Just make your Pro to a Linkstation Live: update the firmware of your
LS Pro with the firmware for the LS Live (i used 2.06 downloaded from
the buffalo-site :)

Can you specifically correlate the issue to heat?  As in other parts
of the system.   If you put the device near an A/C or other very cool
area, can you get longer life?

I'm not quite sure what the issue could be other than that.  There
isn't any loose wires or anything close to ungrounded metal is there?

Which model do you have, the HD-H model should work fine in that
regard, depending on if you have the correct formatting.  I would
assume that due to the successful backup, that should not be a
problem.  EXT3 for the file system?

As for the LS-GL Pro model, its good to note that if the drive is
FAT32 that you can backup to it, but cannot share it with Buffalo's
firmware.  You will want to format the drive to EXT3 to get that
functionality.

That depends on if you let the unit completely cool off before
restarting it.  With a quick restart, the unit is probably still at an
elevated temperature and the heavy load of booting could quickly get
it past the limit.

I'm a little concerned why your unit would then be so sensitive to
overheating that the reduction to a 5CFM fan would cause a problem.
Did you install a new hard drive that runs hotter much hotter (and
takes more power from the power supply) than the old one.  My LS-1 had
a low-performing Samsung drive in it which ran quite cool and didn't
take much power.  I had to search around quite a bit to find a drive
that had comparable low heat and power requirements.  I finally ended
up with a single-platter 160-Gig Seagate.  Granted this wasn't much of
an upgrade over the 120-Gig Samsung, but I thought the Samsung was
getting tired after running for a few years.

I know people successfully put in bigger, more power consuming drives,
but I'm just being a long-term reliability nut with my LS.

It is also possible that since the your LS-1 is probably getting a
little old, the power supply might be getting weak as well, thus
starting to drop out of regulation under heavy load.  Perhaps you
could monitor the voltage, preferably with an oscilloscope, worse case
just replace the smaller sized (thus used at higher frequencies)
electrolytic capacitors in the power supply.  Make sure you use high
quality 105-degree(F) ones designed for switch-mode power supply
applications.

Finally, maybe it is a mechanical connection problem with your LS-1.
For example, maybe when assembled there is different stress on the
circuit board that could be causing a marginal solder connection to
fail slightly?

Good luck with this one.  It would be good to run some more tests to
determine if it is really heat related or not.  Try running the unit
in your refrigerator!

Until today, neither of my two macs had any trouble mounting a share on my LS
pro via afp.

Suddenly today it doesn't work.  The AFP Client in the mac just hangs.  There's
no problem
mounting other shares on the LS via afp.  Just the one I want. :(  And there
doesn't seem to be
a problem mounting via SMB.

Any ideas?

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far to my overheating problem.  I say overheating because I am prepared to declare that is what the problem is.  I again disassembled the unit and confirmed that I could run it for several days without issue.  Then I turned it off, and let it sit for 12 hours in a cool room (c. 20C).  I reassembled the unit, checking carefully for any loose wires or cracks or anything else that might cause the system to fail when it was in a different physical configuration (and found no clues there).  The reassembled unit ran for c. 18 mins under heavy load, then failed.  I let it sit for about 1/2 hour, removed the gray "sheathing" to expose some holes in the case, and aimed a room fan on the unit.  I could not make it fail again.  Heat is almost certainly the culprit.

James: I did indeed replace the hard drive some time ago with one that may well run hotter.  However, I have kept the unit in a hot room and it ran without fail for months.  It was only when I replaced the fan that the failures started.  I noticed you mentioned that the 5CFM fan is a "reduction".  Do you have any idea what the original fan is rated for?

I may need to replace the fan again with a more powerful unit.  Alternatively, perhaps I can find a way to augment the cooling, perhaps by installing some sort of a heat sink.  Unfortunately, the construction of the unit makes that challenging.  Has anyone found alternative ways to cool their Linkstations?

the day it decided not to. Sent it back to Buffalo and after a while
they sent me back a brand new Linkstation Pro. Life was good until IT
TOO died on me for no reason. Couldn't mount the volumes of it, and
the drive seemed to make unusual noises. The noises have gone, but the
trouble remains. At one point I could reach the web config page for
the box and it seemed to suggest that I needed to reformat the drive;
however now I cannot even get to that web page. I swear, these boxes
just sit and run and that's it. I put no stress on them, no custom
software, nothing. Just turn it on when I need it, use it, turn it off
later.

So, Buffalo says that my warranty does not extend to the new box; I am
stuck with the original warranty, which means it is not OUT of
warranty which means I feel free to tinker with this thing to get it
working again.

I'm looking through the Linkstation Wiki pages and I see that FreeLink
seems like a fairly easy to install package. However, I'm not having
such great luck so far...

I plugged the unit into the ethernet port of my laptop and could not
ping it on the default 192.162.11.150. However, if I plug it into my
router I can ping it. I cannot, however, bring up the web interface to
the box in a browser. It is possible that my crossover cable is not
actually a crossover cable and that that is why I cannot ping it
locally. It may also be that the unit isn't grabbing that default
address, though the instructions for getting it to do that seem a
little convoluted.

NASNavigator sees the drive through the router, but the FreeLink
LSUpdater (trying initrd first, as per the wiki instructions) does not
see the drive at all.

So, I cannot even get past stage one right now. I could boot into
Linux (don't know a whole lot about it, but I can muddle my way
through) if that would give me an alternative to install the software.

I'm feeling pretty stuck and I really just want to finally get my
money's worth out of this box, because it seems like everyone enjoys
it and I feel left out of the party!

Hi,

If you can ping it through the router, have you tried putting the
original firmware back on?  I have had this trouble, and when the web
config wasn't accessible, I was able to put the original firmware back
on just by downloading it from the Buffalo site.

You have to disable the firewall on your PC, since I think it tries to
get something from it remotely.

I have a Buffalo 120 with an attached USB 250GB disk.  The 250GB disk
is failing, and I wanted to try and access the drive from a LINUX
(Ubuntu) PC or using some Windows tool that maps/mounts the drive.
Ubuntu won't mount the file system.  Nor can I access using Ex2FS under
Windows.  Can anyoone offer a suggestion? Thanks.

You need to use something called fixext2magic (more or less the right
name).  Post your question at the linkstationwiki.net site & use it
for reference, too.  Search the forums there...

The easiest way is to boot the PC into a Linux "Live CD" (Knoppix, ...), and use
one of the
precompiled executables.

Hi,

 

I can see that in the stock firmware, there is a backup function which searches for other Linkstations.  Does anyone know if this uses Rsync, and if it is possible to emulate the “other Linkstation” using a Rsync config file on another server?  I want to rsync files from a remote server to my Linkstation as backup.

I appreciate the response, but need to clarify that I have never modded my
LinkStation in any
way, whatsoever. The firmware is the stock firmware, and now that the unit is
out of warranty
I want to change to a new firmware. Buffalo's own firmware software (which looks
pretty
much identical to the update software provided by FreeLink) gives the same
troubles as the
FreeLink installer, i.e. doesn't see the drive where other options do.

I scheduled an immediate backup from my buffalo linkstation live to my
external usb and even though it finished it still says on the home
pages that the backup job is currently being done.  The jobs page also
doens't show and icon for that job to let me clear it.  Anyone ever
have this problem?  I've tried resetting but nothing seems to clear
it.  Any help is much appreciated.

I've seen the same issue with my LSPro,  if you don't have shell
access the easiest way to fix the issue is to initialize the box.
Go to maintenence -> initialization -> restore factory settings.

This will not affect your data, but it will reset all the settings in
the box.  Note that if you use static addresses, the box will revert
back to DHCP.

I would suggest using scheduled backups.  I only had the problem
happen with immediate backups, but never looked into why.  it didn't
happen with scheduled backups in my case.

rsync itself, by default, has no ability to "search for other devices"
so this would have to be an added in service.  looking at my running
processes, the binary is called ls_sonar.

There doesn't seem to be alot of documentation on this service, but

I hope you have the knowledge to go down this road, as it would be a
great accomplishment to put together a way to communicate and allow
backups to be sent to the device,  however, if you think its too much,
  you may find it easier to either ftp transfer the data.

FTP is built in of course, unfortunately NFS is not built into the
kernel.  I would imagine though,  that if you enable SSH access with
this, you could setup rsync functionality, although I've never
personally tried.

Hello - I just bought a linkstation live and am trying to configure it to be
access remotely through the web.

It comes up and asked for a username and password in a Microsoft smal box
(pic attached).  I have tried every possible user / password combination.

Linkstation user / password
user password set on web access screen in linkstation
router user password
computer user password

I could not get them to work and I thought maybe it was my firewall.  I shut
my router and windows firewalls totally down and it still did not work.

The IP address you see was my internal ip address for the linkstation

This page does not show up in the buffalo documentation.  I get the initial
screen asking for my nas name listed in the web access page and i get
through that with no problem.

Any thoughts?

You are not connecting to the shared drives you are connected to the
management login.

yet.

I'm not sure if my earlier reply made it through or not. I think you
are looking at the log in for users of the share. You set up users
first through the set up when you turn on WebAccess and setup the
shared folders. You can set up individual users or groups, or both.

Ok, so I feel stupid. I assumed that not only can I access my files
remotely, I could actually write back to the HD. I can't seem to do
it. Does WebAccess actually let me write? Or just Read?

I should point out that things seem to be working in general. I can
ssh in, run basic commands (man, ls, vi, etc.).

When I try to install webmin, I get an error:

I'm assuming it has to do with the fact that I've only got 119M
available in the root filesystem. I'm guessing that what I want to do
is put user packages on a different partition, but I'm not sure about
the best way to go about it (symlink maybe, but where does Debian put
its packages?). I'm also not terribly familiar with Debian
specifically and it's been a while since I've done much with Linux in
general.

Ideally what I'd like is to be able to store user installed packages
on the big partition but not expose them to network clients (Windows
and OS X). I'm also planning on installing slimserver and subversion,
so I'll be needing a hidden location to store MySql data and the
subversion repository, and I'd like to make it easy to upgrade the
OS/kernel in the future.

Is there a best-practices document for partitioning under freelink, or
can someone suggest some configuration options for my system?

Hi I recently bought an HD-HG400LAN and have successfully installed
PPC_Freelink 1.11 onto it. I have also upgraded to 2.6 kernel and the
box is now running, which means I can telnet/ssh into it and use the
samba shares.

I have set a static IP of 192.168.100.88.

Now I want to revert to the official firmware and for this purpose I
have switched back to the 2.4 kernel. But when I run FWUpdate.exe that
comes with the official firmware it just cannot see the box and keeps
saying "a linkstation is not connected".

What do I need to do short of opening up the box?

Run kernel 2.4 (as documented). Edit /etc/default/boot_new.sh, set NO_START="1",
reboot
& flash
