Dennis,

I *much* prefer the BuzzBoost look, in addition to the fact that the Grazr tool's loading time is quite a bit longer.

Honestly... all of the themes I purchased did not upload as I expected and now I have to go to a designer to get them to do what I want...

I suggest... stick with a couple good free themes.. and go from there....

Everyone is goo-goo-eyed over DIYThemes.com. That's Chris Pearson's site that offers the Thesis theme. Also, http://themeforest.net/ has lots of premium themes.

I'd think twice about WPRemix, which is what I used for my book site. I'm not thrilled with it and will soon make a change.

I guess Antonio Capo is on this list - and he mentioned this move of mine - along with David Armano and Jeremiah Owyang's new career moves - refering to me as a Social Media star :)

Hi Miki,

I just came across something that might be exactly what you are looking for:
http://openmind.sourceforge.net/default.html

Do you know your customer?

Many product companies make product decisions with a flawed understanding of what’s important to their customers. Focus groups, customer advisory boards, and one-on-one conversations all provide data points to determine customer wants and needs. But these approaches make broad assumptions about your users based upon a limited set of anecdotal evidence.

OpenMind enables you to build an online community with your customers and partners, allowing you to:

    * Find out what features and improvements your customers as a whole would value most
    * Engage in an online discussion with your users to gain deeper insights into their needs
    * Communicate upcoming releases, closing the loop on customer feedback – your customers can see exactly which suggestions became committed features of a future release based upon community feedback
    * Gain deeper insights into specific targeted topic areas through user surveys
    * Allow customers to engage in online discussion with each other and with you via online forums

OpenMind uses a unique allocation-based point voting system that creates an environment in which customers will make the same type of trade-off decisions that you do. It’s not enough to know whether a feature request is a good idea or not – you need to know which ideas your customers value most.

Product managers make difficult decisions every day – part of their job is to assess trade-offs in order to determine what subset of possible features and improvements to address in a particular release based upon a limited number of resources. For example, the product manager must himself or herself the question: “If I have ten items on a list of possible features for a release and I can only do six of them, which six would provide the most value to my customers?”

OpenMind’s allocations create an environment in which your customers make the same tradeoffs that you do. If I can only vote a limited number of times, I will choose wisely where to spend my votes rather than indicating every possible idea that sounds interesting to me.

Hi Bob, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

The target buyers are founders and CEOs of young companies who are looking for a formalized stock option allocation method, as opposed to doing it on the fly.

We plan to invite influencers who are interested in both the technology and the philosophy of using options fairly as an incentive, and anyone else interested in the concept, to watch the product demo and then comment. We will not monitor comments (except for language and spam) and if someone says it's terrible idea that is their privilege. There is a brief registration process, similar to commenting on a blog.

I already write a company blog (www.MAPpingCompanySuccess.com) that can be used to feed into the Option Sanity site.

If we use the blog format it will be "inside out" with any registered user able to create posts for their comments or comment on someone else's as opposed to blogging about the product.

You are right that we're not looking to lead the conversation, we're looking for product commentary from a variety of visitors.

I appreciate your questions, they help me verbalize what has been in my mind for too long.

Thanks,
Miki

I tend to think forums would be more attractive to a more tech-savvy audience. I also think forums denote a somewhat more "egalitarian" communications forum.

With a blog, there's the opportunity to contribute, but the perception seems to me to be more "we lead the conversation, but it's a conversation, not a monologue", where forums seem more "let's all chat."

My $0.02 before taking off for Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada.

A blog you have control over the content and are responsible for the regular posting to draw readership and commentary. With a forum, once you have a few members and hopefully some conversation started, then your role becomes more of a moderator status and perhaps conversation stimulator, rather than someone who has to write all the articles.

A combination of both would work well, if you have the time and commitment available.

Subject: [LinkedinBloggers] blog or forum, which is best?

We are releasing a SAAS product  later this week and an important part of the marketing will be bring business influencers and people to the site to see the demo and rate/comment on the product.

The website is on a joomla platform and our developers say that there is both a blog and forum that integrate well with joomla. I'd appreciate your opinions as to which would be more attractive to business users.

Here is a brief description of the product,

Option Sanity™, is the easy and inexpensive SAAS way to predict dilution, strengthen compliance and translate your philosophy and beliefs in merit, fairness, transparency and authenticity into action when allocating employee stock options. All this plus time-saving reports and easy control and tracking of employee options as your company grows.

Thanks,
Miki

I would value some comment on a current dilemma with some 404 Page Not Found results in the Google Webmaster Tools  crawl reports for one of my sites.

The admin of the former host of my site had created a .htaccess file with the following:

# BEGIN WordPress

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

# END WordPress

But Webmaster tools is picking up some pages as 404 not found, from an earlier time when the blog was in a /blog subdirectory. Most or all of them seem to be blog post backups in html format, with year and month specifications, in an archives folder that did not get transferred with the site files.

Typical format is http://www.mysite.com/blog/_Archives/XXXX/YY/filename.html

Is there some additional or alternative code I can insert to deal with that?

Whenever I've raised this in the past, the admin of the former hosting service told me not to worry about it, but at the very least it's not tidy and I wonder if this list of pages not found has had something to do with the site's lower ranking lately.

Advice or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks Paul! I'll work on that. And thanks to Francois and Jason for their information, too!

Hi Miki,

Then there's no question... a blog is most useful. Fora are only useful for when users need to create separate discussion threads and would not, IMHO, be beneficial for this situation.

However, I would suggest you also use twitter and facebook to post snippets that lead to your blog posts.
Try creating posts that make people want to know more or ask a leading question, and include a link (shortened) to where they can satisfy their curiosity.

Best,
Paul

Hi Paul, As usual, I didn't explain completely enough.

I already have a blog that I'll be writing about the product on. My developers can set the blog up for people to access the admin to post comments, etc., more or less like a forum. So either would be for marketing purposes, i.e., comments, questions, etc. I'm not going to edit the demo comments, if someone wants to say they hate it they can say that. I believe that will make for more authentic evaluations (or am I nuts?)

The actual SAAS will be a private community, with it's own discussion area and bug reporting.

Hi Miki,

The short answer... both.
You will need the blog to disseminate information and receive comments ON the product but you will need the forum(s) for bug reports and comments ABOUT the product.

Best,
Paul

I agree with both comments - if you are dedicated to creating value in the Forum I'd start it sooner rather than later though, you gotta start sometime.  It takes a lot of work to create the conversation.

If you are looking for one or the other, I'd say hands-down go with a blog.
