Subject: Add a Media Server to my LinkStation
lou_phillips
Send Email Send Email

I was wondering if anyone can help me achieve adding a Media server to my Linkstation. I have a Roku music player and always have to power up a PC to hear music from my roughly 50 gigabytes of MP3's. The Roku uses upnp to play music. My linkstation is the original ppc based HD-H120LAN but has a 200 Gig hard drive since the original 120 Gig crashed. The software level is 1.47 (the latest from Buffalo). i have read a lot about people who have done this, but there does not seem to be a "cookbook" receipe. There seems to be a lot of media servers and a lot of literature on how to install. Any help, especially in a cookbook form would be greatly appreciated. thank you, Lou

I've been peeking at it for *years,* and was just setting up my Linkstation
DH250GL with Freelink when it went down.

Using a page in my browser's cache, I was able to finish the installation of
Freelink. But there were some tweaks still to make (most specifically, getting
NFS set up).

Did the site run out of money? Is it just a hardware failure? Does anyone here
know?

Thanks!

Seems fine for me. I even tried visiting a non-cached page and confirmed its up
and functional.

http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Add_a_Serial_port_to_the_PowerPC_Linkstation

There could have been some outage, but all looks fine at this time.

Cheers,
Tim

my setup:
- Windows 7
- Gigabit network: SMC switch + CAT6 cables
- LS-QL with 4 x 2TB set to RAID5

1. Music server:
I would like to install Squeezebox Server onto it. Does anyone know how to do
it? http://fieldnetworks.com/slim/linkstation.html only talks about other
models, not LS-QL.

2. Transfer rate:
I'm getting 10-12 MB/s writing speed from PC to NAS. Anyway to improve this? I
tried using Tera Copy but no improvement.

I've a NAS Buffalo LinkStation Live HS-DHGL

I've installed a Western Digital WD5000AAKS drive in the unit and rebuilt the firmware etc etc.

I've setup shares and can copy data to them. But after about ten minutes I can no longer access the shares. I can still see th4e NAS in the Navigator, and can access the printer, and Info Share, and the Web Client.

If I reboot the NAS then I can see the shares again, but even when I'm writing data I loose access.

I think the Western Digital WD5000AAKS is going to sleep and then can't be seen by the NAS itself.

Do you know if there is a setting the the Web Interface to stop the drive sleeping?

Can I prevent the WD500AAKS going to sleep?

Thanks

First post, so be gentle!!

My sole objective is just to get a Logitech Squeezebox system runninhg from a
recently purchased Buffalo Linksatation Live (Type LS-CHL V2D08 , 1Tb). It has
firmware v 1.24. The Linkstation shows up on my screen, and the Memeo back up
seems to be happily working away. I know next to nothing about Linux, but have
got to use it a bit in my frstrated efforts so far, see below.

The rest of the network is two computers both running XP. The Buffalo software
has only been loaded onto my computer, so far.

I managed with the help of Buffalo Technology to finally get web access,
clicking on the icon, though I had to use IE instead of my usual Firefox.

I then followed a detailed article in user forums> third party hardware at
slimdevices.com. The article was "Even easier Squeezebox install on Buffalo
Linkstations Pro and Live" by user Tired Legs. I got as far as running
acp_commander.jar using the cmd.exe box, in order to get telnet access. In spite
of positive return messages (the last said "you can now telnet to your box as
user 'root' providing no/an empty password") I have been unable to use telnet.

I nwas directed to other forums and found this connection there.

When I enter "telnet" followed by the IP address of the unit, in the cmd.exe
window, the response is "Could not open connection to the host on port
23:connect failed"

The windows firewall was disabled at the time. I have read of others getting the
port 23 response.

I have very little experience with Linux but am good at following instructions!

Any bright ideas?

long ago I wrote this guide on installing ubuntu on the box.

http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Ubuntu_installation_guide

this is the first step. You can also use debian, with should be simpler to install ...

ok so i just upgraded my lspro to a new 2tb hd and decided to change to the
steviewonder firmware after reading up on it....the install went just fine. the
main reason i wanted it was for the twonky integration. first few times i had
no issues getting to the config page for the twonky software but now i cant get
into it for the life of me.
i tried everything but nothing is working. i reset root password and checked
the ini file with vi and its properly set to enalbleweb=2. i dont know what
else to try? i keep getting the red screen when i go to the config or setup
page which says "Access is restricted to MediaServer configuration!"
anyone have any other ideas for me to try?
i can access the webbrowse page just fine and it shows my data from the nas but
i would like to tweak the folders its looking at and cant do that without access
to the setup or config pages...
any help would be appreciated and thanks for the great firmware!

Hi Massimo,
No problem, HS-DHLG supports up to 2TB (most of Buffalo NAS does even they don't state that), I tested with Seagate 2TB LP and it works fine.

BTW: what is the best script to download from 1-click-hosting so far? I tried plowshare and found it's working fine on HS-DHGL but it doesn't have WebUI, just command line only.

Rgds,
H.

Hi Massimo,
Make sure that you have this line in your LSUpdater.ini (is it really HS-DHGL or LS-GL?)

ProductID = 0x000A

Greetings,
I had purchased a new LS-QL/R5 1TB NAS, as i already have a 8TB model which I
like, so i bought the 1TB with the intention to upgrade the drive capacity.
Unfortunately I didn't do my research, and ended up blowing away the partitions
on the included 250GB drives, and found out that my 4 1TB drives wouldn't do
anything without the OS loaded on them, and that I should have changed drives
one at a time.
Of course, Buffalo will not provide advice as the warantee is voided.

I have attached the NAS to my PC, and see that it only gets the 192.168.11.150
address for a limited time, then it is unreachable.

Is there any hope to revive this NAS?

Thanks,

Hi mcp,
Search around for the Recovery packages for Linkstation Quad, then you can get it setup from scratch (it supports 4 x 2TB HDD), remember that even this model can run with HDD < 4, but it requires that you should have 4 HDD at the moment reviving it.

The unit ARM will try to get the kernel & init ramdisk from 192.168.11.1 for ~ 4 seconds during boot up so you can revive it.

If you're using Linkstation Quad, you can that Linkstation Quad format 1 new HDD (take out 1 HDD from old Quad, boot it, go to Web Admin and format the new HDD, shutdown the Quad, take out the new HDD and put the old HDD back to your 8TB Quad - the new HDD now can boot from any Quad, you can boot it and use it to format another 3 HDDs :). This trick only works if your 8TB are running in Single disk mode (individual disks), it's in RAID, it won't work, don't remove HDD or it will break your current RAID.

Currently, I'm using 3 Linkstation Quad :), hope this helps.

Thanks and rgds,
Dang Hai

Thanks Dang.
I will try what you suggest. I greatly appreciate your response.
I did get a little further last night, before I read your reply. The new NAS did
get a DHCP address, so I was able to upgrade the firmware. When I try to
recreate the RAID with the 4 250GB drives it tells me that 2 drives have failed.
I will buy 4 new 2TB drives, and try your suggestion as soon as I have the
budget.
All the best,
mcp

Dang,
This morning I was able to reformat the original 250GB drives and created a new
RAID-5 set. I guess I just needed as little patience.
As soon as I can I will do the same with the 2TB drives.
Thanks again,
mcp

MCP,

I wouldn't necessarily trust that application alone in determining your drives' state.

If you can, you should connect them to a linux system and run some tests on them such as smartctl and fsck

Maybe you can format the drives and remove the partition tables.

I haven't been active in LS / TS recoveries, but I remember in the past that the firmware updater would need to be run twice, the first time would fail but would create the partition tables, the second attempt would get the device back to normal,  have you tried?

Tim

Thanks Dang.
I will try what you suggest. I greatly appreciate your response.
I did get a little further last night, before I read your reply. The new NAS did get a DHCP address, so I was able to upgrade the firmware. When I try to recreate the RAID with the 4 250GB drives it tells me that 2 drives have failed.
I will buy 4 new 2TB drives, and try your suggestion as soon as I have the budget.
All the best,
mcp

I might can buy a cheap LinkStation Live.

But I really need nfs support and mostly not the media server whatever things on
it.
(read a lot that it will slow down the linkstation very much)

Also I read here and in forums that I can use the files from "Linkstation Pro -
8USB & 2SATA" to install on the LS Live.

So currently I'm unsure what to do... :/

So what to update first? LS up to Version 1.15? (which also includes nfs)

Maybe then the Dual drive? (OK I'll have only one 1TG disk)

Anything I missed so far?

How to get rid of the media services on the LS?
