

Nope would never do that ;-]

Dave

I don't know if anyone else has run into this. The other day my LD battery was running down, so I plugged it in to charge. The screen indicated that it was charging, but the battery still kept depleting. This continued until it had run down completely, and the LD died. I tried several charger power cables which are lying around the house. No change. It remained dead.

I thought that the battery had given up the ghost. I swapped the battery with my wife's LD and my LD began running again. I plugged the "dead" battery into my wife's LD and tested it to see if it would charge. It woke up again in about fifteen minutes and eventually made it to full charge in a several hours. Meanwhile the fully charged battery, now in my LD, gradually ran down and refused to recharge. As the swapped battery got closer and closer to death I became frustrated enough to play around with the connection on the bottom of the unit. I happened to notice (just by accident) that if I partially pulled out the charging plug it actually seemed to increase battery charge level for a few seconds before reverting to the original situation. Looking closer I noticed that the socket itself was sliding a very small amount when I pushed or pulled the charging adaptor. Opening up the case, and looking inside I found the socket to be very slightly loose. About 1 mm movement. I tightened the two torx screws holding the socket to the case and the problem seemed to disappear.

I don't know why this would make a difference. The torx screws don't hold the socket together, they just lock it in a fixed position. And why does the LD screen show that it's charging, when it really isn't? A theory that I have, but cannot verify, is that the socket was pressing very lightly against the foil around the battery itself. Maybe a protruding solder connection was brushing against the battery? A short was developing between the socket and the ground shield of the battery. The charge voltage may have been running to ground instead of into the battery itself? I wasn't about to experiment with it to find out for sure. What if I caused a more serious short?

Just to be on the safe side I put a small bit of electrical tape along the lower edge of the battery to insulate it from the socket. There was no insulation there. _Now_ there is.

Thanks Terry,

actually it did work! The only thing that wasn't copied over is the
Websphere Java engine. I use it to get Opera Mini going. Everything
else was copied, no problems. Some of my precious Doc to Go files
proved a little harder to copy over, but it was just a matter of
insisting some more.. I had to fight with my Blue Tooth connection to
get it to synch with my laptopn, but I figured it out. I'm all set.

Thanks to all.

Maurice

I don't use Windows, but a Mac where Lifedrive Manager is neither present, nor
needed - Mac Finder (the GUI-shell client) already provides the same
hierarchical-view capability. That said, when"Handheld overvrites computer"
radio button selected in HotSync app, the entire HDD gets updated/ copied onto
the desktop HD, into a directory that's embedded within the default Palm files
library.

The exact, copied off Terminal, path is (case is SIGNIFICANT):

/Users/[Mac user name]/Documents/Palm/Users/[Palm user name]/Internal\ Hard\
Drive\ Backup/

(backslashes "\" are Terminal's additions to metify next character, a space).
This overwrites any previous versions of files in the leaf hierarchy AND adds
new files from the handheld. Ie. no manual backup of HDD is required or needed,
files are individually readable on the Mac, if depisited in, from end user's
point of view, an awkward location (=that's where Aliased directories come in).

Believe it or not, Palm support was right for once. They just failed to give you important details. What you want to do is make sure EVERYTHING is backed up to your hard drive -- especially your Lifedrive's HD. Before you do your last hotsync click on the hotsync icon in your system tray (I'm assuming you're using Windows - if not you may have to tweak these instructions. However the operations are the same). Go to "custom" and change every conduit action to read "Handheld overwrites desktop." Then, using the Lifedrive Manager, copy everything on your LD HD to your desktop/laptop hard drive. After this you are ready to start up your "new" Lifedrive. Before you do, complete a hard reset on the new one and make certain you use the exact user name you have on the old one. This will insure that all your programs will run. Once all this is complete, hotsync the new LD and you will have a clone of your old LD. If you have a lot of stuff crammed into your old LD (like I do) this last hotsync might take a looooong time. Do this when you have other things to do and check back in an hour.

Good luck,
Terry
