Malaysia recorded a strong 53.4% growth in Foreign Direct Investment
(FDI) in 2008, the highest increase in the Asian region and one of
the few developing countries in West, East and Southeast Asia to
achieve positive growth in FDI last year, according to the United
Nations Conference on Trade and Development recent preliminary report.

Based on UNTACD's record, total FDI inflows into Malaysia increased
from USS8.4 billion in 2007 to US$12.9 billion in 2008, ahead of
other countries like Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, which all
recorded negative FDI growths while China had a growth of 10.6%.

The bulk of the FDIs in Malaysia last year were in the Basic Metal
products, Electrical and Electronic products, Chemical and Chemical
products, and Food Manufacturing industries.

Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Mamat, the Secretary General of the Ministry of
International Trade and Industry (MITI), said the growth in FDI was
remarkable as FDI flows had dipped by 21% on average globally. The
growth was a further indication of foreign investors' confidence in
Malaysia's investment environment.

The MITI Secretary General attributed the higher FDIs last year to
several factors including the stable public policies, favourable
investment environment, structural reform, prompt and effective
economic stimulus initiatives by the Federal Government, and liberal
policies towards FDIs per the Star.

Acknowledging the impact of the global financial turmoil on FDI flows
this year, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman said MITI Has taken appropriate
measures to ensure the sustained inflows of FDIs. In the services
sector, investors could look forward to further liberalisation of the
related policies, further improvement in the government delivery
system, and a review of policies that could impede trade, the
Secretary General added.
