Greetings everyone,
We appreciate the great support from our many substantive executive
members and thousands of daily readers.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at 106th position, remains one of the lowest
cost cities in the world, according to the latest 2008 Cost of Living
(COL) survey by Mercer, a consulting, outsourcing and investment
services company.
Kuala Lumpur's Cost of Living Index score as at March 2008 was 75
against 72.8 a year earlier per NST
Moscow topped the list of 143 cities surveyed with a COL of 142.4,
followed by Tokyo, London, Oslo and Seoul among the top five most
expensive cities in the world.
Among Asian cities, Tokyo emerged as the costliest, followed by
Seoul, Hong Kong and Singapore. Singapore rose one position to become
the fifth most expensive city in Asia.
Yvonne Traber, a Mercer Principal and Research Manager said the
current market conditions which resulted in a further weakening of
the US dollar coupled with the strengthening of the euro and many
other currencies, have led to significant changes on this year's
rankings. She cited cities in Eastern Europe, Brazil and India are
moving up the list while cities which are traditionally deemed
expensive such as Stockholm and New York now appear less costly by
comparison.
The survey also confirmed the global trend on the increases in prices
for specific food products and petrol. However, this was partly
offset by the lower prices for certain products such as electronic
and electrical goods due to cheaper imports from developing
countries, in particular China, as well as to advancement in
technology.
Mercer's survey measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in
each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing,
household goods and entertainment. The survey is normally used by
multinational companies and governments as a guide to determine
compensation allowances for their expatriate employees.
