I used Twonkyvision successfully on my Linkstation for several years. After
having to rebuild my Linkstation following a drive failure I installed firefly
rather than twonkyvision. I now have a need to run Twonky again.
I downloaded the NAS installer from Twonky's website (see Link below). It
appears to install ok and I can see the twonkymedia processes running. However,
I cannot open the web page or connect from my media player (BT Internet Radio).
netstat -an shows that the LS is listening on port 9000.

- Has anybody else og this working?
- Have I missed something?
- Does anybody have an older version of Twonky NAS installer? (I'm sorry I
cannot remember which version of Twonky I had running before).
(Note, I have a key for Twonky).
I tried Twonky on my LS2 (Mips) and found it worked for several days
but then would stop responding. I saw the same - netstat showing that
the port was listening. I tried configuring Twonky to use a different
port, but it still stopped responding after a few minutes. My LS2 is
running OpenLink.
I have stopped usisng Twonky and no use the freeware MediaTomb. You can
get a staically linked binary, ie it runs as-is on the Linkstation - it
does not require any shared libraries, from:
The LS1 (PPC) file is
mediatomb-static-0.11.0-r1-linux-uclibc-ppce300c2.tar.gz and the one
for the LS2 (MIPS) is mediatomb-static-0.11.0-r2-linux-uclibc-mips2el.tar.gz.

Hello,
I have a LS-CL 650 F/W 1.02 and have searched the wiki site for
details of how to install OpenLink, but couldn't find any details.
Could somebody answers a few questions, please?
1> Is OpenLink compatible with LS-CL 650?
2> Is it PowerPc or MIPSel?
3> Is it possible to install Bit Torrent SDK?
Thanks
Darren
Hi,
I need to copy all rsync related files to my IOMEGA 250G NAS. Could somebody
with a PPC based linkstation LS do the following
ldd rsync
then attach rsync and all those .so files it depends on.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Hi there,
I just bought a network music player and wanted to install a media server on my
Linkstation. As far as I know, it's the PPC one.
For the installation I need root access. But I have a newer firmware on it. So I
would like to downgrade but I don't have the file.
Could anybody provide me firmware lower or equal to 1.45?
Or is there any other way to get root access?
Cheers,
Eric
As I recall, you can take advantage of the fact that the webroot
directory is completely insecure on these things to execute arbitrary
scripts. I copied /etc/passwd to my main storage directory, edited it to
do something to the root password, and then used a script to copy it
back. Worked well.

I have a a HD-HLAN1 v1 (LS1). So mine is a PPC based one. I have the
Freelink firmware on mine and have the 2.6 kernel too. I have installed
MediaTomb as the UPnP music server and have a Philips SA5220 wireless
music player that works great with it. If you use the 2.6 kernel then
MediaTomb is able to detect immediately new MP3 files copied onto the
LinkStataion and it updates it's database automatically. If you stay
with the 2.4 kernel then MediaTomb is still great, but the automatic
database update when new MP3 files are added does not happen.
So, once you have checked that you have this PPC based LS1 model, get
the firmware you want to try from:
If you want the LinKStation to run much like the original Buffalo
formware, with the their web interface, but be able to login with root
access then ther eis the OpenLink firmware -
http://buffalo.nas-central.org/index.php/Category:OpenLink
The wiki has a section on installing MediaTomb on the different
LinkStation firmwares.

John

Hi,
I see on the Buffalo website there are two different versions of the
LS Pro - one old model which seems to have Firmware 1.15, which is the
one I have, and a new model with larger drives with FW 1.20. Does
anyone know if the firmware is interchangeable (I think I know the
answer already). I would like to use the Buffalo Bit torrent client.
Thanks.
Andrew.
I have an old PPC Linkstation that is somewhat broken... (search the
archives for my name to see the nature of the problems). I am cleaning
house, and am willing to give this machine to anyone who will pay the
shipping.
I'm in the US, and I'm guessing that will be about $10-$15 in the US,
maybe $25 overseas. That's just a guess, so don't hold me to that.
The unit is in physically good condition. I replaced the fan, and will
include the original fan if it's still in the box.
I am offering it without hard drive, and without any promise that it
will work. I can accept payment via PayPal.
Is anyone interested? If so, please reply off-list.
Chris
I am interested, please let me know if still available.

I've just swapped out my 300gb drive for a 750gb drive.
I've cloned my old drive on a PC via Acronis True Image. I've kept the small 200mb partitions the same size, and the data has been retained in a 278Gb partition.
How do I expand this partition to use the remainder of the 750Gb?
Probably best to wipe the drive clean and let the firmware
upgrade program create the partitions.
Thanks.
Andrew.

I pulled the old drive and put in a new 750gb unit. When I power up the Linkstation Beeps a two tone beep for quite some time and the error light flashes 6 times - i.e. Hard Drive problem.
I can't see the drive via the Internet Explorer or from the NasNavigator2, how do I reinitialise the new drive. (It currently has no partitions, and I've deleted these via my PC.

Download the firmware upgrade pack for your Linkstation via the
Buffalo website.
Ensure you have DHCP enabled. When the Linkstation is
connected, it should pick up a DHCP address from your router.
Turn off your Windows firewall and run the upgrade utility. It
should find the Linkstation there. It may take two times running this to get
it working – first for the partition creation and then for the upload of the
firmware partition itself.
I have done this a couple of times and it works ok.
Thanks.
Andrew.

Firmware 2.24
Either reset to defaults after the update
or turn turn off any services you dont need
as /etc/melco/info doesnt get overwritten unless is doesnt exist
so all services will be default on after the update

Hi
I've tried a search and don't get much information.
Whats the biggest HDD I can swap the 250GB one I have to? Is there an upper
limit the hardware can control or just the limit it's hard to get anything
greater than 500gb in IDE form any more?
I recently tried to attach an external USB drive 1 TB...which the Linkstation
HD-HLAN160, (or similar) could not mount. I then manually formated a 500GB EXT3
partition using Gparted...and the Linkstation could not mount it. Is it just
too big? Anything (within reason) that can be done to use this external drive
with my full linkstation?
And sort of related...Is it worth my effort to attempt to put in a larger drive
inside the Linkstation, or at 5 years old, should I just replace it?
According the the manual for the Linkstation HD or HG LAN series drives, you must format the drive through the Linkstation while it is attached to the USB port. Attach the drive, and navigate to the USB Disk Setup section of the software and select USB Disk Setup. This should format the drive (I don't have this model, so I am going from the manual).
On the Linkstations that I have (LS-GL 750 and QuadStation) you must format the drive in this way. In fact with the Quad-Station, which has two USB ports, you must alway connect the external drive to the same USB port that it was formatted on, or it will not work. When you connect the drive to the Linkstation, it should be recognizable, but not accessible by the drive until you format it through the Linkstation.
From the manual:
An
attached USB Disk can be configured as an additional shared folder for
additional storage space. The attached USB Disk must be formatted by the
LinkStation before it can be used on LinkStation. If a USB Disk is attached
to LinkStation, it must be attached to the rear USB Port.
Link to the manual is here is you don't have a copy: http://cdn.cloudfiles.mosso.com/c85091/HD-HGLAN_Manual_web.pdf

Slight correction to my previous post. The USB drive is formatted by going to the Maintenance section, and then choosing the Select a Disk to Format option.

I had a poke into the bittorrent executable due to no info from buffalo on the
update
Firmware 2.26 BitTorrent SDK 2.0 June 18th 2009
Firmware 2.22-2.25 BitTorrent SDK 2.0 Apr 25th 2009
Firmware 2.20 BitTorrent SDK 2.0 July 25th 2008

Firmware 2.27
Updated WebAccess 2.1 to 2.2
Updated lighttpd-1.4.13 (ssl) to lighttpd-1.4.19 (ssl) For WebAccess
This wasnt released with 2.26 due to thinking there was a new bug
it turns out there was a bug in 2.0 and 2.1 also
HTTPS/SSL Encryption turned on and uploading large files example
LS-DHGL_FW_227-shmod7.rar
results in the WebAccess crashing small files work, no Encryption works
IE8 works either way
This was confirmed by testing Buffalo's latest WebAccess firmware
HS-DHGL_211_101b.zip that runs WebAccess 2.0
The result was the same with my Firmware 2.26
WebAccess isnt coded that well by Buffalo the logfile is a joke
I have fixed up the error log slightly compared to Buffalo's release
due to updating components and such
but im not going in and fixing the HTTPS/Firefox crash and error log anymore
thats for buffalo to do not me!!
if you want this fixed goto http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/bd-p/0101
and tell them you are running the latest HS-DHGL_211_101b firmware
and when HTTPS/SSL Encryption is on Webaccess crashes uploading large files with
Firefox
on a side note the heat on the top of my v2 linkstation I mentioned with
Firmware 2.25
is down to the psu on v2 linkstations running hotter than v1 linkstations
and is nothing to do with apps
http://www.mediafire.com/file/etlgjegjy0e/LS-DHGL_FW_227-shmod7.rar
Firmware 2.28
Fixed BitTorrent Web setup menu
Fixed BitTorrent Remember settings on reboot
Added favicon.ico
Updated to BusyBox v1.16.0 (2010-02-06 04:21:28 CST)
Added link for netstat
Added link for traceroute

If you want to unsubscribe from email notifications of new posts, you can either
follow these instructions:

Or just head to http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/LinkStation_General and
click "Edit Membership" along the top after logging in.
You can adjust there your membership, and even what kind of email notifications
you get, e.g. a Daily Digest of communications.

I was wondering if anyone can help me achieve adding a Media server to my Linkstation. I have a Roku music player and always have to power up a PC to hear music from my roughly 50 gigabytes of MP3's. The Roku uses upnp to play music. My linkstation is the original ppc based HD-H120LAN but has a 200 Gig hard drive since the original 120 Gig crashed. The software level is 1.47 (the latest from Buffalo). i have read a lot about people who have done this, but there does not seem to be a "cookbook" receipe. There seems to be a lot of media servers and a lot of literature on how to install. Any help, especially in a cookbook form would be greatly appreciated. thank you, Lou
I've been peeking at it for *years,* and was just setting up my Linkstation
DH250GL with Freelink when it went down.
Using a page in my browser's cache, I was able to finish the installation of
Freelink. But there were some tweaks still to make (most specifically, getting
NFS set up).
Did the site run out of money? Is it just a hardware failure? Does anyone here
know?
Thanks!
