daer all,

I want to ask is there anyone know how to use usb to connect and
control the serial device. for example i want to connect a MCU to
control the motor. I think i should use c program to control the serial
device but i don't have any ideal about how to start it. is there any
reference or examples for me to reference?

he wrote the articles at IBM for the kurobox. there is no real

Subject: Where can I get Linkstations now? Does it have FTP server? Power consumption?

Hi,

I need to find a low-power NAS to work as an ftp server for a science
project, and came across this group. I have some very basic questions:

1) Where can I get Linkstations now? Buffalo has newer Linkstation
models but they appear to be higher-power.

2) Does the Linkstation have a built-in FTP server?

3) The literature says its power consumption is 17 watts. What arethe
actual rates people observe?

Thanks.

1) I found some here:
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&catref=C6&from=R10\
&submitsearch=Search&satitle=linkstation&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc\
%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=60130&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1&fsoo=1

There are some second hand ones and some new ones.

2) Yes, the FTP server that is built into the NAS has anonymous and
registered user access. The top-level sharing folder can be set to
read-only or writable.

3) Never checked when I had this series of Linkstation. Cant comment
on this question.

i checked the powerconsumption once and the Linkstation only (without
usb-hdds) really only needed 14 watts.

For the stock ftp-server proftpd is used.

if you have some special needs regarding the proftpd-server then you
can configure it from the commandline also.

for easy usage i recommend OpenLink (regardless which one of the older
boxes you might geht).

the newer LS Pro/LS Live also uses proftpd...and it also works well.

if anything is to limiting for you then you can install FreeLink which
is a minimal debian...then you can install everything available for
debian.

Hi,

I was tring to install the webinstaller  on my linkstation ls2.  I think i bricked it,  installed the openlink helper ( i had installed that in the past ) and extracted it, but then my wget command stopped working so i couldn't install the webinstaller.  I though maybe a reboot would help but that that just hosed it more.  So now when i turn the linkstation on, it boots 2 green lights, but then after about 3-4 mins it shuts off and the red light comes on and blinks 6 times.  During those 3 mins i can't seem to telnet or find the linkstation on the network.

So any ideas on how to get it up and running again?

My best guess is to take the HD out and plug it into my usb external enclouser and try to back up my data( know of any winxp utils to read the drive?), then reformat it? Is there a way to fix it without wiping all my data on it?

Thanks
Aaron

Does the LS Live handle long Mac filenames out of the box, or does it
require a NetATalk or another software/firmware upgrade like the older
LS models?

Hi

I'm using a 500GB Linkstation Pro as a backup device for my 2003 SBS Server,
and it works great using Windows backup.

Biggest problem I have is that it runs out of disk space after a week
because the old backup files which it overwrites are kept in a trashbox
folder on the drive. Each server backup is 50gb, taken nightly. Windows
backup keeps the last 5 backups, overwriting the oldest one each night. So
because it never actually overwrites the oldest backup, it soon runs out of
disk space.

Any clues? I've run the NAS configuration utility and can't find an option.

Thanks
eMicros

Go into the web interface and logon to the LS. Select "Shared Folders"
in the menu to the left. Click on the particular share on the right.
Disable the recycle bin, about halfway down on the right. Then click
Apply at the bottom.

I just received a new Linkstation Live (500GB) about 10 days ago.
After installing, with no issues, on to my home network (XP Pro on
both computers), everything was fine. So, I moved about 45gig of
files over to the Linkstation. On the second day, I noticed I could
not access administration to change the default password
of "password". Buffalo's support recommended resetting by pushing
the INIT button at the back. Bad mistake. That's when the network
access disappeared and I was no longer able to access the drive. I
worked on trouble shooting for two days, and then called Buffalo. An
hour later, they came to the conclusion that the firmware must have
been corrupted. We could not update the firmware, as we could not
access the drive...even when directly connected to the Linkstation
and using it's IP (which was pingable). They recommended removing
the internal Seagate drive, and slaving it on my computer...to
recover my data files....but with the caveat that "this would void
the warranty".

After finding out what a few companies wanted for data recovery, I
decided to remove the drive myself. It was a simple removal with no
issues. However, the drive's evidently in a Linux format, and I
cannot access any files. Plus, I didn't have a SATA drive computer,
so I borrowed a USB to SATA connector from a friend. Still no luck.
The files were not "critical", but are several years worth of scanned
photos from overseas, along with lots of docs. I really didn't want
to lose them.

Does anyone else have a suggestion? I'm not familar with Linux, and
don't know what to do to get the drive recognizable for recovery.

download knoppix and burn iso to CD.
This will allow you to access your linux file system and copy it to your ntfs filesystem.

Thankyou!

I hadn't realised within the share folder that you could click on the share

Thanks for pointing me in th right direction.

I would say that the more reliable ext3 driver seems to be ext2fsd,
not ext2ifs, I cant speak for everyone, but only the former worked

The best suggestion I have for you since it's only 10 days old is to
return it for a refund. My 400G HG station did the same
thing...except it took Buffalo sooo long, about four months now of
emails and every time a different person who seem to have no record or
knowledge of my previous conversation with anyone there. So I finally
now got an RMA but I am going to lose about 200G of confidential files
and other such things that I would consider irreplaceable. Buffalo
sent me the same email they sent you...basically, without knowing any
better, they decided it must be the controller and suggested (after
I'd asked for an RMA number several times) that I take it apart...even
sent me a link to a how-to-do-it...and then added that it would void
my warranty if anything was damaged in the process....so I basically
didn't chance it....10 days old though with yours, you still likely
have some kind of return or exchange options...about the data, I don't
know much about linux but I was reading a bunch of stuff on Wikipedia
about these LinkStations and people are turning them into little linux
servers so Wiki might be a good place to start hunting for a way to
get your files back...seemed like there's a pretty good sized

I dont know if this will help you but I had a disk problem with my linkstation. I found a computer student who knew a bit about linux and he was able to connect the hard disk to his linux computer and he managed to repair the problems.I lost some data but mostly it was intact. Buffalo are quite happy to replace the systems but you will lose your data. I would rather invalidate my warranty and maybe get my data back.

This may be a little too obvious ... but if you can ping the device,
then the firmware isn't shot and neither is the OS. First thing I'd
try is, see if you can connect to it using an ftp client. If that
doesn't work, try using acp_commander.jar to login to the box using
telnet, and you may be able to initiate an ftp session from the linux
machine. Instructions for telnetting to the box are here:

http://www.linkstationwiki.net/index.php?title=Custom_Partitions_on_the_LS_Pro

You want the section on " How to enable telnet."

It depends on where you got the Linkstation. They may notice the
broken seal and not take it back. I would say to download a "live"
linux such as 'ubuntu' (google it) and boot the desktop version on
your pc and access the files and copy them over. If you have a lot of
trouble with it and don't want to spend a small fortune for data
recovery, send me an e-mail @ "reece016'at'gmail'dot'com" and I can
try to recover it for you. If I fail I'll send the linkstation back to
you and not charge you (minus shipping). If I succeed then if you
don't want it any more I'll trade you for the broken linkstation.

Don't dump the Roku, dump Slimserver. I'd recommend Firefly (formerly
mt-daapd) - it's now Roku sponsored, and supports a dedicated Roku
streaming protocol, so it's pretty speedy. I've got it running on my
LinkstationII (w. openlink).

I think there might be some pre-compiled binaries for some linkstation
variants now - I compiled it myself though. Step-by-step instructions
are here;

Folks,

has anyone managed to get a Freelinked LS I plus 2.6 kernel play some
music?

I am trying to make my LS I work with a USB soundcard. What I have
done so far:
* LS I with fresh Freelink 1.11 installation
* Performed a dist-upgrade and some minor installs like SSH
* Upgraded to 2.6.20 Kernel using the latest update scripts at
http://hvkls.dyndns.org/downloads
* Installed usb-utils 0.72-7, hotplug 0.0.200040329-26, alsa-base
1.0.13-5, alsa-oss 1.0.12-1, alsa-utils 1.0.13-2

But alsaconf won't find a soundcard
alsamixer says: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
aplay complaints about not finding card 0

Is anyone willing to help me? My linux know-how is ...errrmmm...
well.... lets say limited. I searched for two nights now and haven't
found a starting point. The C-Media chipset seems quite popular and
works out of the box for most users. But not for me :-(

Many Thanks

You probably don't have a /dev/snd directory, or don't have permissions to use
it (if
your are not root). There should be some entries in there to access the device.
No,
I'm still using the OSS driver with kernel 2.4.x (I really need to get
up-to-date
someday) for my C-media device on my LS, but I've got alsa on many of my PC's
here
is what one directory looks like for /dev/snd:

bash-3.2# ls -l snd
total 0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 0 2007-04-21 15:14 controlC0
crw-rw--w- 1 root audio 116, 24 2007-04-21 15:14 pcmC0D0c
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 16 2007-04-21 15:14 pcmC0D0p
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 17 2007-04-21 15:14 pcmC0D1p
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 18 2007-04-21 15:14 pcmC0D2p
crw-rw--w- 1 root audio 116, 27 2007-04-21 15:14 pcmC0D3c
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 1 2007-04-21 15:14 seq
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 33 2007-04-21 15:14 timer

This is for a Yamaha YMF PCI card, which also has midi capability, hence some of
the
extra entries like "seq" and "timer".

Part of the problem might be that with that kernel you really should be using
udev
instead of hotplug and these entries should be created automatically (apt-get
install
udev). You can make them manually with mknod: "mknod /dev/snd/controlC0 -c 116
0" would create the first entry shown above.

You could also probably use the old OSS driver too if they compiled it for the
kernel,
try: "modprobe audio.o" once you remove all the alsa stuff and see, but then you
have to make sure you have /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer entries.

If you still have troubles, I can plug my C-media device into a PC with debian
and see
what I have to do to get alsa to work and let you know.

James, many thanks! Sound works.
Just had to remove hotplug and install udev. Since I have started from

I have used acp_commander with success on several occasions, but have
experienced an intermittent problem. Specifically, I sometimes get
this error:

ERROR: Exception: IO (Receive timed out) [Section: ACP_AUTHENT]

When I got the error, I ran it from a different computer on the same
network, and it worked fine. But of course, some day I won't have a
second computer to use, and I'll be SOL. Any ideas?

You haven't really given much of an error. which model linkstation,
which firmware, does it work on other computers, can you get to the
interface, what errors do you get.

If you give more information about your problem, you can expect better
help.

Bit of an emergency as it holds my music!

Current firmware is 1.44.. understand that I need 1.47 but its not
