In primates and birds, the larger the group, the better the chance that non-dominant individuals have of being chosen as a mate, reports New Scientist.

Alison Lenton at the University of Edinburgh, and her team looked at whether this is true for people too.

Speed-daters race through a series of "mini dates" of about 5 minutes then invite whoever catches their fancy to get in touch again later.

To reach the conclusion, Lenton and her team studied 118 sessions with groups of between seven and 36 people, and found to their surprise that as the size of the group grew, the offers became skewed towards just a few individuals, while the least popular ended up with fewer or no offers.

The study has been published in the journal Animal Behaviour.

So why do humans seem to differ from other animals? In smaller groups, says Lenton, people trade off different qualities in prospective mates - physical attractiveness for intelligence, for example. Faced with too much choice, however, people resort to crude approaches such as choosing solely on looks. (ANI)

Orkut profile lands youth in jail

A 20-year-old man, the son of a technocraft company owner at Goregaon (East), was arrested by the Cyber Crime Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch on Tuesday, for allegedly posting an obscene profile of a woman excise officer on social networking portal Orkut. Covit Patil, who works for his father's company that manufactures agricultural tools, was remanded to police custody till November 10 on Tuesday.

He has been charged for outraging the modesty of a woman and under relevant section of the Information Technology (IT) Act. Inspector Mukund Pawar of the Cyber Crime Cell said on Monday the excise officer had approached the Dindoshi police station and lodged a complaint that she had been getting crank calls after her mobile number and her obscene profile was posted on Orkut.

The police referred her to the Cyber Crime Cell. On Monday, a complaint was registered.

"After tracing the IP address of the officer, they tracked down Covit. During interrogation Covit confessed that he had posted the profile," said Pawar.

you can try pci=off option to the kernel also mostly smp kernels have this kind of prob too u might try to boot the normal ups kernel image i mean the normal without the smp one.

As suggested by nirmal also should work.

Adding edd=off to the boot options in grub.conf on Fedora 9 or menu.lst in OpenSuSE 11 might help.

e.g.,

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6. 25-14.fc9. i686 ro root=UUID=b844ee83- 8587-409a- 9b52-8f37ab46866 2 rhgb quiet edd=off

hi dude,

You are absolutely right about OPENNMS and NAGIOS.

However, main problem with place OPENNMS is that it is very resource heavy. We are already running it on windows to monitor our wifi network and it works nicely - shooting lot of mails about path blockages and other problems it identifies.

Main reason we turned our eyes to NAGIOS is that we think it's less heavy on resource since we need to install it to monitor small network of around 35 pcs ( all running windows ). However - company is not ready to spare nice server ( unfortunately we have very old P2 - computer with 256 mb RAM and very old 4 GB harddrive - yep still using that old hdd ).

 And yea - we are running FEDORA.

Hi Chinmay,

               See monit is basically designed for linux ,well OpenNMS is a great tool but it lacks the features of taking actions like if your apache or url is down monit can let u know and restart the apache by itself and even send alerts via emails to the admin or to your mail id.

 Nagiios is not so handy tool it also checks and you need to have nagios client to be installed on every windows machine so that nagios server can fetch information from the nodes on which you have installed nagios clients. OPENNMS doesn't require clients it tries to gather information by itself .Well you can try out Linux for your network. It is a fantastic OS.

Hi,

Hi Techies,

                I configured monit and it is a very excellent tool for
monitoring the services,files,timestamps. Even it can take actions
when you are not there. It can send u mail alerts when  the service
gets down and you can ask monit to take actions when the service gets
down.

4.2.2.RC8.2 has been released.

Highlights:
A memory leak in request forwarding has been fixed. The disk cleaning
mechanism has been rolled back. Logs have been fixed to report
"username@IP_ADDRESS". Crashing due to incompatible values set in the
global sub-section has been fixed. Repeated authentication challenges
have been fixed. cProfiles (a Web site profiler) has been added. The
SafeSquid init script has been enhanced. Automatic log rotation has
been improved. There are major optimizations to allow handling of more
than 1024 concurrent sockets. There are optimizations in the automatic
creation of directives for Monit.

             Well prakash I am just a simple human being on the planet
earth. I am always there for u all linuxites not only for linux but
for any other help too. Even i helped nimit yestday on wi-fi I feel
happy and content.Wld try to be for consultancy to ur firm on weekends
and guide your IT dept for SMS Gateway kannel on linux too.

Especially I am heartly obliged.Now Sir I want to configure sendmail or qmail or postfix mail server within the LAN. Can you help me in that ?.If possible can you be a consultant to our firm.Please do give me the valuable feedback and your article of SSL with apache 2 is great.

Hi Techies,

         It has been long query for lot of people that how can you use
ssl with apache and that too with authentication to provide more
security to your website.

I did this for my site running on opensuse 10.3 at my home desk.It was
quite fine making it running.So sharing with you all I would be
hosting my site on home desk.The only snag is to keep it running 24x7
but wld do it and loads of contents need to be updated for my site so
would be doing that in my free time. It would have loads of documents
and tutorials related to networks,UTM,embedded linux,kernel internals..
