Hi,

I have just been through this exercise myself.

I have a Kurobox running Gentoo with v2.6 kernel, I am not sure how
you would go about doing this without a full OS on it though.

I tried ushare but didnt work, but mediatomb does.

You need to install mediatomb and build this from scratch, at least
for Gentoo, it has quite a few prerequistes that you need to install
first. More info can be found from

http://mediatomb.cc/pages/documentation

You need to make a couple of changes to the config.xml when you
finally get everything installed, which can be found

http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1895315&forum_id=440751

Its pretty cool, since mediatomb is open source and runs on Linux,
unlike the other solutions that seem to work.

I can watch divx films and listen to music. I also have a PSP and you
can remote play the content from the server via the PS3 to the PSP!!

Cheers,

David

I am having a wee bit of trouble understanding here? Is the software
you talking about for the PS3 or linkstation?

To break it down I have a linkstation HD-HLAN hard wired into a
router, it plugs directly into the router and requires no PC. I want
a PS3 which I will hardwire into the router. I thought (at least
hoped) you could just point the PS3 to the link stations IP address
and tell it where the media stuff lives and then using the PS3 just
open up folders and look at pictures, music and movies.

Is this not the case, does this mean I need to shove linux on the
PS3, which to be truthful I can't be arsed with. Does anyone else
find it a bit frustrating that these things don't just work out the
box and you have to keep frigging around with, loading software, to
get it to work the way the consumer wants.

If the Linkstation is running a media server like twonkyvision or Wizd the PS3 can playback most audio and most video depending on the format. I have a KuroHG and the PS3 sees it and plays back HD videos and MP3 audio. I am using the latest Twonkyvision 4.4.3 version. The PS3 can not on it’s own browse network shares on PC’s or NAS devices unless they are running a UPNP or DNLA server which organizes and presents a standard interface to the PS3.

Good Luck,

Gary

The above link goes to the download page for NAS devices including the LinkStation I am not sure which version you need. You need to know which CPU your Linkstation has installed. Perhaps someone else in the group could be more helpful. I can only say that it works fine for me for most videos and all my 8000 MP3s

Sorry, for confusing you.

Yes, as Gary says you should be using a media server to provide media
to the PS3, it cant connected to a network share from the Linkstation.

You actually need to buy Twonkyvision (this is why I didnt go down
this route) check out this really had to find page for NAS devices for
supported devices,

http://twonkyvision.de/Download/TwonkyMedia/TM4Technicians.html

Its not clear that wizd supports the PS3's DLNA, but as Gary says
Twonkyvision does.

Ta,

David

Hello,

I just joined so this may have already been said, but you don't have
to use the client utility on the CD. I have the linkstation (non-pro)
HD-H250 and on buffalo's website it said I was using the latest client
utility.

I downloaded the Linkstation Pro utility software and it works great,
plus speeds things up, at least I think it has.
The version is 1.2.0 Windows Nas Navigator Utility

The old 250GB WD drive is failing in my LinkStation, the bearings are
squealing, so I replaced it with a new drive of the same size and
manufacture.

I powered up the box and hit the reset button. I have zero access to
the box but it does respond to pings. I was hoping the internal
firmware would format the drive and install the default file system
from flash rom and I would be all set to go, but no dice.

How do you setup a new HDD? I have several x86 Linux boxes, Fedora 3-5-
8 and OpenSuse 10.2 - 10.3, sitting around I could put the drive in if
necessary. I would like to do the setup with the drive installed and
working off the internal CPU board if I can.

You could hook both the old and new drives up to one of your Linux boxes and use dd if=/dev/XXX of=/dev/XXX bs=XXXX ( Replacing XXXs with your specific devices and setting bs=1024) to make a duplicate of the old drive.  I think that might work but others on this group are much more knowledgeable but it might be at least one option and you would keep anything that was on your old drive since it was basically a mechanical problem. If you default the device and it rebuilds I you would also lose any hacks like telnet access and other improvements you might have made.

Good Luck

Subject: [LinkStation_General] Setup New HDD replacing failed drive?

Hi,

If you can ping the box you are probably in the recovery mode and need to load the firmware on using the firmware updater.  The system will try using DHCP to get an IP address, if it can’t find a DHCP server it defaults to a 192.168.x.x IP.  You use the default username/password to connect to the box in the firmware upgrade program – HTTP or file access won’t work.

I did this on an LS1 and it worked fine.

Andrew.

Good Luck

Hi,

Just bought a linkstation Pro (LS-GL) with a harddrive of 750GB
(seagate barracuda). I put freelink on it, and i'm having problems to
let my harddrive spindown after let's say 5 minutes ...

If i give commands with hdparm, its result is always like this :
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(setidle1) failed: Invalid argument

All other commands that I try give just the same output ...

Is there somebody who can tell me which parameters I have to change to
which value in order to let the fan spin down when temperature is low
enough, and when getting hotter, let it start again ?

All help is appreciated !!!

Bart

I think, it is what you currently get now for most commands to SATA disks
or even to (P)ATA disks handled by libata. I just don't remember what was
the solution for this. Perhaps, there is another tool to talk to those.
Maybe a tool that's used for SCSI discs. Try to google for SATA hdparm or
similar...

hello,

i tried to upgrade the firmware in my LS Home server.
it went almost fine until the end, but at the end there was a message
that told me, that there was an error....

i tried it 3x and now the box doesn't boot anymore, after a few
seconds the LS switches off and the red DIAG LED is flashing 5x (Flash
memory error).

How can i get my LS back into operation and how can i access the files
at the LS?

Hi everyone,

The Linkstation Pro finally offers great compatibility with
Macs thanks to Netatalk 2.0.3 (speaking of which, does anyone have an
updated URL to the software versions included with the LS Pro?).
However, unless I'm mistaken, it doesn't offer Bonjour/Rendezvous
zero-configuration networking. I added this easily to my Linkstation
PPC, but after perusing the Wiki, I'm still not sure that this has
been done or can be done to the Linkstation Pro.

Does anyone know? Otherwise I might have to consider getting
a LaCie Ethernet BigDisk.

Speaking of compatibility with Macs - I'm having a terrible time connecting via
AFP to two
different Pro 500GLs from several different macs all running different OSes
(10.3,10.4,10.5). I'm tried the .AppleDB rebuild hack - but that hasn't worked.
Has
anytone figured out a solution? I'm running firmware 1.11. Will 1.12a help at
all? Or
something else? Will a Netatalk upgrade help? Thx

What specifically is going wrong? How are you rebuilding the .AppleDB?

Since the LS Pro runs the latest version of Netatalk (2.0.3), no
upgrade is possible.

Does your LS Pro appear under "Devices" on your Mac running Leopard?

I tried to flash my Dd-H250LAN up to 1.47 but it returned a "failure"
message and since then (obviously) I cannot access the drive at all...

The Airnavi sees it but reports the firmware as --------- (i.e. it
does not have any) I have tried a few more times to update the
firmware. I'd be more than happy to revert back to the olsd one that
was on there - any ideas how?

The Linkstations were originally designed to be part of a local area network (LAN) of computers to provide a shared source of file storage between them.

Many (including me) on this Yahoo group and the Linkstation Wiki have enhanced the features of the Linkstation products to do much more than this.

In 1969:

1. Humans landed on the moon.
2. UNIX was invented.
3. The first four nodes of the ARPAnet went up.
4. Linus Torvalds was born.

As of today, the moon landing has taken us nowhere. The other items were beginnings of things more revolutionary.

Please use the search function and check out the Linkstation WIKI.

Do some research first, then ask questions.

Hi Marc -

I'm getting errors like -5014. I can see the box, connect to it,
it'll show me the shares, but I can't actually mount any of them.

I rebuilt the .AppleDB files by deleting them from the box via the
command line as root.

It's all very strange.

I assume that you restarted your Linkstation, or at least restarted
the afp client on your Linkstation?

How did you hack in in the first place?
