Malaysian Manufacturing sales in June 2008 recorded a double-digit
growth of 17.8 % or RM7.8 billion to reach RM51.7 billion against the
corresponding month in 2007, according to the latest release from the
Department of Statistics (DOS).
The year-on-year expansion was mainly driven by significant increases
in five major manufacturing industries –the refined petroleum
products (64.7%); basic iron and steel products (57.2%); other basic
industrial chemicals except fertilizers and nitrogen compounds
(32.4%); computers and computer peripherals (11.3%) and television
and radio receivers, sound or video recording or reproducing
apparatus, and associated goods (29.6%).
Month-on month, sales value in the manufacturing sector added 5.9% or
RM2.9 billion from RM48.8 billion in May 2008.
For the first six months of the year, the manufacturing sales also
recorded a double-digit growth of 15.9% or RM39.4 billion to RM287.5
billion as against the same period in 2007.
The total number of employees engaged in the manufacturing sector in
June 2008 dropped marginally by 1.1% or 12,046 persons to 1,090,487
persons, year-on-year. Month-on-month, the total workers employed in
the manufacturing sector in June increased slightly by 0.05% or 464
persons.
Productivity or average sales value per employee in June, 2008 grew
19.0% to RM47,392.42, over the same month last year. Month-on-month,
productivity in June 2008 also increased 5.8% while on a cumulative
basis, productivity for the first six months of the year rose 17.2%
to RM263,676.61 compared with the corresponding period last year.
