Can't really speak for the MP101, but my Netgear EVA8000 works great
with my Linkstation Live.

I just install the ushare 0.9.7 on my LS2 with Openlink 0.5.2 but I
find it cannot show the unicode chinese characters. Whereaes the same

Any hints whether it can be patched?

I'm new to this grop and just recently bought and installed a
LinkStation Live NAS for use as a network file server.

I have the LinkStation on my network and attached a USB drive to it to
use for backing up the share directory. When I look at the LinkStation
directory structure from my PC is see multiple mounts of the USB drive.
I see one mount in the root directory, I see another mount as a
subdirectory under the share directory (share/usbdrive1) and I see a
third mount under a subdirectory of the share directory
(share/pictures/usbdrive1). Any one know why this is happening?

When I try to back up my share directory to the USB drive I end up with
errors when the backup runs into the mounts of the USB drive in the
share directory. How do I fix this?

Thanks, John Moonan

When I first got my LSL, I set up the web access and it worked fine.
I succesfully access my files from my work place. I then upgraded my
firmware to the latest version, and now I can't seem to get the Web
Access set back up. When I put in my Buffalo NAS name, my key, and my
port number, it errors out saying that my name must be 3-20 characters
and ports must be 2 to 5 digits. But my Buffalo NAS name is ScorpioLS
and my port was 55555. These are the same settings I was using
before... succesfully.

I've tried different NAS names and ports, and still get this message.
I would flash back to 2.03 but can't seem to find that firmware on
Buffalo's website. In fact, as of this morning, when I pulled up
downloads for the LSL, there was nothing listed.

Any ideas?

It makes no sense, because I can log in just fine through a
command-line interface (telnet), but the same login and password

Hiya

I've just had the device back from a friend who likes to tinker but
had already been told by Buffalo (by email) that we couldn't upgrade
the 160gb Hdd to anything larger.

So I've plugged it in, and although it started I couldn't connect.

Today I've had some time so have dug deeper into it. I made sure the
crossover switch on the back was set right and it was plugged into the
switch OK. The router (192.168.0.1) detected the IP was in used but
couldn't find the name. It's listed as UNKNOWN. This may or may not be
a good thing as my wifi ap and mobile phone both appear when connected
as the same as well.

I downloaded the Navi program from Buffalo and ran that. Initially it
didn't connect but after holding in the INIT (red button) on the back
for 20s it found it.

Initally when it found it it was telling me the HDD was unformatted,
so I did another reset and now it's gone into EM mode.

None of these times have I managed to either use Web or fileshare
browsers to access the device. With a web browser I get "Problem
loading page" and Windows reckons there isn't anything there. I've
done a port scan and nothing is 'open'.

I've tried a few restarts and I'm not getting anywhere. I can't
connect to the device through its web browser, so I don't see how I
can change anything else?

What's left?!

Help? Someone? Please ;)

Have you tried flashing the firmware on your linkstation? Since you
have a crossover/patch switch, that means you need the first series
firmware designated 1.xx at buffalotech.com. or you can use the
alternate openlink or freelink firmwares at nas-central.org. these
give more functionality to the device which alot of times are needed.

http://nas-central.org/index.php?title=Category:LS1

read through there, and look at the openlink firmware, if your
interested in a web gui to control the device.

Those that have put 500 Gig drives in theirs may differ.

Yea, if a device doesn't respond to a DNS name request your AP will do
this. No big deal as long as you just use IP addresses instead.

> I downloaded the Navi program from Buffalo and ran that.

What is "Navi"? I'm certainly not current on anything coming from the
Buffalotech, but what the kind of thing you really need is their
Firmware installer/upgrader. At this point we recommend you instead
install at least "Openlink" from the Linkstation Wiki, now known as
http://www.nas-central.org, so that you will be able to tinker with
this product as well. It appears you have what we call a
Linkstation-1, so make sure you use the right "Openlink".

> Initally when it found it it was telling me the HDD was unformatted,

In summary, Most of the Linkstation's OS lives on a partition on the
hard drive. It looks like that partition is not on this hard drive
for some reason. Did your friend already put a new/different hard
drive in this unit? Therefore a very limited OS is all it has that
lives in some Flash memory. About all this mini "EM mode" OS knows
how to do is to install a new OS from a "firmware installer". So this
is what you should do.

Sorry, it's the "interface" software, "Buffalo NAS Navigator v1.2"

It was what was on their website.

Yes, I eventually found it, 30-40mb file, got that and ran it locally.
There were decidedly odd things happing on my network last weekend. The
wifi connection could see the buffalo, but the wired one couldn't. They
were all on the same subnet too... Odd.

But I had 100 percent on the wifi AP when 'flashing'. I would have
prefrered to have used a wired connection but it just wouldn't see the
device at all :(

I don't know what went wrong. When I 'resurected' the drive it still had
some of his data on it, 14gb worth. All Macintosh stuff so I've put it
'safe' for him here until he visits again with his usb bits... The HDD
is the original one, but if necessary that is updatable now. Which is a
good thing. Assuming I can find large PATA HDDs later down the line when
I can afford to upgrade it!

The firmware upgrade went well and it's running 1.47. No issues since
getting it going. TBH towards the end I was practically screaming abuse
at it, but now things have calmed down a bit more and stuff ;)

Thanks for you're advice

Cheers

Elwyn

Thank you for you're advice. I have decided for now to stick to the
original version simply because it is going out to another friend and I
would like to keep it as 'stock' as possible.

TBH when I first moved into the area of having a "Network Storage
Device" it was great, and 160gb was loads!

Now I've got a mini-itx debian system running web and file server with
current capacity of 1.2tb. Addictive isn't it :)

The device has been reflashed with the original but up to date firmware
(1.47) and it is behaving itself. I even let it run through with a
thorough check disk check to make sure was OK, but it didn't tell me if
anything was wrong so I'll fire it up again in a few days and check for
any logs or anything.

Thanks again

Cheers, Elwyn ;)

Hi !

I have a LS PRO with 500GB (FW 1.11 ) on my network (Fritzbox
7170 as router) and I like to use it as an afp-server.

Using it as smb-device I have no problems with either Win XP
nor MAC OS 10.5.1 or 10.4.11

I activated support for the apple-talk protocol,
so afp should be working. At the folders sections I also set Apple to
on. AFP 3.1 (long filenames and file size > 2GB) is told to be
implemented since FW version 1.10.

After pressing apple-K and typing afp://[IP-address] it is possible to
log-on and the available volumes are shown. After choosing a volume
I only get "Das Volume ... konnte nicht aktiviert werden" ( means "The
volume .. could not be activated", sorry german version).

I have tried it with a guest log-on and also with a user and password
created on the LS Pro. The outcome was always the same.

The same happens when i use a mac mini with tiger, smb is working, afp
does not.
I already tried the cleartext patch for leopard (for using clear text
login and password). Unfortunately it does not change a thing.

My questions are:
Do I have to do additional settings on the LS Pro ?
Or may I not activate smb and afp at the same time ?
Or are there additional settings nedded under system configuration
/network on Mac OS ?

Thanks in advance for any feedback, i really dont have any more ideas
left ...

Hi,

It used to be the fact that the LS if there was no contents in the drive
managed to get itself an IP address from a DHCP server, or a default IP
address - which should be in the archives as I can't remember it now.
This happened to me with the LS120, which I had to replace the disk in,
and the firmware installer worked on it once it had the IP address.

Andrew.

If you can see only half of the partition, chances are your HDD controller can
probably not
handle sizes < 128 GB. Get a recent external USB 2.0 case or the like.

Then boot into a Linux Live CD and run fix_ext2magic, see http://www.nas-

Hi Andre,
This could be the reason as it's a rather old PC. Will get a USB 2.0

Hi,

I've recently upgraded my Link Station from 120GB to 500GB. The installation went ok, and I have managed to transfer the data from the original drive. However if I have the unit sleep overnight, often when it powers up the following morning the unit goes into diagnostic mode. If I power cycle a couple of time the drive usually then boot ok.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem, or able to suggest a fix? At the moment the unit is running 24hrs a day.

thanks

Tried this utility a few times now. First thing that happens is that
the mouse stop working. I proceed by using the mousepad on the
notebook. Then this message come up, "Since there is not any
partition of another type than Windows or DOS (FAT or NTFS), nothing
can be configured here".

When plugging in the external HD in to the USB port, I get
"USB PORT NOT RECOGNISED' message

I also noticed that this utility is called "Ext2 Installable File
System 1.10c".
During installation it refers to ext.2 file system and
not ext3.

Am I using the wrong program? Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks

Thanks Paul. I fitted an old 40GB into a cheapo case and hooked it up

Maybe the 500 draws too much energy, or takes too long to spin up. I would
delete all
partitions from the HDD, run the firmware updater twice, and see if the problem
persists.

I just upgraded the firmware in my LinkStation Pro to 1.11. Now I've got no afp
access and
get an error code -5014 when I try. afp sees the linkstation but fails when I
try to mount the
shares. I can ftp to it, however and the shares show up.

I'm on OS X. Any clue what I need to do to access these shares?

I read something at this site:

http://lists.apple.com/archives/macosx-interop/2007/Jul/msg00001.html

that indicates that deleting .AppleDB might do the trick. Anyone know?

Hi,

I have just been through this exercise myself.

I have a Kurobox running Gentoo with v2.6 kernel, I am not sure how
you would go about doing this without a full OS on it though.

I tried ushare but didnt work, but mediatomb does.

You need to install mediatomb and build this from scratch, at least
for Gentoo, it has quite a few prerequistes that you need to install
first. More info can be found from

http://mediatomb.cc/pages/documentation

You need to make a couple of changes to the config.xml when you
finally get everything installed, which can be found

http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1895315&forum_id=440751

Its pretty cool, since mediatomb is open source and runs on Linux,
unlike the other solutions that seem to work.

I can watch divx films and listen to music. I also have a PSP and you
can remote play the content from the server via the PS3 to the PSP!!

Cheers,

David

I am having a wee bit of trouble understanding here? Is the software
you talking about for the PS3 or linkstation?

To break it down I have a linkstation HD-HLAN hard wired into a
router, it plugs directly into the router and requires no PC. I want
a PS3 which I will hardwire into the router. I thought (at least
hoped) you could just point the PS3 to the link stations IP address
and tell it where the media stuff lives and then using the PS3 just
open up folders and look at pictures, music and movies.

Is this not the case, does this mean I need to shove linux on the
PS3, which to be truthful I can't be arsed with. Does anyone else
find it a bit frustrating that these things don't just work out the
box and you have to keep frigging around with, loading software, to
get it to work the way the consumer wants.

If the Linkstation is running a media server like twonkyvision or Wizd the PS3 can playback most audio and most video depending on the format. I have a KuroHG and the PS3 sees it and plays back HD videos and MP3 audio. I am using the latest Twonkyvision 4.4.3 version. The PS3 can not on it’s own browse network shares on PC’s or NAS devices unless they are running a UPNP or DNLA server which organizes and presents a standard interface to the PS3.

Good Luck,

Gary

The above link goes to the download page for NAS devices including the LinkStation I am not sure which version you need. You need to know which CPU your Linkstation has installed. Perhaps someone else in the group could be more helpful. I can only say that it works fine for me for most videos and all my 8000 MP3s
