Hi

I have a LInkstation v2.xx that I use as file server and media server
together with with a Linktheater. I have seen that SwissCenter looks
way better than the standard Buffalo GUI for LinkTheater + the extras
like weather forecast.

I am considering installing it but I would like to get some advice on
this:

- Could anyone give me some feedback on SwissCenter? Is it really
worth the hassle?
- Does it conflict with the standard file server utility from Buffalo,
like the ftp server. Is it still there?
- Is it very hard to get it up and running? Being a nearly complete
newbie on Linux (only experience as user and installing minimal
things), I am a bit concern of it. I¨m good following instructions and
very keen on trying SwissCenter!!
- Is it possible to roll back to original firmware?
- I see from SwissCenter that it is possible to browse internet. Does
this mean that with only the linkstation and the netplayer I can do
it? NO need for a PC as standard from Buffalo? That sound very cool!!

Any advice / instructions?

Thanks

Ed

Hi,

I have a Linkstation which is an v1 model (purchased mid 2004, 120gb).
It is really now nearly full, and I am moving some (most) data from it
to another solution (a custom made Linux box).

However, I am wonting to still use the Linkstation for backups of a
Windows 2003 system, which takes around 50gb.

I also was wondering how far the Linux development had come on,
specificly, I wanted to install an MTA and put a mailing list server
(Mailman) on the box?

I can't do this on my main Linux box due to other apps being on the box,
and I wanted a separate box for the mailing lists.

Anyone done this before, or can give me some pointers?

Thanks,
Andrew.

Hi Ed!

I have been using SwissCenter on a LS2 with 250GB for some time now
(about 8 months). This piece of software is quite powerful, and the LS
is perfect for using it with SwissCenter. I can only recommend that you
try and install it - it's really worth the effort, and it's _way_ better
than everything else, especially the LinkTheater software and the ugly
built-in PCast stuff.

You will still have all your stuff like PCast or the ftp server etc if
you install the openlink firmware, which should be the first step. And
you can go back to the original firmware. The only difference that you
will see is that you can telnet into the linkstation.

The installation of SwissCenter is quite straight forward if you have
all the prerequisites on the linkstation, but the hard part is
installing those prerequisites.

I recommend first installing SwissCenter on a normal Windows PC and
trying to get used to it before going through setting up the linkstation.

What you need on the linkstation (as far as I remember): Apache, MySQL,
PHP4 with GDLib and Freetype2 compiled in (as far as I remember), Don't
try it with php5 because there are still a number of problems.

I had to compile apache, mysql and php4 myself, don't know if you still
have to do that - have a look around in the Linkstation Wiki
(www.linkstationwiki.net).

HTH,
Bernhard

Just install "Freelink" (PPC version)
which is a mostly pure Debian Linux, then do an:

apt-get update
apt-get install mailman

Then configure it to your heart's content.

I've never run mailman myself, but I did have an MTA running on my
LS for awhile (it still is running, kind-of). It should all work
just fine for you.

You'll have to design your own backup system however, perhaps just
a "cron" task running "tar" or "zip" over a samba share? or you
could push it through a share from your windows machine if you like.

Can LinkStation with SlimServer plays Apple Lossless?
From the info on Slimdevice homepage, it says iTune or Quicktime has to
be installed.
Actually, I am new to that and don't know anything about Linux.
Could anybody help? Thanks!!!

I recently bought a Linkstation II and wanted to install the Slimserver
software on it. I followed the instructions in the wiki, got root
access, installed the openlink software, and slimserver 6.2.2. When I
tried to run slimserver I got the known "SQLite, etc. modules failed to
load" error and could not get slimserver to run. Then I read about
potential problems with Perl5.8.7, so I installed Perl5.8.5 and
reinstalled slimserver. Trying to run slimserver now gives me errors on
the first few lines of the slimserver.pl file:

require 5.006.000;
use strict;
use warning;
..
package PerlSvc;

It says that these commands are not found. Help.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

this shouldn`t be that hard. unpack the firmware with the right
password, replace everything with the hda1-stuff of a working
debianized Linkstation and then repack it.

thats what freelink on www.linkstationwiki.org is about.

First off, I'm playing with a copy of Windows Vista Beta 2, so this is
quite likely M$'s problem, but I'm hoping someone here has some
insight (and possibly a solution).

Anyway, when I try to map my HD-H160LAN's shared folder to a network
drive, I get:

      System error 86 has occurred.
The specified network password is not correct.

I can access the share from Vista via FTP, and the Web interface works
just fine. I can also map the share from the same PC when booted into
XP, as well as from all my other PCs running various flavors of
Windows from 98SE through XP.

The Linkstation DOES appear as a network device from within Vista in
the Windows Explorer, so Vista IS seeing it. Firewall on or off,
doesn't matter, I still can't map the share (NET USE doesn't work
either). Does anyone have any idea what the problem with Vista is
(other than it being an unfinished, buggy piece of ****)? :-)

TIA

Hi,

Apologies if this has been asked/answered before, but I have a 250GB
LinkStation that is nearing capacity. Can I upgrade it to a higher
capacity? If so, how? The Seagate Barracuda 500GB looks nice but can I use
a 7200rpm drive or do I have to stay with a 5400rpm drive?

Thanks,

I have plugged in a USB flash drive in the rear USB socket and it
shows up as:

I can't use it as a backup drive (I have set the "Use as shared drive"

flash drives for backup?

Hey,

I recently upgraded my 250 gig LS to the OpenLink firmware.
Everything went smoothly and I'm up and running. I have a small
(typical) home network with a linksys router, a few computer and the
LS. I have successfully SSH'd to my LS, and would like to set it up
to be accessable externally. I have tested this by using port
forwarding on the router and it appears to work well. I'm concerned
about security, I don't know enough about it, other than that I should
  be concerned.

Can anyone advise me on the security risks of leaving the port (22 I
think) open to the internet? Also, can someone point me to the
pertinent logs that display activity, such as logins/attempts and file
transfers. I found these once before for the ftp server but cannot now.

Thanks
Harley

I just replaced my original 250 with a WD 320 GB 7200 RPM drive (my
250 died) and it works fine. I presume a 500 would work, too.
There's an excellent "how to" guide with photos on how to
disassemble the LS on this site.

Good luck!

Yes

Here is an overview:

Backup your data, or plan to put it in a USB case or another
computer running either Linux or the "explorExt2" utility to access
the drive.

Physically swap out the drive.

Then run the "updater" utility on the new drive, preferably
the "openlink" version of it.

Then copy your data back on the new drive.

At least on the non-HG models, even the 5400 RPM drive is faster
than the bus in the Linkstation (29MB/S), so you'll probably not see
a performance improvement. The thing to watch out for is power
consumption which is proportional to heat. Some of these drives may
get hotter than the Linkstation's ability to cool it off.

What happened to your PS? If you can't get another PS to swap in,
you might consider getting yours repaired. There are not many parts
to it and most are commonly available. The PS will
run "Stand-alone" and even has a place where you can solder in an
LED that will tell you when it is working. A technician could
probably "shotgun-replace" a half a dozen inexpensive components in
it and get it working again.

I blew out mine once by dragging it against the bottom of the metal
mounting plate. It seems the big electrolytic capacitor holds a
charge after the power is removed. It blew out a tiny zener diode
that was almost hidden near the transformer.

Don't expect it to do any real-time trans-coding. It doesn't have
enough power for this. I could not even get it to stream audio-only
very well (using "streamripper"). Some people might had slightly
better success with slimserver.

Yesterday I attempted to get the TiVo media server "Galleon" running
on it using IBM's Java VM. It was un-useably slow and finally used
up all my virtual memory anyway (memory leak?).

<http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net/> and similar programs can improve SSH
security
significantly. These websites will also point you to guides how to improve
(Open)SSH

The log you're looking for is /var/log/auth.log.

share is in /mnt.

cp /mnt/share/perl-5.8.5-linkstation.tar.gz /
cd /
tar -xzvf perl-5.8.5-linkstation.tar.gz

This is actually exactly what I typed in, but the file is not
there. I assume that my problem is then in having put the file in
the right place, but I see it in the share file on windows XP
without any problem.

Here is the exact process I am following:

1) in the run box I type the IP address of the linkstation
2) a window comes up with several folders corresponding to the
folders I have set up on the linkstation in addition to a few others
3) in the "share" folder that is there I put the perl file as
indicated above
4) I then go and SSH in and enter the command that the ReadMe file
says and what you have suggested, but here is what I get back:

root@LINKSTATION:~# cp /mnt/share/perl-5.8.5-linkstation.tar.gz /
cp: cannot stat `/mnt/share/perl-5.8.5-linkstation.tar.gz': No such
file or directory

I must be doing step #3 above wrong, perhaps someone can correct
me? Thank you again so much for the help, I certainly appreciate
this.

the hackme.cgi is used to gain root access.

guess what?

you have root access because you flashed openlink.

so forget the hackme.cgi part.

if you do not want to repair it or let someone else do it:

http://www.kurobox.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1037

the psu should be useable with the LS as the kuro is the same box as
the LS....just the developer edition....

maybe you have luck and they did not order them.

you have a LS2 (mips).

on all ppc-based Linkstations:
the shares are at /mnt/
the usbdisk is mounted to /mnt2/usbdisk1

on the LS2 (mips)
the shares are at /mnt/hda/
the usbdisk is mounted to /mnt/usbdisk1

hope that helps.

Whenever I reboot my LinkStation 2 the date is reset to 00:00:00
1/1/2002. Why is this happening?
