Hi
I think, this wont work.
The LS has a 3 wire fan with a speed sensor.
When the fan stops, the LS stops too.

Yes, I realized when cleaning the fan from dust that when I slow it,
it switches to high rotation frq. afterwards. There may be some boot
falure without fan. Since I did not yet open the case, I do not know
more. But you might well be right that it will not work.

Question: After restarting my Linskstation HD-HG400LAN, I couldn't find my
shared folders on my network nor could I access it via browser. I used the
Easysetup CD to successfully find the Linkstation on the networ, and was
able to access the Linkstation's Link Navigator via a web browser. The first
time following the disappearance of my shared folders from the network, I
navigated to "Shared Folder Setup" and could see my list of shared folders
(by the way, none of them have ever had any access restrictions). However,
when I tried to edit one of the shared folders (to enable a recycle bin),
the list of shared folders was replaced with one shared folder named "Binary
file /etc/melco/shareinfo matche" with an access restriction and a shared
folder description of "777". Any attempts to edit this folder result in the
error: "ad-setup-share-edit.pl---rdoOS Check Error"

From what I can see, the percentage of the disk space used (30.08%)
indicates my data is still on the Linkstation, however, I cannot access it.
I shutdown the Linkstation and restarted it, and now I see 5 shared folders
in the "Shared Folder Setup" screen, all with an access restriction and a
"777" description and names as follows (without quotes):
"Binary file /etc/melco/shareinfo matche"
"1"
"0"
"0"
"0"

None of these names are the same as what I had previously. As before, any
attempt to edit these mysterious new shared folders results in the
"ad-setup-share-edit.pl---rdoOS Check Error." Since discovering the odd
behavior, I've flashed the firmware to the latest version, 1.42.

Any ideas what to do next to recover my data and /or get the Linkstation
back to where it was before?

I'm sorry, but why do you want to take away the fan in the first place?

If its making too much noise, replace it.

The idea is that if I use a 2,5" HDD that does not produce that much
heat, I do not need active cooling for the rest of the LS. So if I
take away a main heat source, maybe I can lay the fan to rest as well?

I think I read the following numbers: LS1 with HD powered up: 17W,
with HD sleeping 10W. Passive cooling should be possible.

That was why I asked if anybody did anything like this already.

In fact, I was always looking at Linksys's NSLU2 that comes without a fan.

> If its making too much noise, replace it.

If passive cooling does not work (and there is the RPM sensor issue) I
will do this (or slow down the original fan a little bit by reducing
voltage).

Do you know of a suitable replacement? Someone recommended the SilenX
40 x 10mm Fan 14 dBA, if I recall correctly. It is 10£.

That first hurdle is dependant on the firmware version you have.
Check on that. Commonly you will not have a firmware that has telnet
access.

If so, that means you would want to load a freelink or openlink
firmware from www.linkstationwiki.net. This can be a bit of a task,
but its not that hard. If you follow the instructions clearly, you
can have a successful install, using openlink you can have SSH and
telnet access for the device while still running the same web
interface and having all the settings.

You know that this box is a linux box, correct? Does Himatchi make
its software for linux?

For more info:
http://www.linkstationwiki.net/index.php?title=Category:OpenLink

You can get the downloadable firmware from the downloads section.
if you are going for OpenLink, the version you want is here:
http://downloads.linkstationwiki.net/openlink/

There are different versions of the software, depending on your
version of linkstation.

check here to find your version:

I can assure you that the stock LS1 firmware will indeed shut down the box
if the fan sensor is not working (or reporting 0 rpms).

Anything one can do to disable monitoring?

BTW, I opened the LS case and out some oil on the fan. Now it is
silent as it was when I bought my unit two years from now. But from
what I saw I think there is no need for active cooling once the big
HDD is replaced...

Hello All,

I'm new to this group and the LinkStation. I have a Bufallo
LinkStation HD-HLAN964 with a 160GB hard drive. Is it possible to
replace the internal hard drive in the unit with a 300GB one? If the
answer is YES, would you please show me how? Do I need to use such
software as Ghost or Acronis TrueImage to clone the hard drives? Will
the FTP server access the whole capacity of the new drive?

Thanks in advance for your great help. Have a good day.

Cheers,
Phuong

Just put an unpartitioned drive in, and run the firmware updater.

A machine with SuSe Linux?
Another one with XP?
Stock Linkstation?
Can't double-click MP3 on mounted linkstation and play
from Linux, but can copy to Linux system and play?
Basically confused.

Another plea for more information:

How are you trying to access the files?
    a) Entering "smb://{linkstation-name)" in KDE Konqueror?

    b) mounting the share "mount -t smbfs //{linkstation-name or
IP}/share /mnt/linkstation?

    c) Some other SMB client program?

    d) Trying to access the Linkstaion via NFS instead of Samba?

Then what happens when you try?
    a) Share not found?
    b) Server not found?
    c) Get a login prompt, but can't login?
    d) Something else?

Yes, although I have not actually done it.

No, and in fact, this is probably the hard way to do it. These
programs will have to know how to copy and resize an EXT-3 file
systems. (gparted does, and it is free).

> Will the FTP server access the whole capacity of the new drive?

No, it only accesses the shared files area.

>

Probably the best way to do it is to copy off all the files you stored
on the drive to a safe place, then swap out the drive (see my
pictorial on this at:
http://wartstew.homelinux.net/linkstation/Disassembly.html)

With the new drive installed, boot up the system (it will go into what
is known as "EM" mode, with nothing working), and run the software
updater, or better yet the "OpenLink" version of it. You will have to
access it using the factory default IP network I think.

After the operating system is re-installed, copy your files back onto
it. Your configureation should come back because it is stored in
Flash memory.

-------

I've never actually done this, so any who have, please comment.

In regards to this method, you may need to run the firmware updater
twice, once to partition the drives, and the second time to put the
image on the first partition.

Linux only recently gained write support on NTFS filesystems. If you're on
Buffalo's kernel,
you have to use VFAT; alternatively, you could try kernel 2.6 from <http://
hvkls.dyndns.org>.

forget the installation guide there. do not use that binaries.

if you run kernel 2.6 you can have kernel-nfs which is much faster.

You probably need to reformat the USB drive using the LinkStation Web-
driven format utility before you can write onto it. Your old drive was
probably formatted with either NTFS or FAT32. Hope this helps. Phuong.

Well, I had things working fine with my setup, until I wanted to
upgrade to Slimserver 6.3. I can get Slimserver running and it starts
at bootup on the Linkstation, but when I connect to it with the Roku
and begin to browse, the slimserver.pl process ends. I reboot the
Linkstation and the Roku and the same error occurs. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Gabriel

Jacques, how long does it take with your bdi2000 to flash u-boot over
JTag?

Thanks

Just found this AN, looks useful and includes source code, one could
compare to the jtag bus-driver. They say 73 bytes/sec on a 25MHz 486, so,
on a 1GHz "should" be 3kB/s ~ 180kB/min:

Hi

I have a LInkstation v2.xx that I use as file server and media server
together with with a Linktheater. I have seen that SwissCenter looks
way better than the standard Buffalo GUI for LinkTheater + the extras
like weather forecast.

I am considering installing it but I would like to get some advice on
this:

- Could anyone give me some feedback on SwissCenter? Is it really
worth the hassle?
- Does it conflict with the standard file server utility from Buffalo,
like the ftp server. Is it still there?
- Is it very hard to get it up and running? Being a nearly complete
newbie on Linux (only experience as user and installing minimal
things), I am a bit concern of it. I¨m good following instructions and
very keen on trying SwissCenter!!
- Is it possible to roll back to original firmware?
- I see from SwissCenter that it is possible to browse internet. Does
this mean that with only the linkstation and the netplayer I can do
it? NO need for a PC as standard from Buffalo? That sound very cool!!

Any advice / instructions?

Thanks

Ed
