Turns out that this statement is incorrect. The "usbdisk1" share does
not connect, but the LS share seems to be fine -- I can access the
data normally.

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide!

DS.

Look in "dmesg" output on your LS - if there're any USB error messages
there.

No space, tried the possible capitalizations. Thanks for the
suggestions, though. Might try mapping a "drive" over FTP if I have to.

i assume you are running a telnet enabled firmware (maybe openlink)
please post the output of

df
ls -al /mnt2/         -> if you have a LS1
ls -al /mnt/          -> if you have a LS2

maybe try a

chmod 777 /mnt2/usbdisk1      -> LS1
chmod 777 /mnt/usbdisk1       -> LS2

tell us which box you have for further analysis.

fans have moving parts. and they become old. thats the problem.

you can swap the fan. there is a link in the FAQ section of our wiki
at www.linkstationwiki.net that mentions the right model.

http://linkstationwiki.net/index.php?title=FAQ#Can_I_replace_the_LinkStation_fan\
.3F

best idea would be to swap the fan and buy a small
potentiometer...then you are able to additional slower the fan from
outside.

This may be related to the linux kernel and ext2 file system versions
that the Linkstation uses. It tends to get a tad shirty with files
bigger that 2GB.

I have a similar set up, with a Maxtor One Touch drive. If I try to
copy a file larger than 2GB to the usb drive it truncates the file and
I have to reboot the LS.

Maybe someone with a little more kernel level know-how can suggest a
workaround???

Hi,

I am totally new at this, but I upgraded my LS2 to use OpenLink the
other day in hopes of getting my mac g4 laptop to be able to browse
the linkstation files with long files names.

I tried what is suggested at the wiki
http://linkstationwiki.net/index.php?title=Articles/Macintosh

but when i try the "apt-get" command it doesn't have this. So has
anyone been able to install netatalk on OpenLink, and are there easy
to follow instructions?

Also when I installed OpenLink I created a new user called Normal, but
when I telnet in as Normal, this user doesn't have permissions to do
anything. What do you suggest i give it, so I am not always using root.

Thanks a ton,
Aaron

On OpenLink, you've got to compile netatalk yourself, as outlined in the
article. You've got
to install the dev-tools for your system first.

Well, nothing. That's the idea behind access privileges. Just open a second
connection in a
second terminal window.

What's your exact problem? Is it you can't access files the LS is supposed to
serve?

I have installed the dev-tools already, will have to try to compile netatalk then.  Thanks.

As for the user privileges, nothing is broken.  I was just wondering as a "good use" type idea what privileges should be set for a user other then root. But I am guessing its different for everyone so this question my be voided.  When you telnet/ssh to your linkstation do you typically always use root?

Basically every time I log in (via SSH only). Because I do it only when I want
to change the
configuration. If I just want to store files on it, I mount the shares in the
Finder, or have
iTunes do it for me.

Does anyone know how to disable/disconnect the Linkstation's fan and still
have it boot properly? If there is no fan present, the Linkstation will
flash the red Diag LED 4 times and then shut down. But I'd like to run it
without the fan, leaving the case off for ventilation. Is there a some way
to disable the fan check or fool the Linkstation into thinking the fan is
working properly?

Assuming that the fan's tach signal is open collector
and it operates off of 5 volts then figure 14 here
http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM555.html + a resistor
and an NPN transistor would be all that would be
needed. Something like a 2n3904 with a
(5V-0.6)/(25E-3/100). 25 mA will put the transistor
into saturation and Hfe is about 100 if I remember.
This resistor would be about 15K in series with the
output of the timer. The emitter would go to ground
and the collecter would go to the tach signal. Values
aren't critical.

Pick R and C such that the frequency is 1 pulse per
revolution for starters and/or check the data sheet
for the fan.

WHat needs to be verified: Fan 5V, Tach signal is open
collector. If it's 12, change the 5 in the eqn. to
12.

a question..which LS-model do you have?

if you have openlink/freelink installed on your box you could install
avr_evtd instead of ppc_uartd.

ppc_uartd is the stock avr_evtd daemon and monitors the buttons, the
fan and how full the hdd is.

avr_evtd is the opensource variant and was created by lb_worm from
www.linkstationwiki.net with the kuro_evtd-source as a base.

with avr_evtd you can simply run the linkstation without a fan if you
configure it that way.

here is the link that might be interesting for you:
http://www.linkstationwiki.net/index.php?title=AVR_watch-dog_daemon_for_Linkstat\
ion

look at the variable FANSTOP...it can be set to OFF.

i am currently thinking of building my own case...and remove the small
and noisy fan...

If you wanted to use the stock firmware you could just flash it with

could flash one of those.

Well, I know where it is, but it won't talk to me ;-)

I have a LS running Gentoo 2.6

Everything was going great until I adjusted the routing tables with
route, and then the machine stopped responding. I rebooted, but that
didn't help. I can no longer ping or ssh into the machine. I suppose
I'll need to extract the hard disk, and connect it to my PC to repair
it, but I do not know what to look for or what to change to restore the
default routing tables so the machine will talk to me.

Can anyone give me a pointer?

Thanks,

Chris

Ok i need some more help. I have installed the BerklyDB and I think I
complied Netatalk, but i must have missed something. Or I just don't
know how to run netatalk. The steps I took where I ran configure on
netatalk, then make install. What do i do next?

Thanks
Aaron

Is it already running?

ps auxw|grep afpd|grep -v grep

If it is, and is already doing so after a reboot, configure netatalk as I
suggested here:

Hi,

played with RC1 and couldn't connect either. Searched linkstation
wiki forum and found:
http://www.scalefree.info/2006/09/vista_and_buffalo_terastation.html

"Just a note in case anyone else runs into this problem.

If you want to connect to a share on a Buffalo Terastation (which
seems to be using Samba) from a Windows Vista installation, you need
to do the following:
Run the Local Security Policy app - secpol.msc
Go to Local Policies | Security Options and choose the "Network
Security: LAN Manager Authentican Level" item
Set it to "Send LM & NLTM, use NTMLv2 session if negotiated"

And that should sort you out."

(Works also with Linkstation)

Have fun
Gonzo

FYI

http://www.buffalo-technology.com/support/downloads.php

There seems to be a new firmware version available. But I don't know
if it's for the LS1 or LS 2 (PPC or MIPS) or what changes might be.

Didn't test it as I customized mine and don't want to loose changes.

I ran the command you gave me and it gave me this:
root@HIPPO:/# ps auxw|grep afpd|grep -v grep
root 280 0.0 2.0 7436 1296 ? S 12:01 0:00
/usr/sbin/afpd -c 1000 -n HIPPO

Is that good? I tried to follow the directions you suggested on the
webpage but i don't seem to find the same files as your example. The
only place i can find a directory of netatalk is where I extracted the
tar file to root@HIPPO:/usr/local/netatalk-2.0.3#

Thank for any info, I guess I might be over my head.
Thanks again,
Aaron

I mistakenly locked my root user using passwd -l on my LSII with
openlink. Is there any way to unlock it?

Never mind. I used the exploit from this thread to modify the
/etc/shadow file:

That's good, netatalk is on. Try and see what version is running, which will
also answer
your question about the location of the configuration files:

afpd 2.0.3 - Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) daemon of Netatalk
