Malaysia's manufacturing sales continued to register strong double-
digit growth into February 2008, recording a higher growth of 21.1%
or RM7.7 billion to RM44.2 billion from RM36.5 billion in the
corresponding month last year, according to the latest release from
the Department of Statistics (DOS).
The higher sales value was mainly due to expansion in five major
manufacturing industries - refined petroleum products (56.9%),
computers and computer peripherals (25.4%), other basic industrial
chemicals except fertilizers and nitrogen compounds (35.0%), basic
iron and steel products (38.9%) and semi-conductor devices (16.7%).
Sales in February 2008, however, declined by 6.0% or RM2.9 billion
from RM47.1 billion in January 2008.
For the first two months of the year, the manufacturing sector
recorded an increase of RM14.1 billion or 18.3% in sales value RM91.3
billion over the corresponding period last year, which was at RM 77
billion.
The total number of employees engaged in the manufacturing sector in
February 2008 increased by 1.7% or 18,017 persons to 1,096,004
persons. However the total workers employed in the manufacturing
sector fell slightly by 0.5% or 5,262 persons in February from the
previous month's total employment of 1,101,266 persons.
Malaysia's productivity, as measured by the average sales value per
employee, in the first two months of 2008 registered an increase of
16.4% or RM11,714.60 to RM83,330.20.
