Hi,

Has anyone updated the DST info on their Linkstation? I checked
ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/, but this doesn't appear to be current.

Hi,

I'm toying around with the idea to put the OpenLink firmware on my LS.
Just wondering, if OpenLink supports user passwords longer than 8
characters (the most annoying limitation in the original firmware)?

Thanks

Hey all,

I reset and then reflashed my LS pro and now my shares are no where to
be found. The drive still says the data is there (50% full) but I
have no idea how to find them and then reset them up.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Sound like your data is still on the internal disk ( /mnt/disk1 ) ,
but that no share are set up.

if you had shares, have you tried remaking them ?

Sounds like a Samba problem !!

I assume that you are using Openlink or Freelink.  I'm using the latest Openlink.

In a directory such as tmp run these commands
wget http://www.it.ubc.ca/__shared/assets/zoneinfo-2007b-world.tgz
tar -C /usr/share -xzvf  zoneinfo-2007b-world.tgz

Now test it, run
/usr/bin/zdump -v /usr/share/zoneinfo/MST7MDT | grep 2007
You should see 4 lines, 2 with a mar 11 date and 2 with Nov 4 dates

No, not really, Marc. It should work with pretty much any version
of Linux.

Check the file /etc/localtime -- mine is a symbolic link to

I think yours will be the same according to the headers in your mail.

Oh, Tony's URL wasn't quite correct -- use ...2007a.... not 2007b

Marc,

I suggest that you open a ticket with BuffaloTech. I suspect that, in order to
correct for this, they will release a new firmware version. In order to do
this, they have to obtain an updated embedded Linux from their supplier before
they can package such a thing. I would think that they will be too cheap to do
this though, but we'll see.

Private mail from linuxnotincluded gives the answer:

---
What appears to happen to your setup is that the AVR receives the reboot
command from the kernel before passing the control to u-boot. Once the
reboot command is issued to the AVR, there is no going back. The AVR
_will_ reboot the LinkStation. The power LED blinking fast is what shows
that the AVR is in this state.

The problem with uloader is that it attempts to leave as much as
possible from the shutdown to happen in order for the disks to be shut
down properly but before the reboot string is sent to the AVR. Depending
on the original kernel, the assumptions made by uloader may be
incorrect.

I will have to look again at the sources about the UART initialisation
but, as I said before, the AVR will ignore any commands once it receives
the reboot command. This is why the minimal console doesn't work. The
buttons are read by the AVR which passes the information to u-boot (or
to the kernel).

This doesn't happen when u-boot is in flash because u-boot takes over
the LinkStation when the AVR has been re-armed and ready to accept
commands.

If the AVR is your only problem and everything else works for you, then
the risk of flashing u-boot is small. Lots of people have done it and I
haven't heard of any problems. Unfortunately, there are no absolute
guarantees. Even if you u-boot build is fine, there is always the risk
of power loss during the flash and there have been reports of defective
flash chips, fortunately not in the u-boot area.

If you take the chance and something goes wrong, you can still find
somebody in your area willing to fix your box for you. You can post the
question in the Linstationwiki forums and see if there is anyone in your
area.
---

So I patched uloader:

--- uloader_mod.c.orig  2006-08-26 15:07:23.000000000 +0200
+++ uloader_mod.c       2007-02-22 00:18:41.000000000 +0100
@@ -207,7 +207,8 @@

    if((err = read_file(uboot, &uboot_buf)))
      goto out;
-  register_reboot_notifier(&uloader_notifier);
+  //register_reboot_notifier(&uloader_notifier);
+  load_uboot(va2pa(load_uboot), va2pa(uboot_buf), laddr);
    return 0;
  out:
    free_saved_pages();

and tried again. The RAM build worked nicely then, so I was comfortable
flashing the flash build. I've got the box running now with Guennadi's
powerpc-based 2.6.20 kernel and everything seems to be just fine.

The firmware update went well untill the reboot of the server. Now I

How do I get my Linkstation back in business???

I think you heard wrong, the Pro model has no such functionality.

usually NAS'es do not due to the fact that its most easily
accomplished in a router.

I believe the the new Linkstation Live will have a sort of dyndns
functionality, probably built on uPnP, allowing access to the device
from www.buffalonas.com, but I talked to one person who says that
there is no such functionality <i>yet</i>
cue the suspenseful music.

As for getting it on the LSpro, Freelink would be your best bet.

For the LSpro,there is also GenLink available now (being Gentoo it's
virtually unlimited extensible, so it's also a matter of taste, or
distribution one is used to), and ddclient has been proven to work
with DynDNS using the web page IP querying method, and adding ssl=true
(or similar, I found this info on the DynDNS page when helping a
Genlink user troubleshoot ddclient).

http://ddclient.sourceforge.net/

this dyndns-client is written in perl...and perl is even on the stock
system.

you need to enable telnet of your LS Pro with acp_commander, connect
via telnet, follow the installation here:
http://ddclient.sourceforge.net/#install

that should be all to get it working.

I sort of answered my own question here ... in comparing
/usr/local/lib/perl5 on the Linkstation to the corresponding folder on
my Fedora server, it is just a very small subset of Perl. And, through
experimenting, I've also determined that I can't just copy the Perl
folder from my Linux box, because there are some portions that are
CPU-specific. So ... I'm still not there.

i suppose you can even use the stock firmware.

http://www.cpan.org/misc/cpan-faq.html

question is if you really need some other perl modules...

if ddclient needs some specific modules then it should be inside the
ddclient docs.

Since the LS-Pro is once again a completely different animal from
other previous LS'es, this one being based on an ARM processor, None
of the easy-do-install solutions like Openlink and Freelink will
work for it yet.

So you have to follow much the same courses that we all took in the
early days of hacking our older boxes years ago.

There are two ways to go, one is to simply modify and add features
to the original OS, which is what eventually gave us Openlink, or
the second direction is to abandon the original OS that is hard to
customize, and install a full featured Linux OS like Debian or
Gentoo.

From the Linkstation Wiki:

http://linkstationwiki.net/index.php?title=Information/LSPROOverview

I see that our Japanese friend has once again given us a
Debian-Linux for the LS-Pro, Gentoo-Linux is here too. It also
looks like there have been some password hacking going on with the
original OS as well. In my opinion, the LS should NOT be your first
exposure to the inner workings of Linux however.

To just change the root of the FTP server, it seems to me that you
could pull the drive out of the LS and install it such that you can
access it from a Linux workstation, find the configuration file for
the FTP server (or probably the template of the one the web
interface will attempt to write over it with) and make the change
there. This is likely to be harder than it sounds however.
Previous hacking of LS'es resulted in doing things like fixing
the "Magic Number" on the file system, and breaking some of the
built in security measures on the Web interface.

Anyway, I would try to join in on the hacking attempts going on at
the LinkStation Wiki, which is the best forum for the Linkstation
these days.

Lots of Luck

I'm a LinkStation newbie, but with some decent Linux experience. A few relevant observations:

1. Getting telnet & root access to this device is very easy - just follow these instructions from the LinkStation Wiki (it's the first section, "How to enable telnet in EM Mode." If you can't do it in less than sixty seconds, you aren't trying hard enough. Much easier than pulling the drive and putting it in another Linux box, though that should work too.

2. Once you do (1), there are many things you can easily do. I've got remote sites doing an automated backup to one of these. After they're done, I have cron jobs running to automatically rename the files, and will soon be running a cron job to transfer today's backups to another LinkStation at a different location. Yes, my client is paranoid.

3. There are other things which would work on your Redhat box, which will be difficult or impossible on the LS Pro. For example, my original intention was to have the LS handle updates to the dynamic dns provider. There are perl scripts provided which do this, and I easily used one on my Redhat box. Unfortunately, the perl configuration on the LS doesn't contain all the common modules, and the updating got to be more complicated than I wanted to deal with, so I have his router  handling dyndns instead. Also, the web server doesn't have php loaded.

If it were my own box, I'd probably install another hard drive in it, and try a different version of Linux. Since it belongs to a client, I didn't want to spend the bucks on another hard drive, and I didn't want to risk bricking it, so I just stuck with minor mods to the original OS. All things considered, though, this device is very easy to work with if you're comfortable with the Linux command line. It doesn't seem to be powerful enough to be used as a web server unless you have very low traffic. But still, very cool.
