Does anyone have any pre-compiled binaries for the LS2 (mips)?

I've been trying to get PHP installed with GD support, but I keep
running into library after library that is missing. As I kept
downloading libraries to compile I finally ran into the lack of the
'cc' compiler (for libpng). I'm currently working on converting the
makefile to use gcc, but if someone has done all this it would be
greatly appreciated if you can post the binaries for any libraries.

Thanks!

I have successfully turned my LinkStation II with openlink to run
Gallery 2. In my case, I just link cc to gcc.

I have now disasembled my LS2 and gained access to all partitions
(fix_ext2_magic now seems to work) is there anything that anyone can
sugest I could do to identify what is not running?

Current status is that my box currently appears to boot and then
aproximatly every 5 minutes the activity light flashes and there is a
short period of activity, is this some sort of watchdog or bootup
timeout interveining and forcing a reboot?

I have found a file called log.tar.gz containing a load of logs runing
up to the date if all went wrong anyone think they can extract
anything useful from it?

currently var seems to sym link to /mnt/ram/var is that just because
I'm in Knoppix? does this mean that all logs get writen to the ram disk?

Can I get any sort of logs out of the LS2 in its current state?

Help!!!

TIA

Subject: Installation of Freelink onto a Linkstation HD-H160LAN v2.05 box

Hello,

Due to a cat related linkstation failure I found myself in the
position where I had to purchase another linkstation.

I purchased a Linkstation HD-H160LAN which came with v2.05 firmware
and immediately tried to install the Freelink powerpc_hdhlan-1.11
firmware onto it.

I run the installation utility and it says no linkstation is found on
the network despite me being able to access it via the web interface
(no firewall on this machine)

Is it possible to install Freelink onto this box with the firmware
that it's running?

If it's not, are there any other options I have other than returning
the unit?

You can't install the PPC based firmware on a MIPS based Linkstation.

Subject: Linkstation v2.00 and Netgear MP101 issues!

I wonder if anyone can help me with the following. About 6 months
ago I bought a Netgear MP101 and set it up with my home server
running Windows 2000. This pairing worked fine and I was very happy
with it but I was concerned about the power being consumed running
the server 24/7.
Whilst checking out the Twonkyvision website one day, I discovered
that their software would let me service the MP101 via a Buffalo
Linkstation and so duly bought the 120Gb version and sold the
server. I had no problems setting the Linkstation up with my home
network and set up shared folders for everyone in my household to
use.
So far so good, but when I finally got around to setting it up with
the MP101 I ran into a brick wall. All attempts to telnet into it
failed and after hours researching online it appears that
Twonkyvision will only work with firmware versions below 1.45 (from
memory) and that it won't work with version 2 or later.
Is there any way that I can get it to work as a music server with my
MP101 or am I stuck just using it as network storage? If this is the
case then I'm going to be mightily upset, particularly as there is
no mention of this restriction on the Twonkyvision site!
Any help gratefully received!

As you probably discovered from your research, if the firmware version
of your LS is 2.xx, then you have a mips based box which is
incompatible with the ppc based 1.xx firmware (so you can't exploit
the pre 1.45 firmwares with telnet).

However, it is possible to install twonky on the mips boxes (I've just
finished doing that to mine) - take a look at the LSII hacking how-to
at http://www.geishuettner.de/docs/Linkstation/

Getting root access/telnet is a bit more fiddly then with the 1.xx
firmware types & note that you'll also need to use the mips version of
the twonky linkstation binaries.

The easiest way to gain telnet is to install openlink, goto

I've managed to succesfully upgrade to v2.05 but still can't telnet
into it. I'm using Windows XP Pro and type "o 192.168.0.2" but get
the error message 'Connecting to 192.168.0.2...Could not open

I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

First off I want to say how amazingly helpful and awesome this yahoo group is.
I've got a LSII
and if it werent for this group and the linkstation wiki, I would have a mostly
useless box
sitting on my desk.

I'm a mac user and I installed the newest Netatalk (2.0.3) to be able to copy
files with long file
names to an appletalk share(which is absolutely necessary when copying my iTunes
library). I
used the instructions that were on this group which got Netatalk installed and
running, but
for some reason it will only work with guest access. None of the users and
passwords I set up
through the Linkstation webpage are working. Does anyone know what might be
going wrong
or what I could do to try and debug this?

And on that same vein, I was wondering if it would be possible to change the
name of the
AppleTalk server. Going through the Linkstation webpage it makes the server name
in all
caps, which is horribly ugly.

thanks,
alan

I'm trying to get my LSII running Openlink to be as mac friendly as possible and
to that extent
I've installed the mDNSResponder package. I followed the instructions that are
in the how to
on this site which are a little outdated as it is still calling it Rendevous
instead of Bonjour. But
that shouldnt make much of a difference.

Anyway, I followed the instructions and I've got the program compiled and
running, but it
isnt being seen by my mac. I'm using a program called Bonjour Browser to look at
all the
Bonjour services on my network.

Does anyone have any info on where I can look to debug this? From Apple's
developer site I
couldnt find much info on how mDNSResponder is supposed to be setup. Most of the
info I
found was for software developers on the mac side of things, not for embedded
systems.

thanks,
alan

Did you go to linkstationwiki.org and install the
openlink version of the OS? This will allow you to
telnet in and then complete the other steps spoecified
in the instructions.

hours to transfer 23gb of date at 100-based T. That's far worse than
10-based T.

Anyone else have any success tweaking the performance of this thing?

Yes, I now have Openlink 2.05 installed and telnet is working. I
inadvertantly installed the stock firmware the first time - d'oh!

Alan,

I experienced the same with mDNSResponder. Discard it and install howl,
following the
instructions in <http://linkstationwiki.org/forum/2_359_0.html>. Also make sure
you have
netatalk 2.x installed!

Cheers,

My /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default contains lines like:

/mnt/mt-daapd "mt-daapd" allow:user1,
/mnt/opt "opt" allow:user1,user2,user3,

Make sure the users are permitted to use these directories, on the OS level!

Adjust /etc/hosts, /etc/hostname, and /etc/howl/mDNSResponder.conf once it is
installed.

Hi,

Has there been any more progress (or help needed) on getting this
working with the LS2.

My fan is beginning to make my LS sound more like a jet engine than
a 'discrete' storage device.

If any more info is needed, am more than happy to supply

Thanks

Andy

I have a new laptop computer (yipee!), but I have not been able to
access my linkstation using its name. I use the IP Setup and Client
Utilities, and they identify the name of my buffalo, its size, etc.
When I click on Open, nothing happens! If I enter \\MyBuffaloName into
Explorer, I get an error. If I enter \\192.168.1.200 (the IP address I
hardwired), everything works fine. How do I get my laptop to resolve
the name of my buffalo? I should add that my desktop computer has no
problems (which is also running XP-SP2). Thanks!

I'm by no means a Windows expert; but are all machines in the same workgroup?

Why not just add an entry in the host file on the
laptop?

Hi,

i searched a long time for an NAS with enough ressources to run things
like rsync or dnsmasq. Now, first i bought an ALLNET ALL6200 but this
device hasn't enough memory and adding memory via swap isn't possible
because the MIPS-CPU doesn't have an memory unit (MMU).
Yet i found the LinkStation / Kuro-Box and many posts from statisfied
people. I've now some questions which i hope that someone can answere
it for me:

- I'd read that i can run Gentoo on an Linkstation; Runs Gentoo only
on the PPC-Linkstation Version or is also an Version for the
MIPS-Linkstation available?
- Is there an difference in speed between PPC- and MIPS-Version ?
- Is there an "easy" way, maybe get an Kuro-Box in Germany ?
- Is there an way, get an PPC-Linkstation (if Gentoo runs only on it)
in Germany? I know, the PPC-Version is the old one...

Thanks for every help!

Hello
I have a Linkstation II (MIPS) and I use a Dynamic DNS service at
www.dtdns.com

My LSII and my PC's are behind a router, does anyone know of a program
or script I can run that will be able to find the public IP address of
the router / modem and publish it to the dtdns service?

Cheers

Umm, are you sure you scanned your LS and not your XP box?

Why don't you use the update clients at http://www.dtdns.com/index.cfm?
fuseaction=info.clients

However, I have never used dtdns.com. My LS2 is running noip happily.

www.no-ip.com

I use the official update client which is also available there. With
a little modification to the script, it can be started/stopped like
other daemon.

Be sure you have openlink installed to compile the program.
