Foreign direct investments (FDIs) in Malaysia's manufacturing sector
for the first eight months of the year have reached a record RM36.8
billion. This exceeding the RM33.4 billion for the whole of 2007, per
statements from the Minister of International Trade and Industry, Tan
Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The total investments approved for the eight-month period amounted to
RM49.8 billion, of which RM13 billion were domestic investments.
Speaking at the closing of the Sabah International Expo (SIE) 2008 in
Kota Kinabalu, the Minister said the sustained inflows reflected
Malaysia's continued competitiveness as an investment destination,
amidst strong competition for FDIs from developing and developed
economies in the region and worldwide.
Malaysia needs to continue to promote FDIs into the country and at
the same time spur the growth of Malaysian small and medium
enterprises (SMEs), the Minister added per Bernama.
Malaysian companies are also encourage to undertake cross border
investments to grow their overseas markets, seize new investment
opportunities, acquire new technology and expand the sources of raw
material supplies, according to the Minister.
Meanwhile, Sabah attracted investments of RM825.6 million in 27
projects for the first eight months of the year.
Malaysia recorded some RM805.2 billion in total trade for the first
eight months of the year, up 12.7% from the RM714.5 billion in the
corresponding period last year. Exports added 16.1% to RM449.9
billion while imports increased 8.7 % to RM355.3 billion, Tan Sri
Muhyiddin Yassin added.
