Getting Debian running on LSII is very easy. Just run a script, and
everything's done.

I used to run Openlink, but turned to run Debian just a week ago.
When I was on the openlink, I get lighttpd and pmwiki, and document
everything there.

However, I lose nearly all my data when I play with debian. So, the
article is lost I am afraid.

Basically, I get samba running by following steps:

1. Openlink
2. Development tools from the linkstationwiki
3. compile samba at /usr/local, pid in /var/run
4. backup the old smb.conf
5. symbolic link to /usr/local/etc/smb.conf in the old directory
6. write a script using awd to change smb.conf on every boot

I've got the standard Open 0.52b and only lately have I had problems with
day/date. When I
try to set the day/date/time with the web interface, LSII reboots and I still
have 12/31/01 put
back as the time. I've tried setting hardware and software time manually using
linux and
when I reboot, it goes back to 12/31/01. However, if I let 12/31/01 continue
for a few days
and the LS scheduler powers down/power up the drive at appropriate times, I
start at the
proper number days/hours/minutes from 12/31/01. Anyone got a clue what's
happening?

Hi there-

I can't get through to download
http://www.germanistik.uni-bonn.de/ab/downloads/openvpn-lzo-ls1-v3.tar.gz
as required in step 2. Is there a new or alternate location for the file?

I'm eager to try this setup on my LS I.

I have not been able to FTP into the LS from outside our LAN. I've
scoured the help guides and this message board and seem to have
everything set up right, but I always get a "timeout" when trying to
FTP from the internet. We can do everything internally over the
network and using Local IP as FTP.

I'm using a D-Link Router that I set up to allow ports 20-21 to FTP to
the local IP address of the LS and I set up the NAT (virtual server)
to forward ports 20 and 21 to the local IP address of the LS. I
enabled FTP on the LS and set the IP address to a static address and
enabled the gateway address to the local IP address of the D-Link
router. But when I FTP to the WAN address from the internet (with
username/password or anonymously) I get nothing. I'm stuck... any
advice out there?

If your FTP client is trying to connect to the LS in
"passive" mode, try switching to "active" (or vice-versa.)

I too am getting the same issue, however, after some time, about 2 or
3 minutes, the server will prompt me for a username and password.
However, when I enter them, I am told that they are incorrect. I have
reset them and double and triple checked that they are correct.
Same result. I'll try the Active/Passive suggestion made in a
subsequent message. But the fact that it gets as far as the prompt
makes me wonder if the problem is with the FTP server on the LS.
Thanks for the help,

That sounds like the FTP server may be trying to do a
reverse lookup before prompting you to login.

If you're using ProFTPd on the server try adding these
two lines to the proftp.conf file and then restart the
FTP daemon:

UseReverseDNS off
IdentLookups off

If you're using some other FTP daemon then you'll have
to check the documentation for the appropriate settings.

I am using the built in FTP server option. This is not a hacked LS,

Opening ports 20-21 is not enough to get FTP to work.
You need to open a few (say 3) higher number ports.
Try opening 1025, 1026 and 1027 as well. I just
looked at what I had forwarded on my router. For more
info look at the RFC for FTP. You also need to use
the right mode of FTP.

It's also difficult to test since you can't ftp from
inside to your public IP address. I was able to ssh
to a unix host and then ftp back into my LAN from that
host to test.

Unfortunately, there isn't. My web space went down without notice when
they switched to a different server, and I don't have a backup. The
only binaries left are outdated and insecure; you can grab them from
<http://hvkls.dyndns.org/downloads/archive/>. You should compile the
most recent version from <http://openvpn.net> from scratch, my
instructions plus a few files needed for an LS1 with the stock firmware
are still available from <http://hvkls.dyndns.org/downloads/>.

Here's my procedure (I think) with a few questions:

1) compile LZO (lzo-2.02.tar.gz) with --prefix=/usr/local

Q: I've put other programs in /mnt as recommended in the wiki to
avoid space problems. Does this change my options for prefix? Should
I just leave it as you suggest?

2) compile OpenVPN (openvpn-2.0.6.tar.gz) with

			 ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --with-ifconfig-path=/bin/ifconfig
--with-lzo-headers=/usr/local/include --with-lzo-lib=/usr/local/lib
--enable-pthread ; make ; make install

Q: Same question on location etc

3) Get /dev/tap* and /dev/net/tun from a Debian PC System and transfer
them using tar

Q: I don't have a Linux box. If I can get them somewhere, where do
they go on the LSI?

TIA for your help.

That's up to you; but you need to make sure your system can find it
(man ldconfig). Personally, I would put it into /usr/local, while /
usr/local could be a symlink to, say, /mnt/local, or made accessible
with "mount --bind" (man mount)

it's right below the compilation instructions ;)

How can I add a second IP Address permanently?
I've tried to add in /etc/network/interfaces the following lines but
no success.

iface eth0:1 inet static
  address 192.168.0.4
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  broadcast 192.168.0.255
  gateway 192.168.0.1

any ideas?

Any thoughts on what it would take to upgrade a Linkstation to a Home
Server? When Maxtor introduced the Shared Storage Plus, they also
made available a software/firmware upgrade to add the media server
capability (a new feature in the 'Plus') to the Maxtor Shared Storage
unit. No sign yet of Buffalo doing anything similar officially, but
could it be done unofficially (short of installing Slimserver or
Twonkyvision, I mean)?

I am trying to create a startup script to run Slimserver on the
Kurobox.

I have slimserver installed and
running "mnt/slimserver/slimserver.pl". I have done a lot of
searches but have not been able to make this work. I found the
following script here and tried to modify it to fit my setup but I
can not get this to work on bootup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'll assume the script is called "slimserver". The script looks good as
such; you'll have to "chmod 0755 /etc/init.d/slimserver". If /"etc/
init.d/slimserver start" works, create a symbolic link to it in the
right place, either /etc/rc.d/rc2.d/slimserver or /etc/rc2.d/
slimserver.

Andre - Thanks for your resposne.

The script is slimstart.sh. I enter "/etc/init.d/slimstart.sh start"
and slimserver starts. I check ps -A and it shows slimserver.pl.

I created a soft link in "/etc/rc.d/rc2.d/slimstart.sh" but the
script does not run at bootup. I checked ps -A and no slimserver.

What am I doing wrong?

The script may not run due to security restrictions if your perl is in
/usr/local/bin/.

Also, and more probable, is the startup timing is wrong. Rename your
softlink to "/etc/rc.d/rc2.d/S90slimstart.sh"

Andre - I am really in over my head. I don't know what the perl files
look like but I don't see anything like that in /usr/local/bin/. Just
vlc, bison, xml, etc. However, I do see a symbolic link
to "slimstart".

Is there a way to get around this?

I saw something about creating a USER named slimserver in one of the
instructions but it was a more elaborate script. Does this give
access and get around the security issue?

Thanks,

Ed
