Malaysia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) in July 2008 was up 1.8%
compared with the corresponding month last year, based on the latest
preliminary release by the Department of Statistics (DOS).
The increase was attributed to expansion in all the sectors-
manufacturing added 1.5%; electricity increased 1.3% and mining by
3.1%.
For the first seven months of the year, the IPI grew 4.2% compared
with the same period in 2007. Month-on-month, the July IPI rose 1.6%,
after registering a negative growth of 1.1% the previous month.
The higher Manufacturing index in July, year-on-year, was mainly
attributed to increases in the production of television, radio, sound
or video recording or reproducing apparatus by 44.7%; other
fabricated metal products by 25.9% and processing of food, oils and
fats by 10.8%.Month-on-month, the index increased by a marginal 0.2%.
For the first seven months of 2008, the Manufacturing output was up
4.9% compared to the same period last year.
The Electricity index added 1.3% in July 2008 as compared with the
corresponding month a year earlier. Compared to the previous month,
the Electricity index rose 2.9% while for the first seven months of
the year, the index grew 3.5% as against the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the mining sector recovered from the previous month's
negative growth, to register an increase of 3.1% in July, year-on-
year. The expansion was mainly supported by the growth in the crude
oil index of 7.6%.The cumulative growth in the mining sector for the
first seven months of 2008 was 1.9% as compared with the same period
last year.
